hi peter. no offence taken. we all have a limited budget here on the mission field and watch our pennies carefully, especially when they come from someone else. i probably would not suggest paying a blogger to travel the globe for a few posts but i would support a missionary traveling the world to advance God's missional purpose through hands-on ministry and then i would hope he or she would put up a few blog posts to add some transparency to their ministry, as well as giving milage to the stories and research and observations that are probably quite valuable.

Sanctimonious? You might be right and I will think on it.

But from my perspective, if I had to raise money for a pastor to spend 20 hours a week preparing a 30 minute sermon for a single congregation, I would have to compromise my standard and jeapordize my reputation as someone who gives wise and practical direction for the dispersing of mission funds.

In fact, we dont have funds for church buildings OR pastoral salaries, let alone the luxury of a 20 hour prep time for a message.

But maybe I am too much of a pragmatist? What do you think?

hi tim. i agree with a few of these and disagree with much more. overseas, where i work as a missionary, most of the new churches we start would be considered "emerging" but they are not "disillusioned " with church - they ARE church.

we DO see it as a movement that is at least 20 years old and we see USA as quite behind many other countries.

most of us do not think Carson represented the movement well with his book. gibbs and bolger is better. thanks for recommending it.

good stuff david. another thing about teh missional lifestyle is that is a two way thing - was give and we also receive. we bless and are blessed. we transform culture and also find shavings of culture changing who were are.

just like Jesus "grew" and was influenced by the culture he incarnated himself in, speaking like a Galilean, "acting as if he was going further" on the Emmaus road like a native would do.

mission shaped, you could say.

Johnathon, I think her strength is that she has a great handle on the larger Christian picture and can see clearly how the newer emerging movements fit into the scheme of things.

but she is a publisher and she sees the emerging church through publishing eyes. The positive side of that is that what she writes is stunningly fluid and will find a wide readership. The downside is that she tends to see the emerging church world through the lens of authors and books and published writings and since MOST leaders of the emerging church have not published books and a small minority of Seminary-trained, white, middle class AMERICAN males on staff at churches have published books, the author-is-leader equation is not always the most accurate lens to use.

But this book is Phyllis and you get Phyllis and she is Phyllis and she is SUPERB and her perspective is superb. She finds things that others dont.

we all have an angle . . .

hi michael. not a lot of data and numbers in the book but it all seems to stand up to scrutiny to me. you will have to read the book to make your own decision.

for a fuller description of how uk has been ahead for 20 years, you might try becky garrison's writings as an American looking at the scene.

i think one of the strengths of the movement is that it cannot be owned by any organization or group or country. but within those little worlds, its not too hard to describe it in a way that makes sense, at least to some people. i know i have been doing that for a decade or more.

i have seen conferences fail because someone decided to pay a high profile speaker to attract more people to the confernce, then the conference fees went up to pay for the speaker (s) and then it became all about the speaker to get their moneys worth and it ended up a talking head festival again.

it was actually quite simple. i talked about how those who are strong/powerful enough to get themselves out of trouble by their own resources are offended by the cross of Christ because He did everything and there is nothing to add - which hurts our pride,

and those who are normally smart enough to think their way or strategize into the next level are offended by the cross because it is foolishness and doesnt call on their abilities - ITS A GIFT! which is offensive.

and the fact that Jesus didnt come to write a book or leave a superior philosophy behind but rather provided the way through the cross and formed a community of very ordinary people to shape and form the tradition of the way.

i dont believe its possible to approach the cross without being offended. This is why the cross is a stumbling block to Jews (who look to power/miraculous) and Greeks (who like wisdom)

good point. most emerging churches i have come across dont have a single "pastor". only the more traditionally structured churches.

however, with so much nasty criticism going on around us, mark's comments are welcome.

yeah . . . a lot of us need to get out there and do it .. . but a few need to hang back, interpret whats happening, and make sure the slow ones arent dragging their feet. much nicer to do it together. much more . . . . SPECIAL . . . dont you think?

cool. thanks lance. and i think that about wraps up the comments. i will leave it open so if anyone has anything they HAVE to say then they can.

thanks all for the chat.

i was thinking yesterday of the global impact of Moody. The two most formative years of my life - much more than any bible college or seminary - were the years i spent with Operation Mobilization on a ship called Logos. The guy that started it all was a Moody grad named George Verwer. this is ancient history for most of you here - but much of my missional thinking and practise was shaped by my time with OM.

so thank you Moody Bible Institute.

hey everyone. just got back.

MATT - you rock! stop apologizing. i love where you say

"It is my earnest prayer that the emerging church learn what previous polarized sects have not: that truth and love are not at odds, nor are they synonyms."

obviously you are more open and balanced than your first comments allow on first glance.

i think i misjudged you also.

i am sure if everyone on this list of comments were knocking back a coffee at the local cafe (not starbucks) and able to watch each others facial expressions, then we wouldnt have experienced half the misfires we did.

i am tempted to close the comments but i emailed spencer and asked him why LOTS OF PEOPLE assume he is a universalist. it would be good to hear from him in person before we move on.

Layguy . . being an Aussie (i lived there for 7 years) you would know that i have a smirk on my face most of the time and especially when i sound serious.

and just because Australia has had some recent cricket glory does not mean the country will not suffer humiliation when the judgment comes swiftly in the form of a rugby ball, administered by the men in black.

lets not let the word "fire" get clouded at all. lets just answer the question.

and if you dont want to answer wine question, then thats fine also. W.A. Criswell believed it was figurative wine. But he probably held to literal fire.

Not sure if answering literal for one binds you to answer literal for everything in heaven and hell.

any thoughts?

Hey Layguy,

first of all, it sounds like you have already judged which option i have voted for.

that verse talks about fire. No one is questioning that.

This poll is questioning what kind of fire just as the last poll is asking what kind of precious stones will be in heaven.

what do i do with that Scripture? I take it seriously.

Are you saying that only those who voted for your answer are contending for the truth?

Question for you?

Will we drink real literal WINE in heaven with Jesus or will it be a metaphysical, allegorical wine, a heavenly kind of wine that is categorically different in nature than earthly wine?

just asking . . .
