<content>"By furthering the goals of his own distorted sense of religion, he simultaneously furthers the goals of Islamic terrorist groups."

I suspect that the psychological reality in this case is more complicated than just he was motivated by his religious values. It probably has more to do w/ what he was inclined to do under the circumstances in any case and his religious values merely provided further sanction ex post facto. Nothing provides sanction for a person's latent misanthropy more than divine approval and Islam, as history has shown amply, hardly has a monopoly on that.</content>

<content>I believe human beings deserve to live in societies that maximize liberty, equality, and human well being to the greatest extent possible. To the extent that societies enhance liberty, equality and human well being, they progress. To the extent they diminish liberty, equality and human well being, they regress. That's my view in a nutshell.</content>

He knew how to combine fairness, compassion and wisdom in his sentences. I'm sure that he finds the prospect of serving overseas too compelling of an opportunity to turn down. But I wish he would remain in Delaware and serve here in the AG's office. I wish him all the best.</content>

At what point, for those individuals, should the power of the State be reined in by the rights of the individual?"

Slippery slope fallacy.

I doubt very seriously that just because our friends at DL believe it's OK to levy a soda tax that they, say, also believe (or even must believe)it's OK for the state to search and seize property w/o a warrant.

Really, Steve, you sound hysterical here.</content>

<content>Oh, please, Steve, give us a break. You are opposed to these kind of taxes as a matter of dogma. Your "arguments" (often caricatures) against these stray comments on DL amount to little more than special pleading. You are opposed to these kinds of taxes even when they work: e.g., it has been incontrovertibly demonstrated that tobacco taxes have significantly cut tobacco use.

Moreover, if your position remains instantiated, instead of doing us any kind of favor, you would actually cost us money in increased health care costs that result from a high incidence of obesity in our nation. You have your head in the sand if you actually believe that the costs of health problems like obesity don't get passed on to everyone. And don't give me any crap about how these taxes wouldn't keep many from consuming as much soda because the soda industry wouldn't be running TV ads against the proposed soda tax if it weren't true.

The benefits of a soda tax are a no brainer to many except those who dogmatically oppose all federal tax increases.</content>

<content>Nice try and all, but I think that a consistent Libertarian would refuse to pay taxes on anything that he or she believes the government doesn't have the moral and/or constitutional authority to levy taxes for. In short, a consistent Libertarian would pay a reduced tax rate approximated to what the Libertarian believes the government has a right to levy taxes for.

Accordingly, a consistent Libertarian would also refuse to accept those services which he or she refused to pay taxes for.

Also, accordingly, a consistent Libertarian would be self-employed so that he or she would not have taxes withheld by an employer (under, say, an IRS order) at a rate higher than is consonant with the Libertarian's conscience.

So, it's not enough to say that Libertarian's can benefit from government services that they find (for whatever reason) objectionable because they pay for them. That is, it's not enough unless begging the question about why a Libertarian is paying taxes for these services in the first place is a proper way to argue the point.</content>

I'm sure this Harvard study is BS too: 45,000 Americans die every year from a lack of health insurance.

Nancy, Progressive Voices is also history now. Both Marion and I agreed to shut it down. I had to teach on Monday nights and Marion had been working the show for a long time.

So, I'm pretty much out of the loop. Just way too busy to blog. But I hope to make occasional comments on local blogs...time permitting.</content>

<content>I recently read The Loyalists: Revolution, Exile, Settlement by Christopher Moore. First time I read anything about their perspective. I was surprised to learn that many of the Loyalists actually opposed the policies of England that the patriots found so objectionable, but they didn't think that those objections rose to the level of a justification for a revolution.

I'm w/ you, Steve. I think it's important to read works, especially histories, that challenge the status quo interpretation, as long as the re-reading of history is itself a credible (although, perhaps, not a persuasive) interpretation.</content>

<content>Thanks all for your well wishes.

I wish I didn't have to stop blogging. Already I hear news reports that make me itch to write about them. I'm experiencing withdraw. :) But, alas, I'm just too busy.

I'm sure that I'll have some free time on occasion to comment on the local blogs. I'm looking forward to that, in fact. It will be fun to carp and snipe from the sidelines for a change w/o having anything on the line like my own posts to defend. :)

Like I said in my post, the truly great thing about blogging is all the wonderful people I've gotten to know and befriend as a result. I wouldn't have met them otherwise. That by itself has made it worthwhile.</content>

<content>Never forget what the Chinese equivalent of Congress said in the early 80s: "We will embrace capitalism to enhance socialism." Also don't forget that it is now permissible to say in China (it's even taught in their schools) that one of Mao's errors was that he tried to foist a socialist economy on an agrarian society.

Put those 2 together and you get Marx: viz., that a socialist economy can only successfully emerge from a thoroughgoing capitalist one. That's why I think all those foreign companies that invest in China, especially factories, are in for a rude awakening. Those assets will be seized at the point the Chinese Communist Party believes China has the industrial infrastructure to support socialism. And no one will be able to stop them.</content>

<content>"Your corollary is equally idiotic: individuals are never to be considered competent so the state should always have the power to intervene."

That would be fine if it were my corollary, but it's not. So lets dispense w/ that straw man.

I frankly don't know if the state should require children to wear bicycle helmets or not. It depends on a variety of factors like what the science says and how great the increased risk is to not wearing them, etc.

But what is irresponsible is the suggestion that such factors don't matter and the state should be suspected nearly always a priori when it wants to spare children from serious injury or death.</content>

Prove that I have ever called any conservative or libertarian a "terrorist." You can't.

Your reading of the website message ("But they did so by essentially denying it ever existed") is tendentious since they clearly suggest "This event may have existed at one time but been subsequently deleted."

If you had quoted the rest of the message on the error page, your readers would know precisely why the language is worded "may have existed”:

“If you clicked a URL in an email, please check that the URL in your browser matches the one shown in your email client. ***Email clients sometimes load an incorrect URL when clicking a link in an email***.” (emphasis mine)

This is the language of a mechanism, not a plot.</content>

I recently learned about this person from DE Libertarian. I know little about him/her except he claims to know the identities of some anonymous DE bloggers.

I think the race between Korn and Wagner will be interesting because Korn is good at debating issues. And Wagner is no slouch. I think that DE will benefit from the race because of the issues that will be discussed.</content>
