<content>You are so right -- they are functional, but boring. And I don't really understand it. They are supposed to be models for the rest of us, but they all look like generic-brand magazines.

I love your examples of fun blog design, though they all seem to have been done by 'professionals' -- that is, folks with more skill than I have. I think they're great, but beyond emulation, for me.

It is a tough balance, I think; especially when one is told, again and again, that 'minimalist' is the way to go. Which I think it is, for many sites. But what if you just aren't the minimalist sort, but still want your blog to be functional?

I like your blog, and the design -- but I do have a hard time with the light text on dark background (you do better than many, though) -- easily resolved by reading you mostly by feed.

I don't forget what it looks like here, though, and the design is certainly part of the attraction.</content>

<content>I had never heard of the acronym HTML code before -- that will come in handy (already has, today) -- thanks!

I'm thinking about the underlined links. I use color -- but had not thought about color blind readers. I do a lot of linking-out, and all that underlining seems visually cluttered to me.

But, back to the thinking cap...

And to the Dig button -- which I've never used until you &amp; Skellie came along.</content>

<content>I probably lean a bit toward the perfectionist side on my blogs, but I would encourage readers to be tolerant. One of the pleasures of blogs is the opportunity to read folks who may not be precisely articulate in English, either because it's not their first language, or they are education or learning disabled. But there are gems out there, misspelled and incorrect though they may be.

Re: editing -- I usually make a note, or use the strike-out, if I'm making a substantial change to a post. But if the change is made for spelling, grammar, or clarity -- I just sneak in and do it. I think the issue is honesty and transparency with your readers, so that should be the measure.</content>

<content>Hi Molly -- I'm not in your business, so I can't speak to this professionally -- and I've been redoing my sites, so I understand the impulse.

I also know that, for me, part of that impulse is an attempt to both reconnect with, and avoid, making the content that is the real heart of the site.

If you want to play, but like what you have -- maybe take some of the above 'tweaking' suggestions, and then do that fancy thing I see elsewhere (but haven't the skill to do myself) where a site offers a variety of designs?

Then you can still have your main 'branded' design, but offer some fun &amp; challenge for your readers and yourself.

Just a word, too -- what you have transcends your 'brand' -- I read you for awhile before I realized you had written the book on my shelf -- I read *you* -- and you are not a brand.</content>

I would love a post from you for Blogging Blog|Tips, Tools &amp; Toys for the Personal Blogger.

Most meta-blogs are designed for the business or professional blogger, but this one is for personal bloggers who blog for fun, not money.

I bet you could could come up with a topic you would enjoy writing for that audience.

This blog is low-ranked in Technorati, and is a low-traffic blog at present -- but it has about 50 subscribers, and comes up high (sometimes first) on searches for blog posts about blogging.</content>

<content>OK, just because I like this topic -- why doesn't the sidebar count as content?

On my blog, of course, part of my goal is to send folks to other places they might like, and that is not usually a priority for problogs. But even then -- isn't the sidebar either links to more of the blogger's content, or other related/interesting places?

&amp; yes, I have fairly loyal readers, that's true. They like the content -- and at least some of them like the sidebar, the design (though that keeps changing.)

Since I do like sidebars, I still have a hard time grasping that some find it 'offputting' -- it feels like bias to me, rather than thoughtfulness -- you know, they've heard long sidebars are bad, so they must be bad.

?

Actually, I'd be very interested in your blogroll, or bloglines, or whatever -- because your content interests me, I expect to be interested in what interests you.</content>

<content>"Few things look worse than a sidebar overextending the content area."

Why?

Since many folks come in on a page/post, rather than the main page, this is sometimes unavoidable anyway.

I, for some old-timer reason, prefer balance -- I like the main column and the sidebar to be approximately the same length.

But I also like exploratory sidebars, sidebars that tell me more about the blogger (of course, I'm a fan of personal blogs.)

OK, I'm still struggling with all this minimalism hoo-ha. I understand the reasoning for having a quick-loading page. That makes sense to me.

I don't understand the reasoning behind 'nothing that's not utilitarian' -- I mean, the web is a visual experience, is it not? Why should it not be beautiful?

Feel free to disagree. Feel free to tell me what to take off the sidebar.

I might even do it. Or I might not.

Re: 2 or 3 columns -- I tried three, but it just didn't 'feel' right for my personal blog (though I do use it on &lt;a href="http://www.bloggingblog.org"&gt;Blogging Blog&lt;/a&gt;. And my main column is narrow because I post poems (don't cringe; I'm a pretty good poet) and they canlook lost in a wide (or fluid) column.

So I think it depends on what you do.</content>

I bet most of us blog because we love to write, or we have a passion we want to share, or we think better 'out loud', or we enjoy the contact with other folks who are far away but share some segment of the planet we care about --

So, to reinforce some previous points: tech should be about the ends, not the means. The means should be effortless and as invisible as possible.

I might suggest that Microsoft and other companies solicit the assistance of women bloggers in assessing and designing their products; especially women bloggers who are not geeks. We are likely to be tech-friendly, but not so savvy that our input would be more of the same.</content>
