<content>@Salva - Thanks for your message. You might be right - I've not looked into it in detail.

I got the structure from MSDN here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa921533.aspx which says that the cell id is a DWORD. So I represented it as a uint, as recommended in MSDN here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms912059.aspx

So there wasn't a lot of thought that went into it. Do you think a different data type would have been more appropriate?</content>

<content>I admit that it is overpriced, but I think that can be largely explained away as an "Early Adopter Tax" - this isn't really into retail yet, so until they get production up and running fully, it was always gonna cost a bit more.

I love it - it goes with me everywhere now, and I get a lot of use out of it. It might be more pricey than something like the EEE PC, but it has a few benefits over it, too:

Battery life - working online, I can get a couple of hours out of the EEE PC's battery. Running by itself, I've had the Redfly going for 12 or 13 hours before needing a charge. Obviously, working online, my phone's battery wont last that long, and using the Redfly to keep the phone's battery up does knock it's battery life - but even then I can get 8 or so hours out of it.
The ability to get a full days work between charges is a massive difference between this and UMPCs like the EEE.

Bootup - Full-fledged operating systems like the Xandros Linux on my EEE PC take a while to boot. The Redfly's "boot" (the time to connect to the Windows Mobile PDA) is a few seconds. So it makes it practical for quick tasks in a way that the EEE PC (or those like it) just isn't.
While I know I can leave the EEE PC in standby to make bootup quicker, doing that and leaving it in my bag means you pay a big price in battery life, plus it gets pretty hot! I can't leave the EEE PC on in standby all day, and expect it to still have any battery life left by the end of the day.

These two alone justify adding an extra £100 to the price for me.

The price you pay is in power - I can't do everything I might want to do on a smartphone. But I can do enough that it's still worth it.</content>

<content>It's a bit heavier than the EEE PC. I'm guessing this is because the space that would otherwise be taken up by processor, memory, storage, graphics chip, et al. is free to make the big 8 hour battery.

I don't mind too much... given the choice between light as EEE PC with a flat battery in a few hours, or something slightly heavier that will run all day, I'll take this.</content>

<content>Yeah, I was surprised that it was so hard to find packages for using MySQL in SlugOS.

I'm fairly new to the slug, so perhaps I'm not looking in the right places?

I've been looking in:
- SlugOS ipkg repositories - as configured as part of the SlugOS/LE install
- &lt;a href="http://ipkgfind.nslu2-linux.org/"&gt;ipkgfind&lt;/a&gt; to search Optware packages
- Google - as a general catch-all

For all of the modules I had to fight with, such as ccache or perl-module-digest-sha1, I couldn't find any that would work on SlugOS/LE. Perhaps it's an endian-ness thing? I don't know.

Do you know of any other places to look for NSLU2 packages?</content>

I'm not familiar with the Shadow - but the fact that you said "Home screen" instead of "Today screen" suggests that it is a WM Standard (rather than Professional) device. Is this right?

Because this is a Today screen plugin, which will only work on devices with a touchscreen (e.g. WM 6 Professional).

Sorry for the confusion</content>

- you have a touchscreen WM5/WM6 PDA?
- you installed the CAB to main memory and not a storage card?
- you went to the Items tab of the Today Screen applet in Settings after installing the CAB?

<content>Apologies for the shamless pimping, but I've also written something like this which people may find useful?

Instead of a separate application, I wrote it as an extension to the Internet Explorer browser for Windows Mobile - an extra menu option that turns the current URL you are looking at into a TinyURL.

http://dalelane.co.uk/page.php?id=41

ceSnipURL has the benefit that you can edit the long URL before getting it shortened. My extension has the benefit that you don't need to open a new app.

To be honest, I think I'll end up using both :-)</content>

Afraid not. The nature of trying to extend the Pocket Internet Explorer menus makes this code quite platform-specific. I really wrote it for myself - so it will work on PDA's like my own (that is to say, touchscreen devices running Windows Mobile 5 or 6).
The code is shared, so if anyone wanted to port it to a different browser or platform, that might help get them started.</content>

        <content>@Tomsoft

I was toying with the idea of hacking together something like this for my personal use: something that gets my GPS coordinates and stores it with the GSM Cell ID, repeating this periodically.

I'm curious about the distribution of GSM cells in my area, and thought it might be interesting to see what data this would collect if I left it running for a few weeks.

Owen's comment above - that cell ids are not necessarily fixed - gives me pause about wider use of this.

I like the idea of an open cellid database, but the scale of the task to collect this information seems somewhat daunting. The number of people who might be willing to run such an app to collect this data with no immediate benefit (in fact, actually at some cost considering the battery life implications) seems to be somewhat limited. I wonder whether it will be possible to collect cell locations fast enough to maintain up-to-date relevant data?

I'm not sure...

That said, if I do write something that could collect this sort of stuff, I'd be happy to share it with you. And I'll be watching with interest to see how your project develops - good luck!</content>
