GK,

Thanks for stopping by and leaving the comment. To be honest, while I respect your decision—I have even more respect for your honesty in this quote from your e-mail to Bruce.

"I don’t agree/share your views and ways, so honestly I have no interest in continuing Beautiful Diversion on your “blog”. We are quite happy with its present distribution. Thousands have already been downloaded from the NextD site."

At least you said what you meant. The comment you've left both here and BusinessWeek sounds like a PR announcement. It doesn't come across as completely genuine. The bit from your e-mail did.

Leslie, Thomas, Bruce

Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedules to share your thoughts. Leslie, to your point about Bruce being a bit over-zealous in his response—I believe that he addressed it and as his "ire" was drawn. But I question what's productive and what's not. I think this topic is worth the discussion.

Thomas, while I respect your views—I definitely disagree with much of it especially the attitude of describing these shifts as "a current craze".

Do yourself a favor—since ethnography is so hot these days. Observe people in their 20's and even younger. Watch them carefully. How they communicate, share and digest information. Do you really think they will change these habits the moment they enter the corporate world?

I'm not sure this is so much about "scientific debates" as much as it is a desire to spread opinions and "cross pollinate". That was the missed opportunity here. Two other values that the design community likes bussing about are "curiosity" and "empathy". I didn't see either in GK's motives. If he were curious—his attitude would have been more like "interesting—I didn't expect this, but let's see where it goes".

No, it was the opposite. GK drew a firm line in the sand and kept control of the format and his original intent. Ironically, the curiosity comes from a "non-designer". And chew on this. I read through the majority of the opininions. Some of them were more passionate than the kind of stuff you see on blogs. One contributer even calls Bruce "Brucie". Others like Tim Brown challenge the entire field of design journalism.

Bruce shows empathy and curiosity by re-publishing both the good and bad about him. He's willng to take other viewpoints—some critical and share with his audience.

Lastly on ethics—I've experessed that if I were a contributor in the PDF, that I would have no problem having my portion of it distributed on BusinessWeek or any other blog as long as it was related to the subject matter. Nussbaum on design is. I don't see what is unethical in this.

Simply put—our contet will be distributed in ways we did not originally intend. It's now up to us to decide how, why and where we want to draw our lines in the sand. And I don't think it's a "current craze". It's more of a "current reality". Pragmatically speaking of course.

Thank you for taking the time to comment. I agree that a broad audience would benefit. And certainly we all need to keep our brains from "rotting". :)

Kristian,

Thanks for the comment. So far you have been the only one from the report to weigh in.

Bruce. You bring up some very important points and I can't pretend I have the answers. To boil it down—it's becoming clear that all of this "stuff" has real power. And with power comes abuse. There is an ugly side to all of this. Kathy Sierra's recent fiasco tells us that bad things happen when we put ourselves out there.

When we participate—whether in Facebook, Myspace, Blogs, Comments, Message boards... whatever, there is a real risk of the potential for something bad to happen.

But it's kind of like life right? There are lots of ways the world can get you. People lie, cheat, steal and do bad things in life and the same can happen on there emerging places of connectivity.

Again, I don't have an answer—but think of it this way. In many crime-ridden areas you'll see "community watch neighborhood" signs in plain view. It tells the "bad guys" that there are members of the community watching this neighborhood. Policing it. People who care. The same thing need to exist in these spaces. We need to be "vigilant"—always on the lookout. At the same time, we can't become mobs.

Oy. It's complicated.

PS, Experience Curve has been a HUGE inspiration to me. You basically turned me on the the intricacies of Social Media.

LOL!

Paul, careful what you say in comments. True story: I left a comment over at the Social Customer Manifesto a while back and joked about how I have the strange habit of singing along to "Don't Stop Believing" by Journey (on the rare occasion that it comes on the radio)

Anyway, guess what I got in the mail recently from a total stranger? You guessed it. The Journey CD with that song on it. There was no note, but methinks he read that comment!

Cue Twighlight Song music... :)

BTW, I included two exclamation marks in this comment just for you! Better make that three.

A while back I wrote about Wii and was asked if I would buy it to which I replied:

"GREAT question. I want one. Problem is that I have a 5-year-old that I want to buy a system for as well and I'm afraid he would launch that thing out the window."

I guess we have to fear for our fancy flat screens even more so than the window. I wonder if some of younger users will be launching this thing at high velocity by not fastening it correctly.

Gives the product name a whole new meaning...
