I do have one problem with Akismet though, and thats the centralized information gathering it does. Not only does it make your own site rely on a third-party service that might disappear at some point, it also gathers a lot of information on valid comments as well as spam.

But, for a lack of a better alternative, Akismet would be a good choice.

Sure, but this requires using a second VM to and mounting the partition you need to extend. See "Step 4: For this step you will need an additional Virtual Machine running Windows Server 2003".

The method outlined above doesn't need a second VM, and you can do the partition extension inside a nice friendly GUI-based application like GParted.

I think I might have been a tad premature when doing that, it seems like they are back to their old tricks with detecting the regional options and forcing a localization an you.

As far as I can tell, the only way to go around it is to set the system regional settings to US when running System Update and when installing their applications and drivers.

Lenovo should really take this seriously, and not force localized versions on users, like myself, that don't want them.

Thats true, but it implies an online shrink process, not an offline one. The shrink too provided with VMware Server is what is called when you do the shrik process via the VMware Server Console. It need VMware tools installed inside the VM, and the VM must be active.

What I'm looking for is a tool that can take a .vmdk file and then run shrink on it, without having to boot it. Main usage scenario is for distributed Virtual Appliances, like the Gallery one. If you spend a lot of time testing it, uploading images and so on, the virtual disk files grow, and the filesize stays even if you reset the Gallery installation and wipe all it's image data. Since the Gallery appliance is based on rPath, with no window managers installed, we can't do shrinkage of the VM if we want to.

Well, an inexpensive solution would be to install VMware Server somewhere, and use that to do "inline" shrinking of the VMs. But, I would love a command line tool, that way it could even be scheduled to run at night when the VMs aren't in use.

Well, my "Appliance" is not that generic, nor is the base debian install small enough to distribute. I hope someone who really knows how to build VMware appliances will pick this up though.
