There's some of that going on on the right as well. Speculation over who McCain is going to pick for VP is great, but it's not hard to find people who are foaming at the mouth furious about a VP pick that hasn't happened yet, based on nothing more than speculation. That's not rational. That's insane. I've taken a break from reading the Corner until after next Friday, just because every other day, KLo is having another conniption fit over a pick that hasn't happened yet.

Is he? I haven't seen any recent polls. But the surprising thing about the primaries was that Obama won only two of the four bedroom counties surrounding Philly. If McCain spends a good deal of time courting the voters in those four counties, he may swing PA red. As for Bayh, since I lived in Indiana for most of my life and had Hostettler, Sodrel, and Hill as my reps, I doubt very much that putting Bayh on the ticket would significantly affect Indiana's vote. The only way Obama can win Indiana is with magically appearing "votes" from Lake County (not unlike the primaries). As the man said, Bayh swung far to the left as soon as he got to DC.

Didn't we hear all of the praises of so-called preventative care when Clinton gave us HMOs and "managed care"? And it seems that about a month after we got all these glorious HMOs and managed care plans, the horror stories started rolling in. We'd save a great deal of money if we went back to health insurance, instead of this supermarket discount card plan we have now -- and if people didn't run to the doctor everytime they scraped a knee, instead of spraying bactine on it and getting on with their lives. Insurance is for emergencies, not regular visits. Somebody has to pay the difference every time you plop down that card with your $15 co-pay. Go back to blue cross wit $1000 or $1500 deductible, and go to the doctor only when you need to go to the doctor.

I'm late to this, but I might point out that it hasn't been that long ago that "critical thinking" meant teaching logical fallacies, syllogisms, and rhetoric. It changed, only over the last couple of decades, starting when the idea that teaching logic was (I kid you not) cultural imperialism, and the relativization of reality came soon after. The university writing program provides tutors to departments, for students who need help. Over the last few years I taught, we had more and more trouble with the tutors, who would argue with us that there is no "correct" answer, and we should rather place emphasis on the student's creativity. It drove us to distraction.
