I once got a virus on my Linux box. But that's because I was stupid.

I had an extremely limited account called "guest" (with password "guest") so that my college roommate could cleanly shut down the computer during a thunderstorm. Since there was no way to log in remotely, it wasn't a security issue.

Some months later, I installed the OpenSSH package. It was configured to allow anyone but root to log in remotely, and sooner or later a worm found its way in and tried to crack root. I noticed the excess network traffic, found a suspicious file in /tmp, destroyed it (and a couple of processes), then added the AllowUsers directive to /etc/ssh/sshd_config.

It didn't cause any damage, and I haven't had any trouble since then. Yay for privilege separation, boo for bad default configuration!

#7's code doesn't give you the precise URL, just lets you know that certain domains have been visited.

It is a partial solution.

Also, I'd like to note that the Firefox extension SafeHistory is specifically designed to prevent this exploit, by subjecting "visited"-marking to the browser's cookie policy. :-)

Wow, that seems sketchy for so many reasons. (And, like you, I understand that people go to jail under many, diverse circumstances -- a number are even innocent!)

1) There's kind of a mismatch between the phrases "attractive" and "penpal" -- I can't quite tell if they're looking for conversational partners or something more along the lines of life partners.

2) I seem to recall hearing many stories about gullible women devoted to scary male felons (why is does it never seem to be the other way around?), claiming "He's really kind and loving!" after the guy went to jail for mass murder or something. (Okay, this is a bit exaggerated, but you get my point.)

3) I didn't catch onto the inmate-exploitation angle you brought up, but that's an important one. The folks in prison are already exploited in so many ways, mostly by the state or corporation running the facility.

Then I visited the site. It seems to be your run-of-the-mill e-cottage industry site, complete with a couple of animated GIFs. (Site was made in FrontPage, to no one's surprise.) Down at the bottom I see "Meet-An-Inmate.Com is Ranked Number One", according prisonpenpaldirectory.com. Is this alittle-known subculture, people who seek out inmates to become penpals? That's one thing, but the dating twist kind of throws me off.

I dunno.
