Well, I'm flattered to be included in Paul's list - but of course, there are many other german (online) media blogs that are worth reading. Here are some of my favourites:

Medienspiegel - mandatory if you're a journalist in Switzerland.

Medienlese - covering mostly Swiss and German online media.

Stefan Niggemeier - Niggemeier is one of the founders of the media watchblog Bildblog, this is his personal blog.

Indiskretion Ehrensache - Thomas Knüwer, who is also a reporter for the newspaper Handelsblatt, is one of the few German print journalists who also blogs.

Beobachtungen zur Medienkonvergenz - An irregularly updated, but truly excellent Swiss blog about social media and technology convergence.

I'm sure I'm forgetting some, but it's a start...

I completely agree with Mark - link within the story whenever you can. The only links I'd put at the end of the story are links to related stories.

The website of the Swiss newspaper I used to work for usually does not link within the story. There was, however, no clear policy when I worked there - if you wanted, you could use in-text links.

The conclusion: "Twitter has specific strengths that make it an asset in covering certain types of stories -- where immediate micro-information is very relevant to the readers -- while in other cases, it might not be worth taking the time to add it to your coverage arsenal."

Great post, Paul! I like your distinction between pulling, pushing and passing on - it instantly brings order to the online distribution chaos.

Maybe a word about Twitter: One of the reasons why I think Twitter could become an important tool for online journalism is that it can be used as a distribution tool in all three categories.

First, for picking up: News sites should build their own Twitter channels where they distribute news. And again, the same thing that you said about RSS and E-Mail is true: Different technologies require different uses. It's not enough for the sites to just stream their RSS feed into a Twitter channel. But if they do it right, they can possibly reach a bigger audience with little effort.

Second, tuning in: Twitter actually is a sort of asynchronous chat - so why not use it that way? Journalists can ask readers for questions for an upcoming interview (< a href="http://blog.handelsblatt.de/indiskretion/">Thomas Knuewer in Germany has done it a few times, apparently it worked well) or even have entire conversations with guests on Twitter, giving readers the possibility to participate.

And finally, passing on: Of course, Twitter is a also a great recommendation tool; I discover a lot of great content from tweets. If journalists become part of the online community, blogging, commenting and twittering, chances are that they are not only increasing traffic to their content, but that they also stumble upon a lot of interesting stuff.
