Sarah, I also disagree with you and I am a lawyer. The terms of use didn't say Facebook owned users' content but its license provisions were very broad and pretty much allowed Facebook the right to do whatever it wanted with users' content as well as content which had the misfortune of being linked to from Facebook or using a Facebook "share" link, quite irrespective of the content owner's wishes or whether the license was even competent.

This controversy was not "cooked up" by the Consumerist blog. There were very good reasons to be concerned about those terms of use and while Facebook did the right thing pulling them, the restored terms of use are still not that great. At the same time Facebook has committed to revamping their terms of use so we'll have to wait and see whether the new terms will reflect Facebook's stated intentions.

Thanks for the link and for your post. I would be very concerned if I was a creative professional uploading my content to Facebook or linking to it from Facebook and I would be loathe to publish my content on any site that does not respect my licensing choices or my right to control my content and data.

There are differing opinions about whether Hasbro has a valid claim against Scrabulous for copyright/trademark/patent infringement. I bookmarked a couple sites I found which seem to have a halfway decent argument at http://delicious.com/pejrm/scrabulous. Wendy Seltzer's post takes a pretty methodical look at the possible arguments Hasbro may use and it isn't so clear they even have a valid claim.

Oh, I think I need to apologise for the gunshot sounding noise you heard in the podcast. I think that was me barging into the hotel room and the door closing while Simon was on the call. Sorry about that!

Sue, talks at 27 Dinners have been great. Not all of them, but some have been. If the standard is raised and speakers are required to really present something good, the talks about turn a social dinner thing into something easily worth the time and Primi cost.

Thanks SheeBee. I don't see myself giving up text for video but I do like the opportunities that video presents. I am growing more and more partial to Seesmic given my current setup. It would be fun to do more video stuff but there is the challenge you touched on - sufficient bandwidth to make video more appealing to more people. Then again, that is another reason Seesmic is a good option. It doesn't seem to be as bandwidth intensive.

There is no denying that Twitter is immensely popular and a great number of people's networks are using Twitter. What I just don't understand is why this continues to be the case with Twitter's clear faults. Virtually every set of updates includes a complaint about Twitter's instability or some other failure and yet people cling to it.

I don't buy the argument that people don't want to monitor yet another service or that everyone is using Twitter so why change? Twitter wasn't always around and probably won't always be around. People will move to a new service. Granted it is a fantastic service and provides a simple way to publish short posts and even engage each other in unthreaded and difficult to track conversations but Jaiku was there first and FriendFeed and Pulse can do pretty much the same thing. Given the incentive Twhirl would support Pulse too.

Anyway, this rant is probably more akin to me shouting into a strong wind. It isn't going to change the wind's direction and nobody will really hear me anyway. Just thought I'd get it out there anyway. At some point in the future the trend will shift away from Twitter. It is the way Web services work. It is just a question of when and where it all goes.

Hi Molly

Thanks for your post and for the really interesting info about the Sephardic Jews. I didn't know much about them before reading your post (also Ashkenazi myself). There was a site up a little while ago which was anti-semitic and the problem is that it got a lot of traffic because people sent around petitions with the link so everyone who got the petition visited the site and it only aggravated the situation.

I understand that there are negative associations with the term "Jew". I actually appreciate that there is a cautionary for people not familiar with which sites are anti-semitic and which are legit. It shows that Google is sensitive to the issue. Like you I am not very religious but I appreciate my connection to my culture and I am increasingly more appreciative of its many facets. I am proud of that part of me and feel no desire to conceal it. It is part of who I am.

I also appreciate your post and you speaking out on this issue.
