My church also has weekly communion--and I share your sentiment that my ability to dumb it down is nearly infinite. Thinking about God's awful transcendence as well as his merciful proximity may help to appreciate more fully just what we're doing.

Now that I think about it, God's power can be seen as immanent as well as transcendent--as can his mercy. So maybe my thinking needs revision at more than one place (imagine that). Thanks for the post...and the good use of Lewis.

@ freedom seeker: I appreciate your enthusiasm. However, my impression is that you're throwing the baby out with the bath water--or, as I like to say, tossing the coffee out with the grinds.

The church has always been a composite of authentic faith and self-serving "religion." Therefore, to scrap everything and start over is kind of redundant, to say the least...we may as well make it a daily ritual (which the Reformers, in fact, suggested, in a spiritual sense: "semper reformanda").

You suggest Viola says scrapping it, and starting over with a tone of incredible unbelief. Are you suggesting we keep it like it is?

I don't think anyone who actually cares about the church wants to keep it like it is. My problem with Viola is that I don't think the changes he subscribes are necessarily the ones the church most needs.

A&A, thanks for the coffee link. I'm a huge fan of fresh roasted beans, so the site looks promising. I gave it a once-over and I'll have to go back and explore.

Will, all you need to do to market your next book is convince Starbucks to push it for you. Anything that appears in Starbucks is going to sell, whether it's coffee, music, or lit.

It would be cool to see this trend proliferate in more unique, privately-owned roasteries as well...coffee seems conducive to the arts. In a perfect world, some previously-unknown artists could get face time that way.

Dr. James Naismith inventing the game of basketball with a peach basket.

The Jayhawks winning the NCAA tourney against all odds in 1988...

The French Revolution is always good for a gory scene or two.

Likewise, the Salem Witch Trials.

Of course, they've been done before.
