Mentorship is one of the most critical components when starting an opportunity. The first time around I got none, fell flat on my face. Once I got the right mentoring my business changed. Do the research yes on the business , but do not forgot to research mentors.

Here Is A Video I did on how to find the right mentor. I think it will give those seeking a mentor some good points to look for to protect themselves. Take this outline and ask questions and then ask more questions to make sure you find the mentor for you.
1.31 minutes--- into the presentation, fast forward if need be this should really help. as well as this great post

@Tim: No matter what you still have to learn on the go - that's part of the process and an important one, but having some guiding hands to help you is critical.

@Jonathan: Innovation is a "big" word. The best product doesn't always win, and right now it's definitely not about the best product - it's about the best business model, sales & marketing focus, execution, customer service. Innovation wins over the long term, but even still there are examples of crappier products dominating because of the "business" side of things.

@Stuart: Mentors have to be able to actively help, not just provide generic advice. Mentors will generally have much more experience -- and be able to guide entrepreneurs through things they've never had to do (firing people might be a good example of that.)

I completely agree with the sentiment of what you wrote. I would add one additional thought though. Founders need mentors for sure, and I don't think it matters whether they are first time founders or serial entrepreneurs. But the key is that they need mentors who have comparable experience. For example they need a mentor who has had to fire people themselves or a person that has grappled with transforming a company that was initially product centric into a company that needs to be sales centric. Sometimes this will exclude many from the VC community who might promise mentorship but are not the right people to provide it

What is sleep? In April my daughter will be 4, and my son will be 18 months. I am still trying to get the 18 month old to stop nursing, so just letting him cry at night is so much fun because of course all I do is lay there awake. Then of course I eventually give in. But I don’t think I will ever get a good night sleep until the kids are grown and out of the house. Once they are in bed there is that long stretch of good sleep they get from about 8pm-2am but hey I am up til 11 or so trying to clean up the mess from the rest of the day. Oh well I guess it’s all worth it in the end. You never realize how lucky you were when you did get a full nights sleep until it’s too late.

There are signs of improvement out there. Did you see the announcement of Microsoft's BizSpark program (hint: I blogged about it)? One of the aspects of this program is to set up a mentoring relationship between sponsors and startups. I know there's no love lost on Microsoft in some circles, but I think this is a great move on their part.

Ben, excellent content as usual without any fluff.

We tried to raise capital two years ago and in all honesty got overwhelmed with the process and the time investment it required. It seemed we either grow our practice or spend the time to raise money to grow our business. The more VS I spoke with, i discovered that raising capital for a consulting firm is more difficult than raising capital for a software company.

I am not sure if the timing is right now but I am thinking of taking a 2nd look at raising capital.

Megin,You are right, I misspoke. I didn’t mean to give off the impression that it was an absolute. Sure, there are some spouses that maintain a very well-balanced relationship. I take no issue with that. It’s the un-balanced parenting teams that I’m speaking to.My wife and I, we split the kid-handling pretty well. She’s incredibly cool during the moments when I say, “Listen, I’ve had a long day with the kids, can you deal with whatever it is that they are setting on fire?” I dig that about her. She never shrugs it off or attempts to shirk in any way. This is good.

Experience can be a very very good thing. It can also be bad if it includes habits that are not wanted. Someone who is lacking experience can be trained with time and usually creates a stronger employer-employee bond because they know that you are sincerely interested in their development./people/8d172b0be804c66c1a918700b06e8202/

You don't want know-it-alls telling you what to do if they haven't themselves taken a risk. There has to be some risk or it's not worth doing and everyone else would be.

First, you have more flexibility. You don't have a family or many responsibilities. Failure is something that impacts just you.

Secondly, as Neerav, a young entrepreneur explains, you can only win. Either you fail and learn a valuable lesson, increasing your chances of getting a normal job, or you succeed and make good $.

All good. Finally, you have a better understanding of the technology and current trends than many older people might./people/97bdd9c6e46d8096f610da7f017a1149/

The more important thing is that we have to TAKE ACTION.
Most of us live within our comfort zone and we are afraid to take our next steps to build our business. Also, persistence is very important too. If we don't persist, it's hard to success!/people/7a83c4004318507c606d0495bb5ff810/

Listening to some negatives is a good thing. Because the entrepreneurial adrenaline can often cloud your judgement. But picking them is key.

You don't want know-it-alls telling you what to do if they haven't themselves taken a risk. There has to be some risk or it's not worth doing and everyone else would be.

I failed spectacularly. I've since found success. And mentors are the key. It is incredibly astute what you're doing by bringing in the experience as and when you need it./people/062649866ef34e2e57556b41036cd708/
