Just going back to GPX, I just uploaded a whole issue to Dropio. Hope the guys from Haymarket don't mind too much, but this is over 10 years old and it obviously didn't make them enough money at the time, so... I didn't buy every issue, I just bought the last two. Looking back, that final issue does seem a bit desperate. Having gone for a distinctly laddish (as Stuart C says, 'Loaded'-style) approach beforehand, the final issue has more stuff for the ladies. It contains "the top 20 sexy drivers of all time", plus a "hunky" poster of Mika Salo! So was it aimed at the lads or the ladies? A bit of an identity crisis in the final issue there. It does have a few good gags in it though. I will write a post on vee8 about what else I found in the attic soon!

As I think I said in another post, they were getting a bad image as being political prostitutes. Being a bit stubborn and refusing to negotiate is probably a calculation that they have made for electoral gain as much as anything else.

Don't worry Grant. I know the past couple of roundups have been on the short side. But as I said, I should be able to devote a bit more time to the roundup from now on. Part of the idea of having guest contributors is to represent a variety of approaches to looking at Scottish blogging -- although I recognise that some may prefer a similar format to appear each week. I have some ideas about the future of the roundup though, so stay tuned for that.

Does this mean anything for actual race coverage though? We all know that ITV have no control over the actual race feed -- we hear James Allen and Martin Brundle complain about the local directors enough. So the fact that ITV's equipment is now 'HD-ready' means that we'll be able to see the dandruff in Steve Rider's hair. Then again, I don't suppose there would be much point in ITV getting HD equipment for F1 if the actual races aren't HD. So fingers crossed!

The point surely with Norway, Iceland and Ireland, as economists will point out, is that smaller nations can outperform bigger ones by virtue of their ability to be robust, flexible and adaptable to the needs of their people.

It depends on how you mean by "outperform". Certainly in per capita terms smaller countries tend to be richer than larger countries -- but this comes at the expense of influence on the world stage. In an increasingly globalised world this is very important. Everybody is looking towards China, Brazil and India as the economic powerhouses of the future. Not Norway and Iceland.

When it comes to business, the fact is that there is no competitive advantage to locating yourself in Scotland when London is nearby.

In an independent Scotland, why would anybody locate in, say, the Highlands when you can locate yourself in nearby Edinburgh or Glasgow. Or London?! Independence will bring little comfort to people in genuinely poor areas of Scotland in this regard.

Thanks Will. That's why I posted my response here instead of there as well. I guess I shouldn't have ever mentioned him on the SBR at all for that reason, but it's too late for that now...

He posted a comment on the SBR site itself as well. He claims he's "just discovered" it (despite the fact that he wrote about it on his blog almost two weeks ago) and says the he has been "excluded" from "my" site (despite the fact that it is a collaborative effort). He misses the fact that millions of other blogs are also "excluded" from the SBR because they do not meet its criteria. The criteria are simple. You have to either be from Scotland or write about Scottish politics -- Councillor Terry Kelly passes this one You have to write well-written, thought-provoking blog posts -- Councillor Terry Kelly fails this one So there are two options. Councillor Terry Kelly can write some good posts and he will be included in SBR posts that I write. Or I can include him in roundups regardless -- but that would completely go against the whole point of the SBR, which is to highlight the best of Scottish political blogging. I should also note that these points only apply to the roundups that I write. CuriousHamster will have his own reasons for including people or not, as will the various guest posters we'll be bringing on board over the coming months.

Oh yeah, I must have accidentally clicked the massive 'DOWNLOAD!!' graphic on the Firefox homepage which automatically downloads the en_US one. Doh! Ah well, all sorted now, thanks! By the way, last night I accidentally closed a tab by hitting its little X, which seems to be one of the biggest complaints about it. Still, that's what about:config is for, right? Now I have no Xs at all! Yay! Not that it even matters when accidentally close a tab with the 'recently closed tabs' feature. I take it this is new? Because this is seriously cool. All those times I've lost massive blog posts by accidentally clicking away. It'll never be an issue again!
