Hey Cathy! I looked for you at UTC, but I never did get to meet up with you. I did want to let you know that our group from North Carolina thought it was fabulous! I presented 4 times and each time we were full (one was even at 8:00!!). We are talking about coming again next year instead of going to our State conference. You guys in SC sure know how to put on a conference!Talk (see) to ya soon,

I believe that filters are a necessary evil in schools. And while I will also agree that understanding how filters work and why they block what they do is something educators should know, it doesn’t address the issue of who CONTROLS the filter. As you pointed out, many IT folks haven’t taught in a classroom, yet they are the ones deciding if the tools we need to do our jobs can be accessed or not. I’m all for going through channels to obtain what I need to do my job, but from experience, going through those channels just isn’t always practical due to time constraints. I know educators are supposed to plan ahead and should be checking resources they want to use ahead of time, but come on, they’re too busy teaching to have to time to check every website they want to use to ensure it works at school. Most teachers at my high school do their lesson planning at home, since their “planning” period is usually taken up with make-up testing, subing for other teachers, or running off copies and any other errands they need to perform. If a website they want to use is blocked, they just better pray there is another site or other alternative available. Going through channels could mean the site gets unblocked days, weeks, or even months after the unit is already finished, if it gets unblocked at all! If asking for sites to be unblocked needs to be planned in advanced, how far in advance? Most of the web resources listed in the TEXTBOOKS are blocked. Does a teacher have to go through them ALL prior to school starting just to make sure they aren’t blocked? And even then, the sties could be working today but be blocked tomorrow! I’m not saying that our IT department is bad or doesn’t make every effort to assist teachers. And I certainly wouldn’t want their job – worrying about the security of our district’s network – what a headache! All I’m saying is that teachers, or at least an administrator or media specialist, should have the ability to override the filter in order to facilitate learning, while still going though proper channels to have the sites permanently unblocked….something your district understands and that I wish ours would understand, too.

I think I’m more interested in following people than worrying about who follows me because I feel I have so much to learn from others. I tend to follow people who mention education in their profile or I see them in a conversation about education. If someone follows me and they are not in education, I don’t usually follow them. Just recently I found out from my twitter friends that it is okay to block people, I have started to block people who just want to sell me something.

@Ewan - I still am reeling from your announcement about leaving education to be in in a television industry. I have to give it up to you though, as you are a lot of the reason i was able to enjoy BLC last year, and desired to be there this year, even if only virtually.
It’ll be a shame not to see you again this summer, for some more time maybe, but I understand your thoughts. Conferences like this one, in particular, depend on teachers going back home afterwards and running mini-BLCs or mini-NECCs in their districts. Hopefully those coming will do so; I’ve already seen Jeff, so will hope that he does something along those lines. Already, with UTC, they’ve shown great willing on Continuing Professional Development. I’d say things are looking up in your part of the world.

@Elaine Thank your that thorough description of the filter you use and how it works. I see teachers as being less frustrated when these things are explained and shared, and they have the opportunity to buy in to the philosophy behind it. It sounds like you have a lot of educational background too, so the decisions are being "processed" through one who has been in the trenches of teaching, so to speak. Based on responses in the survey and conversations at NECC, many IT have no educational background, and that is not only frightening, it is sad. Welcome to my network btw. I noticed you are now following me in Twitter.

Hi there,
Your post came to me via a google alert search with the term
website filtering.
I work in this area and know that teachers find much of the process frustrating. I like the section where the issue of categories was explained and also the fact that different levels of access to categories and individual sites can be applied. We have a web filter check all teachers can use and an explanation about categories. Still not enough understanding exists around why some categories are blocked. Also enterprise filter products vary quite a lot I understand. Older versions may have category names that continue to block social networking sites. The awesome highlighter is categorised internet services. We would have it available to all here. Maybe it is blocked for copyright issues? All teachers understand the blocks for several categories eg. p***, drugs, alcohol etc. Blocks applied for bandwidth, security etc are harder fro some to understand. With web 2.0 tools it is a movable feast. The blog rejected the post the first time, sine I had used the category name p***.BTW, we have penalties for anyone who tries to avoid the webfilter, by using a proxy. It is easy to access a free URL checker on the web.

I enjoyed reading the results of your survey. It really does show the wide range of policies, policy makers, and applications used by IT, LMS and teachers. I think that we do have it pretty good in HCS. I wonder how I will find things in Gtown Cty?

@Diane - Being new in my school, I didnt't feel I had the "pull" to get another to go. Guess that means I still have my work cut out for me. The one (I wanted to go (Mr Granito) couldnt b/c princ said I needed a female roommate--imagine that. He would have been fab. He has recently moved to northern NJ darn it!) The library coord. expressed concern to me about my decision to stay home, so i suppose that is affirmation that I am the reason they decided to go. Doesn't that sound a little egotistical and self centered. I guess this post is also my little pity party. But I a living with my decision, and I am hoping the Ustreams I think are going to come out will be solid and wonderful!! The EdubloggerCon East material so far has been great. Your friend, Bud the Teacher, and Stefanie Sandifer have been leading the backchannel to me.

@Charlene How wonderful for you to encourage me in the middle of my pity-party! Let's hope I have great things to share about this year. BTW--I can't seem to get your blog to load...

Cathy,I hope your belief that less committed educators should be exposed to the riches and benefits of such a conference results in a core group of inspired and connected people.Have your administrators indicated that the money they “save” by your withdrawal will, indeed, be used for PD? The fact that the district is willing to fund such travel & learn opportunities would lead me to believe that they do more than pay lip service to 21st century learning. That bodes well for staff and students!

Cathy,
Sounds like your NECC presentation went above and beyond your expectations! I will probably curse myself later for this, but I would love to be in on a session like you suggested for SCASL. We need to show (and I need to learn!) the power of combined forces for encouraging others to use the tools that will engage our SC learners. The reason I say I will probably curse myself for this – I will be taking the two capstone courses of my MLIS and doing my student internship in the spring. But you can count on me to help.

WOw what a great idea! Thanks Kevin Honeycutt AND Julianne (jvkaye). This is a fabulous idea not only for quickie style staff developments, but also sessions at conferences--a keyring tag. Wonder how much a really hard plastic one would run me? I may have to look onto this seriously1

@Leslie - I was told they would put signs on the door. I didn't decide to
cancel right way, else Jeff would have announced at the beginning of
Ewan's keynote. I even gave thought to coming and doing the 8:00
session and then driving on to Columbia for the standards work, but
the more I thought about the gas from Rock Hill to Greenville, and
then from Greenville to Columbia, and then Columbia back to Rock Hill, well...it just sounded very wasteful. The curriculum project I'm involved with at the sde will help change the view of teacher librarians to more of a collaborative team player, so I thought I should keep that
commitment. Also, when I read that Don Cantrell had a similar topic,I didn't feel as guilty. I am now feeling huge EMBARRASSMENT at the thought of people waiting on me. Bummer. Again, I am so sorry.

Great post, thank you. I agree, grant writing is a tricky process and there's remarkably little word of mouth feedback and support for it, especially given the vital importance it has to most of the work we do... How many of us fund our innovation in a 'project' by 'project' fashion....

I'm going to share this with the staff here... thanks.

Your photos (which have already begun rolling out) and blog posts about the conference last year really gave me a feeling of being present and accounted for. Say hi to jeff M for me!

Thanks for sharing the link so I can go back and see/listen/read what others said. Steve was AWESOME at the conference. Such a labor of love he puts into it, and it showed.

I am just getting into twitter now and get very excited when someone asks to follow me. But I have realised that there is a lot of spam and also competitions for people to see how many people they can follow - mad or what?

I follow educators but would love to have a network made up of my own profession (midwives) but cannot see that happening for a while. cheers Sarah

@Cathy sorry but I think there lies your problem. Google Reader isn't busy there are some strategies for using it effective. Perhaps I should do a live online session using it?

@Kate shame on you! LOL My Google Reader is part of my routine. iGoogle is my homepage. All my feeds from Twitter come into it -- including the link monitor that captures the links from twitter. It can save you time if you use it wisely.

Sue – I’m using Google Reader and I know what my main problem is It’s that I often go for a few days without even opening it! I email subscribe to my favorite blogs and read so many from twitter that often I’ve already read some of the feeds before I even get to Google Reader! I like to subscribe to a lot of feeds because I use it as a blog search engine for when I’m looking for posts on particular topics.
