I'm going to jump to the defence of UK bloggers, or at least north of the border. Scotland has a very healthy edublogosphere, full of people churning out the whys. We do feel frustrated, though, at the lack of conversation created from those blogs in the wider 'sphere. Quite often we'll see edubloggers in other places around the world struggling to get grips with, say, Assessment for Learning when, for *months* some Scottish edubloggers have been talking about the long-term effects of their work in this field over the past four years.

Who knows? Maybe they're not of interest. Maybe they're irrelevant for other people. Maybe they're just hard to find in the cacophony of bland Joneses.

I think you're quite right: with what knowledge and understanding teens have of social networks today they are not harnessing them for learning particularly well, but my aspiration is that we start to lead and show them how. The Economist article was never about today, it was about the 'will', the future. I think, in that case, my argument stands (well, of course I do ;-)

It stands, though, on the precursor that educators actually do something about helping young people understand what real communities are about, including those of the type your friend had been part of all his life.

Above all, I've never been too sure about actually using Facebook as an educator to connect with one's students - it's their playground, and as an educator I think it would be a huge turnoff to have the 'teach' join them in the mall. However, we can learn a lot from social networks and the way young people use them (successfully or not) to work out what citizenship understandings are currently lacking in our society.

There are a lot of things we learn and don't learn at school. I would see entrepreneurship a more important skill than typing, Chinese more important than French (and I'm a French teacher). I never learned how to type but ended up as a professional copytaker in the Scotsman newspaper because I could go hell for leather - accurately - on a keyboard whose letters had been erased by the finger nails of the ladies who had worked there for years.

Yes, it's important to type quickly and accurately, but I guess when we only have so many hours other equally vital skills need to have their spot, too.

At the Online Information Conference, probably at the same time as you were writing this :-), we were discussing the same point.

I don't buy the natives/immigrants thing, since most of my net heros are 50+. Rather, I think it is used by many immigrants as an excuse not to engage with change and newness. The one purpose of the phrase is then to describe the chasm of "get-its" and "don't-get-its" that it created.

I do, however, like the phrase digital holidaymakers, to describe those who dabble, are amused but then go back to their analogue existence because it's easier than all the hassle, time and effort or emigrating. Stretching it too far? I wrote more here in case you're interested:

I'm with Graham. For me, it runs against the whole rip, mix and learn ethic we're trying to work with the kids. Nothing on this planet is wholly original, and by the choice of your photos (especially *your* photos) and words you have achieved a better design than any template could offer. Design is more than graphics, it's the producer's result of pulling elements together. Still first place for me, Neil ;-)

Wow! What amazing writing! I wish I had my own class still to be able to try this with them. You've all done so well. Maybe one of the kids could write a wee post on how they approached the game and the writing. Are there any things students/teachers need to look out for in the class when doing this? How did this work time-wise, too - done little by little or all in one go? Sorry for all the questions - just so excited to see someone doing what I was dreaming about just three weeks ago!

When I first started working all over the joint instead of being in one, relatively steady place, I found myself writing lists of things I could do offline when I was on the train (with laptop) on the bus (with iPod and phone) or stuck for ten minutes in between appointments or waiting for said bus or train. Now I've got a good idea before I step out the door what I need to get done in each place but it doesn't stop being webless being a really strange sensation!

The blogs which use Word Press Multi User should really be equipped with Spam Karma anti-spam - as far as I can see they're not. I've sent an email to the guys to get it added asap.

As for Glow, I think the 'educational front end' for many people is going to mean observing teachers and pupils who can make good use of the portal. The tools exist already and, although they will be easier to access and coordinate now, it's still a fair jump for some/many? teachers, if not the kids, to see how all this potential collaboration is going to change what is still a one-class, one-subject curriculum in most of the secondary sector or, at the very best, a limited short-term collaboration with another department or school.

The scenarios might go some way to helping there but IMO it would be great to have some footage of what we believe is 'good practice' that people can, in the very beginning at least, emulate.

I think the Glow team will be chuffed that this is happening but green with envy, Bob? As Robert says education is why we are here, not for US or THEM to provide the top one-stop-shop but to improve the education of our learners, be they 3-18 years, over 18s, teachers, parents...

What I would hope is that the ScotEduBlogs system is integrable into the Glow portal if the user chooses so. In principle it's possible through the XML editor but it's still not 'one-click' enough for me. Once the portal becomes public properly I look forward to seeing a lot more individuals writing content for it to make it a truly national portal and not the portal of one or two organisations.
