Jo - I have to say I'm torn on the whole copy-protection issue. On one hand, the speed and methods by which pirated games are spreading really leaves publishers with no option but to try and stem the tide somehow. And, of all the copy protection schemes, SecurROM is probably one of the less egregious options.. think StarForce and you know how bad it can really get.

On the other hand, the sort of annoyance that early BioShock users faced, or even the pain of constantly having to keep the game disc in the tray sort of wipes out any compassion one has for the publishers.

Overall I think the approach CoH took is a promising direction - no copy protection, but build such a compelling multi-player experience that people don't have the complusion to pirate. Obviously this won't work for Single-Player games like BioShock, but it's a start.

Re: Bioshock itself - do listen to this episode of the PC Gamer podcast. In this, the designer of BioShock talks about what they have done to resolve the authentication issues, and also what is the future plan for such mechanisms.

Hey Scott!

Thanks for stopping by. I had discussed the issues I had with Altiris SVS in an earlier post (linked in the article, but here it is). Broadly the issues are:

1. Inability to create different layers for different applications - My initial assumption was I could create one layer for every application I installed and then activate/deactivate all of them at one go. However, it turned out that only one layer could be active at a time and that defeated the purpose of virtualization as I saw it - being able to rollback one change/changes to a base install.

2. Startup - The version of Altiris I used would only run as part of my startup group. That meant that programs that added services (such as iTunes) or other programs in the startup group would fail till Altiris was running. I would have much rather seen preferred that Altiris run as a service, preferably one that launched very early in the boot to avoid any dependency issues.

The version I tried out also significantly slowed some apps (typically apps that opened ports) but that issue is probably not a stand-alone Altriris issue.

@jun - Also what program are using to create your PDFs - Adobe Acrobat tends to create huge bloated PDFs (why is that not surprising) whereas Ghostscript generates smaller PDF files. Obviously downscaling picture resolutions, resizing rather than just copy-pasting (like vicki has mentioned above) would help as well.

@vicki - I think the answer is that there are different buckets at different points of times in the relationship. At first, there's the whole fizz of being together phyiscally and discovering each other. As time goes by, it becomes more like a pair of old jeans - not glamorous, but comfortable and reassuring. The trick is knowing when to dip into which bucket.

vicki - The k810 was the phone that I lost =(.. the camera on that phone is surprisingly good and can easily become an 'go-everywhere' camera; here's an example. I won't recommend it for night shots; but it's can double as an PnS in all other circumstances.

Anyhoo, good luck with the move and all that :)

Came here from dubdew's blog - hope you don't mind me over in that corner :)

Anyway since I'm a geek I had to comment on this one - detailed readme's of instructions aren't that surprising.

The warez groups that make these "releases" pride themselves on making complete releases, as better working "releases" fetch more points on the topsites ( See this wonderful article on wired for more info - http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/13.01/topsite.html).

I have seen readmes for warez-d games that comes with instructions on how to get around copy-protection for games - some of which can involve having to unplug your CD-drive :O
