<content>I was very late to the party as regards 24 - I never watched it while it was airing on TV here. But I bought the first season on DVD 2 years ago and, like you, couldn't stop watching it once I started. I very quickly went through the first 5 seasons. So 24 is still my all-time top TV program, heart-pounding stuff all the way.

I was nearly ready to give up on Lost myself after the first 4 episodes of last season. It was just getting dull. However, this season has brought great rewards for those who stuck with it - each episode has been excellent, almost reaching 24 level consistency of quality IMHO. What's really made it great this season is that they've dropped the flashbacks in favor of flashforwards which has give a totally new dimension to the mystery element.</content>

<content>I think he's off the mark then. I had a two week trial of the Asus EeePC and it was without doubt the single most exciting new piece of technology I've played with in years. It's difficult to understand until you've used it for a while but the EeePC hits a bullseye on the sweetspot between size, price and power. In particular the size makes it an incredibly portable device, an order of magnitude more so than most laptops. I ended up taking and using the EeePC in places I'd never take or use my Dell laptop, including the breakfast table and bedside locker.

My enthusiasm for the device rubbed off on the headmaster of Gaelscoil O'Doghair in Co. Limerick, widely recognized as Ireland's most technologically advance primary school. They put in an order for 15 'pilot' units but could only get 6 due to the backlog on orders. Other educators I know, such as John Jennings at Tipperary Institute, will also testify that the EeePC is a truly groundbreaking computer.</content>

Can you explain further please to this dumbo who's working on a project for his brother to audit his electricity usage. We were thinking of purchasing a device like "The Owl" to monitor usage off the meter but were disappointed to learn that the device will only tell you what you're consuming at the moment and doesn't allow you to download data to a PC for analysis. Do you know of any better device? Or can you explain how to work out useful stats per day from the bill?</content>

<content>I was very dubious about dual monitor setups until recently when a local supermarket had a special offer on 19" LCDs and it prompted me to ask the question of my friends on Jaiku as to whether a second monitor was really worthwhile. The answer was a resounding yes. So I took an old CRT out of cold storage and attached it to my laptop, which has always supported dual screens. I've been trialling this setup for a few weeks now and I have to say I'd find it very difficult to go back to single screen.

I use the second monitor as... a monitor. In the true sense. I monitor the live web - Twitter and Jaiku via Google Talk IM. Being able to glance over to my right at that monitor as messages come in instead of task switching on my primary screen saves me a huge amount of time, not just in task switching but in *context* switching. It's hard to describe the difference but when glancing briefly at the peripheral screen I don't feel like I'm context switching. I'm not taking my attention 100% away from what I was doing and so I find it much easier to keep a train of thought going. The secondary monitor isn't distracting. In fact I've taken to calling it my PAD - Peripheral Attention Display :)</content>

<content>Well said Paul. While I remain an active user of Twitter and Jaiku (social networking lite) I've lost all interest in Facebook (not that I ever used it much to begin with). The only sustainable Social Network longterm, IMHO, is the blogosphere (Call it blogopshere 2.0 if that doesn't make you puke ;-).

It's damn frustrating waiting for the microformats / OpenID / OAuth / whatever-else-is-needed ecosystem to bootstrap but it will eventually I think.</content>

<content>Duncan, I'm really surprised that you haven't seen that the writing has been on the wall for a long time. Last January I started writing about "Google ReWriter" -

".... blog posting, commenting and social bookmarking are various forms of the same thing - annotation.... we must shake off the page-centric mindset. The 'Wide Web was about reading pages, the Live Web is about annotating microchunks (e.g. permalinks). While we tend to categorize our annotation according to the point of submission, each form is essentially the same. Whether to your own blog, someone else's blog or a third party note-taking site it's the same mechanism. Different context but same mechanism. What sense does it make that I have to open my Performancing plug-in to blog, visit a blogger's web page to comment and invoke a del.icio.us pop-up to take a note? None! I should be able to perform each annotation from within my aggregator - a single unified interface to the Live Web. And I'm betting that's exactly what Google ReWriter will become."

I followed up in February -

".... how will we publish these microformatted comments? With our Google ReWriters (or other 2nd generationaggregator/annotators). We can already use Google Reader to annotate (tag) posts, just press 'T'. A new version will allow us to comment, just press 'C'. These comments will be microformatted and tossed back into our uniFeeds, there to be scanned and recombined back into the discussion flow by any microformat aware aggregator."

Not meaning to blow my own trumpet but it's been very obvious to many that this was on the cards. And I'm horrified that you should ask Google to put the genie back in the bottle.</content>

<content>Thanks for the plug of Grazr Chris (I'm an advisor to the company). You asked about other interesting uses of OPML and I think one of the best I've seen comes from Marjolein Hoekstra who built a marketing search engine called the Power 150 -

http://www.cleverclogs.org/2007/02/rssenabled_mark.html

Admittedly she used some Grazr specific functionality but the ingenious mashup powerfully demonstrates the remarkable versatility of OPML, RSS and 'small pieces, loosely joined'.</content>

<content>David Crellen, that's a mindblowing idea! Kind of like augmented tamagotchi. I know that description will horrify some people but what I mean is that your idea can make 'sponsorship' of a child so much more real and tangible that it currently is. Which can only be a good thing IMHO. Wow, amazing food for thought.</content>

<content>Very little to add to Jason and Matt's astute observations. Personally all I need is a chair, desk, power, wifi and copious amounts of coffee. Throw in my laptop, mobile phone and headset and that's my office.

A choice between open plan and more private walled off areas would be good as I could see myself choosing between both according to my work load and tasks. A cosy cafe suitable for networking as, of course that's a major part of it all.

On the admin side I guess there should be a wiki, shared calendar or even a good old-fashioned physical notice board for announcements to the other people in the building about what coworkers will be visiting so that they can introduce themselves and go for a coffee.

As regards payment an hourly charge would be ideal from my point of view as I'd probably be paying short term visits most of the time. But from the point of view of cowork location twinning and playing host to international coworkers there should also be weekly 'packages' available.</content>

<content>Paul, that's an excellent point - there's definitely a much more local feel to twittering (for me at least) than blogging. In fact I found it very interesting to hear some of the people in the coworking community looking for ways to 'tune into' geographically based coworkers when they travel. I think when Twitter introduces groups it will provide an ideal means of facilitating that. I expect we'll initially see an 'Irish' group on Twitter and then more local ones as the number of users goes up - Waterford, the People's Republic of Cork, etc ;-)</content>

Good list Damien, I was only aware of Mary's and Karlin's blogs previously. Mary's is a great blog and working its way quickly into my expert list. Karlin's *was* a great blog and would have been top of my list except it's been March since she posted to it (has she moved somewhere?).

Remember I said - "I don’t know Irish female experts who blog in the areas that I’m interested in." - and on a cursory glance it looks like some of these don't blog in areas of my interest. So, I still not might be adding them to *my* experts list, simply because I don't feel qualified to judge anyone an expert in an area I don't have a good understanding of myself. That, naturally, is not to say that they aren't experts or that they won't make your Expert List and the list's of others. BTW girls, I'm subscribed to dozens of male bloggers who won't make my Experts List!

Anyway, good to have some new Irish subs.</content>

This is one of the deceptive things about Grazr. It looks like a widget at first glance but by clicking on the Launch button at top right it launches into a full size window, with a variety of control buttons, views and an address bar. This transforms it into something comparable to a full feed aggregator, although the philosphy of feed grazing is different to that of feed aggregating. A grazer is intended more for glancing at a large dynamic collections of feeds without subscribing.

Disclosure: I'm on the advisory board to Grazr Corp.</content>
