        <content>Hey Lorelle,

Most blog systems today really have sufficient functionality for people to identify themselves through the name and website fields, and it is unnecessary for people to sign off their comments.

I guess everyone has their own preferences, I don't mind people signing off their comments on my blog, so long as they don't sign off with those forum-type signatures where they blast off with marketing talk.

The word '&lt;a href="http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/dork"&gt;dork&lt;/a&gt;' can be interpreted as something pretty vulgar, so I guess the what you meant and what was read my many reader could have been different. Well... that's English hur. :)</content>

But then again, if a person is focused only on blogging - the message might turn out to be not as attractive, because what people want to hear are experiences and thoughts of the employees, or the executives handing the everyday tasks, not someone dedicated to blog about company stuff (not another PR/marketing person!)</content>

        <content>Marc,

Thanks for the long comment! Yes, you are right - blogs are really nothing but another breed of websites.

They are just content management systems put in a more friendly word and more "publishing" focus rather than "content management" focus.

In a blog, you log in, go to the write post page, type and hit publish, as opposed to creating content, then linking it up to a certain menu (in Joomla) etc.

What matters more is really the blogger (or the organisation) behind that blog, and the efforts to market the blog. A corporate blog that nobody reads does nothing essentially. Great point!

Your questions in the last para really deserves some thought! I think the process has to go something like this:

Phase 1 - COMPANY has to open up to blogging, adopt a more open culture

Phase 2 - They set up a blog and they MARKET THE BLOG (i.e. build links, participate in the blogosphere)

Phase 3 - Only after they get readers, can the BLOG MARKET THEIR SERVICES.

I think this deserves more than a comment. Let me put more thought into this and get back in a full post! :P</content>

        <content>Hey Walter,

Great point about that it doesn't really flow naturally for corporate chieftains to blogs!

I think a lot of people get stumped at "What and how to I write?" and never get down to starting a blog.

We have be taught from young to watch our spelling, grammar, and all the nuances of proper writing, and its hard to switch to conversational style writing, in my opinion. I guess one of the reasons why most blogs belong to the younger generation is not because they can write better - but because they are more used to writing in the manner they speak... thanks to IRC, ICQ and MSN :)

... also I think corporations that embrace blogging should leave some "blogging time" at work :P</content>

        <content>Hey Char,

Good point. Haha... Even though its been at least two years since the idea of corporate blogging was born, it seems that not many companies are taking up the idea.

I think it takes time, and a community! Its been years since the start of online marketing, and in my area, the bigger companies are just starting to embrace it.

I believe corporate blogging will come. Meanwhile, we all have to start reaching out and letting the world know!</content>

<content>Wonderful list you have here Mark, the use of some plugins certainly do help mould a better surfing experience for your readers, and it is especially helpful when you are doing a corporate blog.

However, one also has to respect the fundamentals of usability, like reducing the strain on memory by not having &amp;gt; 7 times in a list, appropriate colors, proper use of font sizes, etc.</content>

Now actually both Blogger and WordPress allow you to map a domain over to a blog hosted on their servers. I haven't explored the Blogger one, but WordPress charges just $10 a year for that mapping.

So, if you are confident with your CSS tweaking skills, you can get a website up with $8.95 (domain) + $10 (mapping) a year, and nobody will know its hosted on WordPress.com!</content>

<content>Thanks James, it would be great if you could help Sawhney89... however, I think he already has a WP installation on his site, and he wants an MU installation over his current one.

Any idea how to get it done?</content>

        <content>Hi Sawhney89,

I'd love to help, but it would not be this week - really kinda busy this week. What about mid week next week?

I am also not very familiar with the kind of installation of WPMU that you need to do, so I will need time to research too.</content>

The reason (probably) why the addresses did not work is because the wildcard DNS settings are not set. Have you set up the wildcard DNS settings yet?</content>

<content>Interesting. But sometimes its tough to really decide if a blog is a corporate blog or a personal professional interest blog isn't it? Especially for a small company - the types where "the person is the company and the company is the person" - does it mean that everything he puts online has to become so official?</content>

<content>I think this would be a wonderful way to build small sites quickly and yet still have the CMS/Blog feel. Raring to give it a go!

Also, some hosting providers charge an extra fee for mySQL databases, this could help them!</content>

        <content>Great thoughts Lorelle.

I've been to a few sites that use this feature, and I really find it annoying too - I'm there to read content on the page, and this preview thing was really distracting.

On my own blog site, I've already had enough external javascripts to slow my page load time (like StatCounter and Google Ads) - so adding another one doesn't sound right too.

I guess if the blog author really wanted a screenshot of a page, he would have done it and made it an image :)

Actually, I remember there is one ad system that does something like that too (only that it pops up an ad instead of the preview of the page), and that was quite popular in forums!</content>
