Hi there,

I worked "customer service" for a very long time. It got me through college and through a post grad degree. But I sure don't miss people who think us measley workers owe them something.

My husband and I LOVE going to kosher markets. We do keep kosher afterall, but there are some we just can't and won't go to. I hate to say this, but the worst one for us is more Ashkenazi than Sephardi and it's quite black hat, not modern Yeshivish black hat, but Chabad and whichever Hassidic group that wears the knickers and white socks, and the dudes with the long curly peyos.

We find this market to be the most pushy and rude. The men expect the women to move out of THEIR way even if it truly is the other way around, the Israeli cashiers are never happy, the best people there are the Latino workers! Go figure. :) Oh, and one more thing, this store has no fracking prices on a thing! There's ONE scanner that you can bring all your items to if you want to know the price. Needless to say, there's always restockables there waiting for the poor guys who work there.

You said: "BTW, berry picking may lead to mixed dancing. "

That cracked me up because it reminded me of something that happened to me. First, I am an OBSERVANT conservative Jew. We keep kosher, don't cook on Shabbat, etc. etc. We are not cholov Yisroel.

So, one day I realized my milk wasn't hekshered. I went to the Chabad's "Ask the rabbi" site. I was told by a Chabad rabbi that technically the milk is fine; however, drinking non hekshered milk can lead to agnosticism.

OY, here we go....

Without me looking it up as I am not a Torah scholar nor am I super learned on the topic. But...it seems to me that it is written in the Torah that we are to respect all life and animals are listed there. If someone knows the source for such a thing, please do share.

Hi Hesh,

I am definitely an oddball compared to most of your readers. First, I and my husband, and MANY of our Conservative friends keep kosher in AND out of the home. It's true, we aren't as specific at the type of Heksher, nor are we chalav Israel. But...we only eat hekshered food. We don't take it for granted. We bring food when going places that we know aren't kosher. Heck! We even rented a cabin in the mountains with a kitchen so that we could kasher the stovetop and microwave. We than bought all our own food and REAL plates and dinnerware of our own so that we didn't use the cabin's non kosher dishes nor did we waste tons of plasticware. I believe that you and many readers should get to know more serious conservative Jews before assuming that we don't "really" care about it.

I don't think I'm prepared to go into super halachik depth of why HT is a good move because I am far from an halachik scholar. However, it seems so simple to me. As Jews we are to spread light amongst the nations. I think treating our fellow man humanely and respectfully is a basic tennet of Judaism. Someone mentioned how the Torah allowed chattle and such. Sure, but workers are NOT our slaves. Nor are workers less than us as Jews. If we are going to hire people to work for us it should be done honestly and fairly. I also believe that HT has something to do with the way animals are treated. We ALL know how messed up the kosher meat industry has gotten. I for one believe that in order for an animal to be considered kosher it needs to be respected; not JUST in the way it's slaughtered and drained of blood.

What about kissing the prayer book every time you close it? If you do that. I know I do. Or, the Torah being kissed and touched every time it comes around. I do think about kissing the prayer book and it's kinda icky.

However...perhaps germs don't count in Shul just like calories don't count on Shabbat :)

Hi babe,

It was a great little video and oddly enough, I was reviewing some previous emails we exchanged and we shared an email about this very thing quite recently. I had totally forgotten about a wonderful article in the August/September issue of Moment magazine about these Jews entitled "Lost in India". Unfortunately, I can't seem to find an online link right now.

Anyway, thanks for sharing.
