I've lived here for more than 20 years, and I've yet to find a decent bagel. Even the usually-wonderful Metropolitan Bakery falls short.

More to the point: WHY is it seemingly impossible to MAKE a good bagel here? Lots of people claim that the water is the problem. So, what is it? A technical problem? Ennui?

Please enlighten us, Phoodie.

Havi, I love your advice: TRY STUFF!

That's the first half of what I tell people when they ask for that foolproof secret marketing formula that only marketers know about:

Try something.

See if it works.

If it does, do it some more.

Repeat.

That's it.

Kate, I agree -- what is often lost is the idea that social media tools are just that: tools. It's not about making the leap to facebook or twitter -- social media sites are going to peak and fall off. It's about paying attention to what your people are using, and connecting with them in a genuine way, no matter what tool you're using.

Havi, I think you're totally right (although, you know, I must be one of the five people at the Kitchen Table that feels like they fit in -- I don't feel like everyone's just like me, but I DO feel like I'm in the right place!).

The Outsider Syndrome. I remember complaining to someone about how, as an arts marketer I felt like the artists were suspicious of me, and the business people didn't take me seriously. This felt especially true when I worked for in fundraising for a museum that is part of a university. I felt too corporate for the curators, and too artsy for alumni relations -- I always felt like the weirdo. But my friend, like Tiara, turned it around and said, well, you can straddle both worlds -- think of it as a strength.

I must confess that's still a stretch for me, even though I see the truth in it. But it's great to see you address it here -- it helps remind me that the Outsider status is all in my head.

So it was the wall itself you were meant to discover? That's pretty amazing.

I started visualizing my stuck after listening to the audio you packaged (I think) with the Procrastination Dissolve-o-matic. And I want to thank you for introducing me to this technique because it's been very powerful.

I'm always struck by how grateful I feel to these stuck patterns after I visualize and try to speak to them -- to think that these patterns, however misguided, have been in service to me for a long, long time, just to keep me from pain. Kind of like what you say about your mother, Tiara - it may be stifling but she's doing it out of love.

Wow, thank you so much.

Ultimately, people give because of the way it makes them feel, so if donors feel even *better* seeing their names on a plaque, where's the harm?

Of course, we should always consider the norms of the group -- if members of your church frown on public recognition, it's probably not the right thing to do.

Newspaper sites SHOULD provide real-time data, as should local TV news and radio sites. They're in the news business, after all. It's the same in the Philadelphia area - when I want to know about something that's breaking, I never find it on a local old-media news site. I'm more likely to hear breaking news on KYW 1060's station (our local all-news radio) than see it on their site.
