Some things just have to be experienced to be understood fully.

I think you've done a great job identifying two of them right here, Michael.

Maki, great point. I'd guess your blog's main topical enemies might be sites/tools that don't make money online (but may claim that they do).

At Visionary Blogging, I write about honing the blog improvement and blogger self-improvement processes using skills that have to do with a sense of vision. So my enemies are things that obscure vision - ignorance, lack of focus, distraction, lack of creativity, information overload, poor time management, laziness, apathy, etc.

So I should probably make that more clear in the design of my blog as well as its content. Thanks for the motivation!

Another way of putting this is that people tend to join groups or buy things not because of what they know, but because of what they feel.

So you should try to make them feel cared about, loved, excited, pampered and all that good stuff. Yes, teach them the facts, but more especially, show them what happiness lies in store for them if they do business with you.

Shannon, thank you. You may not feel like you know how to "do this," but in a way you just did by posting here. The solution is to share your anger. And you should be mad.

I am also a 21st-century American. If all who have ever lived were to form a line in descending order of the privileges and pampering they received in life, I'm sure we would be excruciatingly close to the front. And I fear that the closer to the front of the line people get, the stiffer they let their necks become. They tend to cease turning around toward those less fortunate.

Twice in my life I have left the U.S. to live in less wealthy parts of the world for at least two years. Both times I was overcome by the material poverty and spiritual riches I encountered. And both times I returned angry at the pride and greed of my own nation.

We who have been given much hold in our hands the golden opportunity to empower and nourish the rest of the world.

All would eventually be solved if every generation began to teach the next to think of all people as brothers and sisters and to share material, intellectual and spiritual wealth freely. I believe that will happen someday. You and others like you will be the driving force.

Best wishes Shannon.

Lynn and everyone, thanks for the informative discussion. Our blog network was PR-kneecapped by Google a couple of weeks ago. Since then it's been a scramble to implement the kinds of changes you are all recommending. We're putting nofollow everywhere it needs to go.

It's just hard to swallow given that we've tried so hard to play by Google's rules all this time, and given a good chunk of change to Google via AdSense and AdWords, and still we get treated like we don't matter to them.

So yes, I do think, as others here do, that Google needs to not be in such total control. But unless and until another search engine rises (or several) to challenge its giant market share, things will probably remain this way.

Good synthesis and thoughts, Rick. I'm pretty sure you can limit the coComment feed to just your own comments. I think that's how I have mine set up in Google Reader, anyway. Ping me if you need help.
Also, no need to call it a lifestream/ideastream - not that it's wrong to call it that either, just that you can call it whatever you wish.
Another interesting thing is that you can easily create something like this to "stalk" (let's hope in a positive way) another person around the Web. And of course, you could throw followers off your trail by using unexpected user names, having friends/employees do some publishing under your name, etc. It opens a whole new bag.

EXCELLENT resource, well worth the money, and highly recommended for anyone who wants to succeed at blogging.

I really am itching to integrate coComment into my blog (and all the rest of the KMM blogs for that matter). Great job doing that! I am submitting this comment with the extension disabled to pretend I'm a non-coCo user, but the coComment box still appears - which is a great thing. I assume you are thus able to use coCo to track all comments at your site?

Rick, I haven't felt the funk myself - I'm actually just starting to enjoy being out of grad school and gearing up to post more frequently. There certainly is a lot of duplicated, tired, rehashed content out there, though!

Ann, thanks for mentioning the fun experimental Skypecast we had on Friday. I plan to do another one this week - I'll announce it at BusinessBlogWire.

I'm happy that you're enjoying your initial experiences with Skype and I hope the Skypecast's questionable overall sound quality won't deter you.

By the way, I just read that Skype is now offering FREE calls to ANY phone in the U.S. and Canada till the end of 2006 - that's how I understand it, anyway. Awesome!

Giving up - committing blogicide - is so easy, especially after the honeymoon phase has worn off and before the real rewards start pouring in. To all bloggers, but especially to those who have been blogging for anywhere from two weeks to six months, I say, "Don't give up! Stick with it!"

I've blogged for about seven months now and I'm starting to see a snowball effect of traffic and links - and most especially, respect and relationships. I'm getting to know bloggers who might not have taken me seriously back when I only had a few posts up and didn't know a Meebo from a Mabber (okay, I still don't really know those two apart :)).

Your tip number five is interesting - don't know if I've ever heard it before, but I think I agree. Being prolific becomes a bit less important once you've got a sizable captive audience.

This will sound geeky perhaps, but here goes: "The blogosphere" is a socially constructed concept or identity, not necessarily a reality with that term attached to it. You're exactly right, Jeff. There isn't even a cohesive, unified "we" or "us" to it. Sure, there are trends, unifying characteristics, and other general aspects that can be applied loosely (or tightly) to certain segments of the blogging population, or maybe even to all of it, but we still have to realize that when we say "THE BLOGOSPHERE," we actually mean something else - for example, we are implying a certain political bias, or a certain style of reporting, etc.

I don't think it's wrong to use the term "blogosphere." I just think it's naive to assume that everyone understands it to mean the same thing, or that all blogs somehow agree with one another or follow some mystical rules of physics that apply universally in some sort of collective entity.

These ramblings were brought to you by a grad student in history, hence the "socially constructed" thang. It's a fascinating topic to me, though: the changing ways in which people perceive what's happening to media and the sharing of ideas and information.

I love coComment. The extension for Firefox has made it so much easier to use and I just want to praise the coComment team all day long. I make a LOT of comments all over the place and it gets really hard for me track where and when I make them and what I've said.

Plus, if another coCommenter comes along and responds to any of my coComments, I know about it within five minutes thanks to the nex Firefox extension. Those guys are really on to something amazing with this new tool. It's changed the way I blog - for the better.
