Sylvia- I feel you! and I think you should Trademark that phrase. I've never felt as burnt out as I have in the last couple weeks. Between the frustration of trying to help reform my school, getting my voice out there about reforming the system, add-on projects that come with going over and beyond job "requirements," and a dedication to students, my fatigue is at an all-time high. However, I still have this underlying desire which I'm sure will push me through this down phase. Most of the educators that I know in a similar position all have that desire and will be back to fight after a little break.

For now, I'm carrying an umbrella with me because it seems like I'm downwind a lot lately.

Im starting small. Trying to give the kids a little voice first by having them respond to prompts in a blog. The blog acts more like a discussion board in this regard. I use blogger, public settings, and tell kids to pick a nickname and use firstname lastinitial when they comment. After getting them used to the blog format, will move to having them each contribute assignments in personal blog. Somewhere in there have them blog about non-school stuff so that they can get their full voice. Continually making non teacher voice comments, using conversational tone so as not to ever belittle or "grade" a post.

My Westie Max looks the same and moves the same. The way he holds the ball in his mouth, tilts his head, with his front paws down and hind in the air. Westies are awesome.

My assistant principle and I recently spoke at the Virtual Schools Symposium about this topic. We proposed using social networks in schools as a method of reaching students where they feel comfortable. At a place where like to hang out. There are so many wonderful benefits to using social networks but there are some pretty hardy concerns. The audience reflected many of the questions you bring up and there are not a lot of great answers yet. Ning has the wonderful capability of administering your own networks and if you are using it in an educational setting they will remove the Adsense so it is a completely walled garden. However, that does not eliminate the students need to test boundaries and discover their identity which they can do on an open network with few restrictions.
