I previously had read Why no Wordpress, and go Habari as you can see in the comments there. I really appreciated the thoughtful and balanced post, but here it seems something is eating you.

Do I think WordPress development and product are ideal? No, and if I did, I would likely move onto something else. As long as things are moving forward, I'm eager to participate -- I like hard problems, and WordPress being so popular and having such diverse participates provides awesome challenges.

&gt; As I see it, the "Wordpress.org community" provides
&gt; little more than free bug fixes for Automattic.

That's the venom I was referring to, and is absolutely ridiculous. <b>WordPress</b> directly benefits.

Having read every bug report created in the last year, WordPress has a huge number of diverse participants.

There are some great points in your response, but the aggressive nature of your response leaves me not wanting to continue this conversation. If you are interested in having a polite conversation, you know where to reach me.

Man, I've had no joy posting a comment here -- no problems on any other blogs. coComment seems to be working again after being broken when last I posted here, so at least I can put it thorough that. I will also take the exceptional step of logging into TypeKey.

This time, I was smart enough to make a comment of my comment:

Attacks like that, and other posturing by Anil of late has sparked my already honed competitive nature ;-)

You could have left it at your apology. The freedoms provided by the licensing of WordPress and PodPress are very relevant in the context of your implicit accusation -- prior to apologizing, and as I
described, you are well aware of these freedoms and the important of stewardship, as in other discussions you have spoken to the stewardship that Six Apart will provide when MT becomes *cough* open source.

You speak about platitudes, but then how else would one describe parts of that last paragraph in your proceeding comment? "the Movable Type team and in fact all of Six Apart is listening"?

I'm happy that you went full circle, creating what sounds like an excellent plugin for MT, and took this journey back to taking care of people.

All bloggers benefit from such a climate.

PS. Your mention of the Atom Working Group and the importance of the related standards reminds of the trivial fix of TypePad AtomPub support I'm still waiting on over two weeks later.

Our success so far is indeed a great confirmation to a business with open source participation at its core.

Christian Mohn, I don't know who suggested to you that code goes from WordPress.com to WordPress on a case by case basic. That just isn't true. In fast that would be stupid of us, as it would create maintenance burden and risk code quality.

The business side is all to do with the execution. Anyone with the knowledge, experience, passion and dedication our team has could do the same thing. It is all about the execution, and I'm very happy that I work with the very best.

Could we do it without the WordPress.org community? Who knows, but many members of the team wouldn't be interested in finding out. Myself and many members of the team wouldn't sleep well if we didn't feel we were living up to our potential in trying to influence the world to move towards free culture.

All WordPress members benefit from WordPress.com and Automattic's successes.

I don't know anything about any acquisition offer, but I do heartily disagree with your post.

First, I ask what is your goal of this post, and what concerns or frustrations are really at the heart of venom?

Our success is indeed a great confirmation to a business with open source participation at its core.

Trickles back to WordPress? If you have a bone to pick, be straight about it. WordPress and WordPress.com are continuously being synced. It exposes a ton o' bugs in the software, and that benefits every one.

I don't know who suggested to you it is a case by case basic. That isn't true. In fast that would be stupid of us, as it would create maintenance burden and risk code quality.

The business side is all to do with the execution. You are correct that anyone with the knowledge, experience, passion and dedication our team has could do the same thing. It is all about the execution.

You are also correct that open source means a lot more than just releasing code using an open source license. Myself and many members of the team wouldn't sleep well if we didn't feel we were living up to our potential in trying to influence the world to move towards free culture.

Most if not all of the Automattic team will be at WordCamp. Most members arrive in town right before it.

WordPress 2.3 <a href="http://wordpress.org/about/roadmap/">release is planned for</a> September 20, 2007

WordPress 2.0.x main reason for being maintained is a commitment by Ryan, Mark, and others to the people that use WordPress, not whether or not it is included in a Linux distro -- though, of course, we are sensitive to do meet the needs that allow it be included.

WordCamp: Matt joined the discussion at http://www.litwc.com/2007/06/07/where-is-the-wordcamp-2007-information-blasts/ and says “it’s coming together” and I am sure registration will be enabled and the 411 will be shared ASAP.

"I don’t think the older versions are being maintained and they should be."

As Matt described WordPress 2.0 is being maintained for a long time.

I don't think Ryan Filtzer made a "throwaway comment", because it directly response to Wank's assertion that 1.5 is good enough for her.

If someone really did want to maintain 1.5 or any version, I would do what I could to get those patches accepted -- though a little link love would be all that was necessary for who ever was maintaining it to be findable.

Skippy, I think Habari is an awesome initiative. Claiming "far less bloat" when it is incomplete, by your own words, is a strange assertion. It will be interesting if that assertion is substantiated -- some friendly competition and collaboration.

Ray, back to your original questions. With a little bit of subversion (svn) know how you can do the kind of things you described being interested in.
Try $svn diff http://svn.automattic.com/wordpress/tags/2.1.2 http://svn.automattic.com/wordpress/tags/2.1.3 &gt; wp-2.1.2--2.1.3.diff

It would be some work, but maybe at some point it will make sense to do something similar to http://www.mozilla.org/security/announce/ with embargoed notices. Will that become customers expectations? I don't envy the work, and WordPress is simply, but I hope people's expectations for software quality increases.

PS. your "Submit Comment" button looks disabled in Linux/Firefox 2.0.0.3 and is a small button.

I regularly talk, IM, or email with people that are thankful that installed WordPress comes with a RTE editor. Finding a RTE editor does not seem to be a hurdle people want to overcome once they get it installed, or often someone else did the install for them.

Bulk: maybe, has someone made it into a plugin?

That bulk probably buys a lot of flexibility. I was 1st exposed to TinyMCE with Drupal. At Flock we also used it for a whlie in the browser, but it did not make sense b/c a lot of TineMCE's code is to make it compatible with all the different browsers and Flock already knew what browser it was.

I wonder what percentage of people that use WordPress were already using it prior to 2.0? Have they suffered to accommodate the larger audience?

TinyMCE directory can be removed from your install without any negative experience if you don't like it.

Two JavaScript libraries: prototype was there from 2.1 and it would be poor manners to remove it there any time soon. jQuery seems to be the one that people have settled on (for the next while anyway ;-) )

"How to get your OpenID URL account to work"? This is the WordPress podcast right? So do it the WordPress way. There are a number of plugins for this, I use <a href="http://willnorris.com/projects/wp-yadis/">wp-xrds</a> by <a href="http://willnorris.com/">Will Norris</a>.

A link to deactivates all your plug-ins is also in WordPress 2.2 . The origin of the recommendation to deactivate all of your plugins is because of caching plugins (<a href="http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/upgrading-wordpress/#comment-100841">photomatt explains</a>)

Database Backup is a great plugin and as miklb expresses the Export functionality is not yet comparable.

I also look forward to when upgrade is only a few clicks. Before we get there, I am eager for new version of WordPress and plugin notification, which is a hot topic on wp-hackers mailing list.

The new Blogger Importer is in 2.2! ;-)
The change would just be too extensive to get it into WordPress 2.1 . Using <a href="http://wordpress.com">WordPress.com</a> to do the import and then export seems like a reasonable work around, allowing us to focus on getting WordPress 2.2 done.

Imagine if Blogger provided an exporter, wouldn't that be nice!

Nit: David Weitz is correct about how to say Debian. "It is pronounced as the corresponding syllables of these names in American English: /'dɛbiən/." (<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Debian">from Wikipedia</a>)

I made a small donation. Cheers.

What browser are you using? Regarding "Search the Post Editor TextArea" Firefox 2.0 has this functionality thanks to Peter Kasting. If I recall correctly IE for quite some time.

KnowNow: I am looking forward to the potential for them to participate in the testing community. Hopefully, they will bring their own expertise and requirements to testing WordPress.

David, I didn't quite follow your PayPerPost comment about a Coke employee talking favorably about their employer. I don't think whether the comment is favorable or not is the main issue, but disclosing whether it is is a paid post or you have a vested interest seems like a good thing when the relationship is not clear. As you say there will likely soon be a legal requirement.

GPL: <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU_General_Public_License">GNU General Public License</a>, not the common mistakes of thinking the P is for Purpose or Protection. I asked about the <a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-legal/2004/03/msg00083.html">origin of the license's name'</a> a couple of years ago.

&lt;a href="http://www.tamba2.org.uk/T2/archives/2006/11/02/ttfn-podz/"&gt;Podz prefers Mark now.

Keep up the incredible and essential work!

Sue Gardner [1] during her Northern Voice session on Blog Design for Everyone [2] commented on the large quantity and quality of Wordpress themes (skins).

There are a number of sites dedicated to spotlighting good Wordpress themes.

Your review of the last release was one of the most insightful! I look forward to some more insights into what we did well and not so well in this release.

Now, I am going to have to update that Flickr set, which is already so large that Flickr does not handle it well.
