Here's the deal: Microsoft doesn't always have the best track record when it comes to quality products. I don't even have an iPod but I would splurge on one before I bought the Zune. If I'm going to lay down the cash I need to know it's going to last me and the and that the hardware and software will be dependable.

Besides. Microsoft will never be able to appeal to the same market Apple does. No contest.

Hi Guys.
I have used both the Zune and the iPod (Classic and Shuffle)
Zune sucks. Its Zune software on the PC is a pain. Compare that to iTunes - really no effort required for doing even new stuff.

Actual Zune interface is also tacky. But that may be because iPods controls are revolutionary. But patented interface or otherwise, Zune did come out after iPod had been released for a substantial time. Microsoft had experienced the quality of the product that was in the market. Is this the best that they could do?

I am really glad they didn't decide to put a startup sound in Vista. I would personally be quite annoyed if my computer made some un-desired sound every time I turned it on. I have no problem with system sounds, as long as there is a simple way to turn them off. And any sound that is still heard when the system is muted seems unacceptable to me.

Okay im a teenager, and i will say that having an Ipod isn't as much of a big deal anymore seeing as a lot of kids can't afford one. On that note though,I've had both a Zune and an Ipod, and out of bolth, i kept the Ipod. Why? Because of the little things, one the Ipod is smaller and holds less, this may not seem like a big issue, but it is since most people stick thier media player in their pocket. another one is i love itunes. You can basicaly find anything you want on there. Movies, your favorite tv shows, and music videos. Third would be it works on windows and mac, which is good because everybody i know has a different computer. There's more products from third parties out there for ipods. and finally Its and easy to use product without complications. Your ipod freezes up you push 2 buttons, and voila its fixed.

Hi, i worked seven years with win XP professional to my best satisfaction, because windows XP is a fine operating system.

If currently your computer does not contain 2 gigs of RAM (preferably 3 for a 32 bit version, but XP supports no more then 2 gigs of RAM), and also does not have a newer CPU on board like a Dual Core( a P4 is still a very decent CPU, owever compared to a dual core at an also 3 Ghz clockspeed the P4 sadly stays behind) and also does not have a graphical card with minimally 128MB (256 MB are preferable 512 MB are better), then except if you plan to purchase a new computer stay with XP it will be supported until 2014 by Microsoft.

Vista is just an excellent system its a really very well over thought OS including some eyecandy, but when you do have a decent CPU like my own E8200 Dual Core at 2.66Ghz, 3 gigs of RAM and a Nvidia 8800GT then Vista works a lot faster then XP ever did to me its also very stable, but i got used to stability after my often crashing win 98SE system, because XP never crashed in seven years talking 10-15 hours a day running intensive software and the latest games, no problem at all.

There is no way i would want to go back to XP, but for people whom are thinking to buy a new system (a Vista ready system can be had for 40o euros even less, but spend 200 euros more and you look at a high end system instead of a cheap, eventually disappointing, step in model).

Anyway like i said if you were thinking to get a new computer make sure it has atleast a Dual Core on board preferably a quadcore so my preference is Intel and my favorite quadcore is the i7 that's a jewel of current technology and no i am not that fond of AMD's CPU's, however these CPU are by far not to call bad and they are a lot cheaper offering almost the same prestations compared to an intel on the same clockspeed.

Its not that you can say that a dual core at 3 Ghz is to compare with 2 CPU at 3 Ghz no you look at an about 80% improvement and from a dual core to a wuadcore you look at 100% improvement compared to the dual core.
Dont forget to use the readyboost option in Vista this is not extra RAM this is extra cache for your harddrive to acces a lot faster and it does speed up your computer, especially when you only have 1 gig of RAM.

When you buy a new system these days you get a voucher to upgrade to windows 7 that OS is based on Vista and its said that windows 7 is like Vista when it would be really ready, but that's exaggerated, because service pack 1 and 2 for Vista are present and together with those SP's AND decent hardware you have an excellent system ready for the future.
Win 7 is not a resource eater and can do with a lot less still its the best OS what almost available for the public now.
Its not possible to upgrade from XP to windows 7, but from Vista to win 7 is possible.

Anyway lots of people who complained first about Vista now say they dont want to work without it anymore and i can only say they are right, but to get an idea you really need to spend some time behind a vista computer until you might feel to upgrade to win 7 with your free voucher.

Remember people the only reason why Vista didn't run properly is because its resource hungry so when the resources are simply not present you get a Vista system what gets bothered by hiccups, but get the 2 gigs of RAM minimally get the videocard 256 Mb minimally(to get the aero eyecandy) and a Dual Core minimally and you will love working with Vista.
So far thanks for reading my lengthy reply.

Best regards, Freek. ps dont let yourself influence by bad experienced from others better be your own judge.

AS3 is built on ES4. It is a very cool language as is Javascript2 in which it is designed from. Microsoft is seeing the developers cling to this (coincidentally it drives Flash9/Flex3) and the competition is heating up.

Usually Microsoft just does this to buy some time.

ECMA4/javascript2 is the way to go. Everything is better the OO, the event handling, smaller scripts, ES4 is also compatible with ES3 so what the deal? The only bad part is it supports getters and setters, why oh why start the bloat? Totally unneeded concept in today's languages, you can have properties without getters and setters especially client side.

I have a Mac. I hate my Mac, because every time I turn it on, it blares a stupid sound at me. If I press 'Mute', my key press (they put 'mute' on the KEYBOARD??!?!?) gets buried under the 500 other processes the system is doing, and the sound blares anyway.

I instinctively hit mute again when the sound starts blaring. Two minutes (it feels like) later, I'm interrupted by the computer telling me it's muted and unmuted itself, and playing an unmute sound to remind and taunt me.

The same happened with my old Windows laptop - by the time I'd pressed mute (or, more likely, hammered sound down, because modern laptops don't tell you whether they're muted or not until they've booted up), it's too late. I've disturbed everyone around me, and it's my computer's - sorry, Steve Balls and some anonymous Apple engineer's - fault. And I hate them for it, every time.

Even worse, my new Sony laptop has yet another sound! This one plays even if all sounds are disabled and even if I keep the laptop on mute permanently! It's hardware!!! ARGH!!!!! I've spent LOADS of money on a laptop, but the manufacturers have punished me by preventing me from using it in public unless I know how to hack the BIOS or whatever it is. I HATE SONY!!! And Apple. And Microsoft.

These feelings of burning hatred really mess with my (what was it again?) "spiritual side of the branding experience".

i believe that in about 5 years the zune will definately be the superior mp3 player over ipod. How many generations of the ipod has apple gone through? 6? the zune is about to be in its second generation. No wonder it seems so inferior. Once microsoft improves the product line, makes better use of the wifi feature, and makes better design decisions everyone will want it.

Okay, clearly there have been changes to the zune since you wrote this. I just want to point out a few things.
1: The zune's 3-inch screen is awesome.
2: The controls take only about 30 seconds to master.
3: It includes EVERYTHING you need. You have to buy iTunes separatly for iPod (i don't like Apple's way of doing this)
4: It now has smaller flash models and a higher capacity model with touch controls.
5: Ever since the original release, updates have allowed it to work with more formats.
6: There are a few more color options (i know it isn't that important but...)
Granted Apple was first at this market, and has been the greatest since then. But, in my opinion (and this may be affected by the fact that the only iPod i ever had anything to do with never worked), its time for the zune to take the throne. Of course the player you buy really depends on what you want. Apple fanboys will always love the iPod. But the time of the zune is coming, and it showed an extreme amount of improvement since its launch, and it'll get even better. I have nothing against the iPod, i just love the zune.

Has anyone else noticed how the sound is similar to 'new york, new york'? Meh, maybe it was just me.

The thing which is REALLY annoying is that the sound plays BEFORE you're allowed to login. It would have been fine if the sound played when CTRL+ALT+DEL was ready, but, the sound plays, then you still have to wait for the login prompt.

Anyway, thanks for showing me how to turn it off.

I am so fed up with the Compaq laptop with Vista that I bought two years ago. In frustration, I kept going back to my older Compaq with XP. As it's LCD display continued to fail, I finally migrated all the way over to the new machine. Today, I searched on "what is better in Vista" just to see if there's something positive that I'm missing. I ended up here - where misery loves company. As far as I know Bill Gates has never offered an apology and an even-steven opportunity for me to trade back to XP. Did such an ethical move never occur to him? My first "computer" was a Canon Cat with a single font text only Compuserve connection. I've been using Windows for over twenty years. My next computer will not use a Bill Gates operating system. He and his company are way too big for their britches and not playing square with those who provided the bucks for their growth. (I've also had it with HP/Compaq which can't seem to get little things like the power switch, the power connection, the volume control, the keyboard, or the indicator lights right.)

Haven't found a way to go back to classic hotmail, but I have been using a tool called "Hotmail Popper" from Custom Fit Software (search google for it if you like, I think it's like $17.50 USD). This enables you to run a POP client like Eudora, Outlook, Outlook Express, Thunderbird, Pegasus, etc., and get your Hotmail as if it were POP mail. Eliminates having to use WLM/WLH on your home PC, but if you travel and want to check in on hotmail from an internet cafe or PC that's not your own, you'll naturally still have to use the web client.

Robert,

Praise God you have the courage to share your personal challenges and courage so openly. I watched my mother slowly die of cancer in 1998...and I literally watched her pass from the physical bonds of this world. I am confident she left to be with her Lord and Savior, and is in a far better place today. Spend every waking second you can with her...take it from me, you will remember them and treasure them for the rest of your life. Make sure she knows how much you love her. Apologize for the things that have haunted you growing up. Tell her your thoughts, dreams and aspirations. Love her as much as you can, mate. I pray that your time together in the days ahead are blessed with clarity of thought and full of remembrance of happy times together. I also pray that she knows her Savior and is ready to meet Him. Thanks again for being so open to sharing your life with us...it is a poignant and wonderful reminder that we are all connected.

God bless.

I have a zune and I love it. One of my friends also bought a zune and we used the wi-fi, no big deal. Then my same friend found a video ipod on the ground. he got everything he needed for it, tried to use it and got angry he came in to school and said that he hated i-tunes and that the zune software is so much simpler to use.
also, the updates make it very cool because when apple adds new features to the ipod, you have to go out and spend a couple hundred dollars on a new one while with zune, you can get updates to enhace the expiriance. perhaps games will be on the way (if not, that's NOT why I bought my zune, it was for music and video) but ms is working on the zune.
And also again, who cares about the color of your music device!? and if that's what you're looking for, zune has plenty of colors. even some unusual colors that show that you are't an ipoder. also more duable and while walking with it just in your pants pocket and if they're baggy, you know you have it unlike the ipod nano's.
Zune: not winner yet, but soon. once the word is spread around...

It is obvious that the zune IS NOT on the same level as the ipod, but i would guess in the near future the zune will surpass the ipod. I currently own a zune and i had an ipod before it. ONE THING MOST PEOPLE WHO HAVE OWNED IPODS FAIL TO TELL ANYBODY is that IPODS HAVE A RESTRICTED CHARGE AMOUNT ON THEM, SO THEY PRETTY MUCH KILL THEMSELVES IN ABOUT A YEAR, and that SUCKS. The zune does not do that, which i like very much, i dont wanna funnel out $250 a year just to have good portable music. The zune software is also much better then itunes, it has subscription options to where YOU CAN BUY UNLIMITED SONGS for only 14.99 a month usd, so for the price of an average cd on itunes, you can get unlimited downloads for a month on zune software.

Overall while the ipod may be better now, the zune will surpass it soon once people realize what is going on.

Dittos to what Dr. S Says. Been using Vista Ultimate for a few weeks now. Been searching everwhere to find how to turn off the "Unwelcoming" sound. Now I know. I can't. HUH!

TweakVI actually has a tweak to turn off the "Unwelcoming" sound. Does it work? NO. Didn't they know it wouldn't. Duhuh.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! To Microsoft. Who are they to make this decision for me. I'll tell you who I am. I am the end user who paid $319 for Vista Ultimate 64 bit only to now have Microsoft tell me I can't do what I - want with it? Well, I'd like to tell you what to do with your "Unwelcoming" sound, not to mention your annoying little UAC permission alerts. I killed that damned thing two times over(after turning it off, it turned itself back on when I caused a burp in the system with some of my user inclinations. And it refused to be turned off again. I had to disable the sumbitch.) Just wish I could have given it the slow and torturous death it deserves. Talk about twisted evil!

Truthfully, it isn't a bad little sound the first, say, 50 times you hear it. But the 1000th time? I mean, even "It's a Beautiful World" by Satchmo (one of my favorites BTW) would become a Chinese torture test after hearing it that many times. Microsoft computer engineering/design/programming et al geeks, just put it together leave the customizing to me. I don't want to be forced into driving your "stock" model please.

Like I really need the computer to tell me when it is ready. Do I have eyes to see and ears to hear (what I choose)? And you know what, when the computer "tells me it is ready for use," I probably want be anyhow.

I'll stop now, though I could go on for volumes. DUDES!

We all know the Zune isn't as good as the iPod YET! The Zune has a lot of potential. When they make the next Zune it'll be a lot better, and will hopefully be able to combat the iPod, or at least pose a threat.

Besides, iPod is too popular. I'd rather do something against the crowd than with it. So I can't wait to (probably) get a Zune (still doing research).

from the reviews i have read the zune and i-pod sound equal. i own an i-pod nano. i have it full and the screeen is broken. i am looking for a new music player. the only reasons i am going for the zune us the bigger screeen, radio, and less fragile. but i found a sweet deal for a video i-pod for 180 bucks. if you have a lot of music from itunes then get an ipod. i do not have a lot of music from itunes. i only have about 30 or so songs. most of my songs are from cds. i dont listen to podcasts and i am not a video freak. i am straight forward music junky. there is only one video that i would put on it and it is one that i made. i am just looking for the device that is less complicated. the touch wheel is annoying and the ipod is to fragile. i am a rough kid and the zune is more durable. i think a made my decision. the zune. i might get the ipod since i can get for fourty dollars cheeper but i dought it. bottom line. if you download a lot of music and you dont rough around. get an ipod. if you have a large cd collection and you run around a lot get a zune.

Funny. I found this article while googling for a super quickfind on how to kill the intro to Win 2000 (look, i just had a hunch it was going to be buried in an awkward location). Anyway this article (with all due respect) is referring to some seriously wacko comments. Seriously, don't force the intro music on me, don't make me go buy a mac because that will tip me. Don't make me do it!

Anyway, in utter disbelief i thought, what the heck lets waste just a few more minutes of life finding some kind of setting i'm so used to it now i'm numb. After about 10mins of fumbling around (note:i'm a senior software developer and interaction designer) after a few blind turns, i discovered the path. I'll let it speak for itself, and don't try to rebut or i'll have to unleash an article about my favourite "insert signature" interaction WTF i found in Outlook.

Count the clicks (and yes yes i know it's not just about minimising clicks but this is ridiculous)...

Start -> Control Panel... -> (wait for 5seconds since it's at startup?) -> Sounds and Audio Devices -> Sound Tab -> Then in 'program events:' you have to click around 20 times depending on the programs you have installed and select 'Start Windows' -> Click the play button (to confirm this is indeed the object of your hatred) -> Click the dropdown to change the sound -> (discover about 35 options) -> fumble around trying a few out of curiosity (hey don't blame me, you gave me the options and made me think!) only to give up and select the (none) option that's about 30 rows up (remember my poor little eye muscles?) -> Click OK.

I'm sorry but this is just not good enough. I'm not even going to install Vista i'm just going to see what others who have more faith than me have to say. But at the moment i'm eying up a macbook pro. I am definitely not into the hype around mac and if MS has improved this time, i'll stick with them. The only thing worse than bad interaction is mindless dogmatism (and hype).
