@GK I saw a plugin called Theme Switcher which may do that, although I haven't been able to make it work.
@Bill - thanks, will check that out
@Kasper - no - a spellchecker of sorts? Not sure it's worth the bandwidth because...
@Dan - it may well slow it down, yes - I recently tested my site on http://ismyblogworking.com/ and the only thing it brought up was that it could be faster. I think Analytics is the main culprit, but may slim it down (although writing this post made me reactivate a few)

It's a pretty general question, so I'll drill down to specifics: firstly, you need to know what sort of journalism you want to practise: both in terms of employers and subject: local journalism? science journalism?
Then you need to be doing it yourself already. Get a blog, engage with the communities of interest.
And based on all the above, do some research, and find which college is going to cover the skills and knowledge that you specifically need, and which fits your personality and interests. No one can answer that question for you except yourself.

Thanks for saving me having to type out my own thoughts! Agree totally.
I also wonder about the line about 'much lower standards of training' than the NCTJ - which implies the NCTJ has particularly high standards. Not the impression I get from educators who have to work with them, students who do the courses, or newspaper management. And they certainly don't appear to be doing anything to produce journalists who can adapt intellectually to the new media environment (I'm not talking about token video skills).
PS: Perhaps highlighter-photoblogging could catch on?
