I'm going to have to sit on this one for a while and think it over. I'm generally for the Creative Commons licensing because it gives additional options to the photographer. Though you make a valid point that it's not well understood by many photographers. I've also found that it's not well understood by many publishers, especially bloggers.

Wow Neil, you've really put together a great resource on the subject! I'm a big fan of the extension tube as an introductory method of macro photography. But even after you "graduate" to more sophisticated equipment, they're still worth hanging onto. On several occasions, I've coupled my extension tube to my macro lens -- great for those really small subjects.

Great stuff Martin; really inspiring thoughts. I think getting dragged down is something all photographers have to deal with from time to time. It's such a creative medium I feel like I get tapped out occasionally. But in the end, as you've stated, it's all about your perspective and how you choose to look at things.

I think these tips apply to more than photography too. For me, blogging is much the same. One week I'm on fire, the next week I can't write four words without giving up in disgust.

It seems like the ups and downs are a necessary part of many artistic mediums.

hmm... You've got me flicking back and forth between two of my photos. I can't decide!!!

OK, I'll go with my "<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/brianauer/1471731080/">Zig Zag</a>" photo.

I chose this one because I like the odd symmetry and how well the textures turned out. It's an interesting one to look at, because it appears different when you're close to it versus far away from it. When you're close, you see the texture and the subtle tone gradients. When you're far away, you see the bigger patterns and symmetry. And if you blur your eyes, you see another set of patterns an lines. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

You know... I would, but I have a fear of film. I wish there was a digital equivalent of this or the Lomo. My kid's Fisher-Price camera comes pretty close, but the sensor is too itty-bitty. I'd love to see somebody do a hack on one of these cameras to Frankenstein it together with maybe an old P&S or something. I've seen a hack for a Lecia M8, but that's not really cheap to do.

So if I weren't so scared of film, I'd be all over this.

The "Bad neighborhood" thing is pretty interesting. I checked a couple of my pages, and I found that it marked a lot of links as questionable due to the words in that link. All the items were relevant and decent links, but when they include words like "se*y" "p*rn" "gam*ling" "ls*" "pok*r" "a*s" etc. (I don't want to dirty up your page), they show up as questionable. So I'm thinking that from an SEO standpoint, it's better to use family safe words in your titles and URLs.

I have a feeling you're not the only one. I keep a "to do" pile of images, and it's approaching 400. Yet I still don't feel an urgent rush to get them all done -- a lot of them fall out over time as I come to the realization that not everything I shoot is worth spending more time processing.

Great blog, by the way -- it's nice to see articles that don't talk about Canon and Nikon all day long.

I love my 7D. I'm glad that Sony is stepping it up -- I was a little disappointed when the a100 launched. Not that it's a bad camera, but in many aspects it was a step backwards from the 7D. This a700 looks a little more enticing, but I'm still not fully impressed. I think I'll have to wait it out until their next model arrives (as long as my 7D keeps trucking). I want two control dials on the top of the camera, no preset shooting modes (just give me P, A, S, M, and some programmable spots)... basically, I want the same controls on the 7D, and maybe a few more. Oh well, at least they put both wheels back on the grip.

So here's looking forward to the a900? a... whatever the next one after the 700 will be. I heard some kind of rumor that it will have a 1.25X crop factor with the option to switch down to 1.5 when using 1.5X lenses. That would be pretty slick, but they still need to work on the controls. And if the next one has a pop-up flash, I'm going to sell all my stuff and buy a Canon. They really need to market to the serious crowd with their third release.

The stats picture is too funny. I've been looking at the same thing for the last two days straight. Somehow my article made it into the buzz page on StumbleUpon, and the traffic just kept on coming at an ever increasing rate. I hadn't realized the true power of the StumbleUpon community until this happened. I mean, I've been Stumbled before (and I'm also a very active user), but I've never seen 5000 visits within 24 hours from them.

Oh yes, and props to Mr. Darren Rowse for "Discovering" the article and starting the domino effect. This reminds me... I need to shoot that guy an email and thank him again.

Great article here. As a Stumbler, I sure don't mind seeing a thank you or two every once in a while -- and it HAS actually happened a few times.

Interesting write-up -- I'd never thought about the downsides of being a popular social media user. I've only been using the social sites (mostly just digg, StumbleUpon, and del.icio.us) for a short time now, and my primary reason for using them is to share other people's work. The sites also give me a good way to keep track of all my new findings so I can reference them when it's time to link out from my blog (again, more sharing). I really can't see myself becoming a top user on any of the sites -- it sounds like I don't have enough time on my hands.

I'm way up to 1,347 -- but then again, I've really just started using the site in the last month or so. I started uploading photos back in April, but I didn't really make any efforts to get involved with anything -- they just kind of sat there. Within the last month I've really started becoming more involved, so we'll see how things improve. Also, one of my photos accounts for 885 of the views because it was used (under the creative commons) at the top of an article that hit the front page of digg.

Much of the recent traffic to my photos is being driven from my blog because I started including a link from my photo posts (should have been doing that a long time ago). Other than that, I have no idea where people come from -- I don't really post to any groups or participate in a lot of discussions (which I plan on doing in the near future). My guess is that some people arrive via Flickr searches.

I just did my own little poll with my wife and her friend. The friend has almost no debt and is very financially mindful. My wife is a shop-aholic and will spend money on herself every chance she gets.

The mindful friend said $200, while my wife said $100. This was the opposite of my expectations. So basically, it turns out that my wife feels guilty about spending what she does, but she does it anyways.

For myself, I feel bad about spending more than $30 or so on myself -- even if it's for things that I need, like work clothes and such.

Well shucks. I guess what I meant to say was that it passed too quickly to get any MORE good shots. That was really the only one worth salvaging. The rest of the shots didn't have any distinct bolts in them, just some lit up clouds.

I'm guilty of all but number 1, especially the ISO thing and the sensor cleaning bit. I'm getting better about formatting my cards though. Also, I rarely forget my 2nd battery, but I sometimes forget to charge it -- talk about killing a day of shooting.
