FYI - Dataquick is not Zillow's only (commercial) data-source. Also, not to speak for DQ, but from my understanding, their offering is not well described as an intermediary of First American's.

When discussing real estate data sources, it's important to remember that almost a million homeowners have claimed their homes on Zillow and updated the facts about their homes. This is an extremely rich data source, unique to Zillow.

Cheap-skate here. Thanks for this objective review, Kris.

It's good to hear that the San Diego Zindex jives with your personal experience. Using the median Zestimate to report trends allows us to exclude the impact of individual Zestimates which may be inaccurate. The simple reason this works so well is that inaccurate Zestimates have an equal chance of being high as they do of being low - so by using the one "in the middle" we can effectively ignore the inaccurate estimates that fall evenly on either side of that median.

FYI - we publish these reports quarterly but you can also access the historical Zindex "live" for any Zip, County, City and State in the "Charts and Data" section of any homes details on Zillow.

Sramana,

Thanks for making the corrections.

As you know, Zillow is a private company and a very early stage startup -- I can't share financial details. The site is 17months old. Ad revenues to date are impressive and our audience is extremely attractive to advertisers. But our primary focus right now is not revenue - it's our product and its audience. As it should be.

Hi Sramana, it's David from Zillow.

Some corrections:

1) 50K RE agents and over 1MM users are are registered on Zillow.
2) ULocate is one of many users of Zillow'sopen API - they don't provide our API and aren't otherwise partnered with Zillow.
3) Zillow does not sell leads -- our revenue model is strictly advertising based.

So, I'm going to have to give this post a C+ but you could improve your grade by publishing an update. ;-)

I'm also very pleased to announce that we just released a major extension to the community features on Zillow. Please see this blog post (and the website) for more details ...
