Last year I believe CABE was the same weekend as CUE but it’s definitely worth going from what I’ve heard. I’m not sure if I’m going to CUE next year. Reply:

I agree that children might not understand, however if you sat with them to answer their questions and even posed questions to them about what they are seeing you might find a great opportunity for discourse. Children unfortunately have to be exposed to these kinds of attitudes so they can learn what they are and how to respond to them. I will admit that sometimes I am hard pressed to figure out what to say, and unless I see an opportunity to further express my opinions ( one thousand characters is often not nearly enough to say all there is to say) by engaging them I don’t.When my children were young we would watch something on tv, I can’t even give you an example right now, but I bring it up to tell you that often times we didn’t finish watching the show because we had gotten into a discussion about something in the show that sparked a wonderful exchange between us. We all learned so much about ourselves, I had a chance to teach them, and they had a chance to teach me. I think you will find out a lot about your children, what they already think, what you have already taught them that you may not even realize they have learned.

Thank you so much for sharing. I went back and looked at the Shriner comments, and there is an interesting thing happening. If you look at the comments, there are a fair number decrying what others are posting. More importantly, the Bee has a rating system (thumbs up or down) for comments, and the positives are far outpacing the negatives. I’m thinking that post ranking might be an idea with the comments, and making a practice of posting something positive, and giving a thumbs up to posts that are constructive, even if you disagree with their point. That would help drown out the trolls a bit.I think you’re right about the comments everywhere. It’s a phenomena that’s been around since BBS chats/forums and the only way I know of to de-troll a place is flood it with the positive and ignore them.My specific concern is still sending my 9, 10, and 11 year olds to a site where mud is being slung.<a href="http://www.myspace.com/alwaysrememberchriscejas" rel="external nofollow" >Pat D</a> Reply:

I comment regularly on the Sacramento Bee Web site and have done for over six years. I mainly weigh in on the CPS articles but have read and commented other articles as well. I am usually pretty annoyed by these mean spirited commenters who spew their hate on a regular basis, but I know you can never really change their minds. I wonder sometimes if they are as harsh in every day life as they seem to be when they write the trash and nastiness at the Bee. Are they the ones who pull out in front of us even though we are the last car coming down the road, the ones who stand in front of you in the store so you can’t get through the aisle to the bread, the ones who flip you off as they roar past on the freeway because you are already doing ten miles over the speed limit but that’s too slow for them? I don’t know but I bet they are. To be fair I have discovered this kind of thinking and behavior happens on other comment sites at other papers around the country as well which says nasty is everywhere. Meanness is not confined to Sacramento, to California and I figure not even to the United States. Having said that it still saddens me that there is so much bigotry, hate and selfishness in the hearts of people. But we can take solace in the fact that there is also caring, warmth and love in some of the comments and commenters. We can only hope that those who hate will learn better but I am not sure it will be any time soon. Reply:

I’m actually not sure what your issue with this happends to be. Is it that you have saw some studies that showed that the child is harmed in some way by starting this way because personally being a stay at home mom. I am more then capable of teaching my child what she needs to know in kinder. I however am not keeping her back but toyed with the idea because I am not really ready to let my 4 year old go. I want her to go to school because she is getting bored at home and preschool is expensive. She knows and recognizes her alphabets she knows numbers til 50 we have practice phonectics and she has about 20 site words as well sounding out words begining stages of actual reading she is learning things her 1st grader cousin will learn we she starts school. hence my excitement for a freeeee montesorri school

Wow, Alice! I’m immensely embarrassed by your organization, not to mention your clarity of focus. I tend to slap everything I _might_ attend at NECC into my planner and use it as a sort of itinerary, which of course results in a planner so populated with those little yellow shields with exclamation points that it is most unsightly. That’s the fun of NECC, for me, is spending at least three days of at-the-moment choice, punctuated by required attendance at my own presentations I’ll see you at Edubloggercon (for which I’m typically double-booked)! and around at the SL Playground, I hope! As a student, I have been spending much time in the classroom discussing, observing and practicing teaching. This fall we spent a considerable amount of time reflecting on classroom management and how to start the year off right – which is amazingly different for every teacher. We also have been studying how to incorporate technology into the classroom and use it to form the much needed professional community so that we can keep growing ourselves through reflection. Thank you for your thoughtful advice!

I have never given money to causes. Causes have given me very little in life, except grief. You sure have a busy travel schedule set up for yourself this summer!Me, I’m going on multiple, spontaneous trips to the nursery down the hallway from the master bedroom in my house. My wife and I have crafted a series of posters that will hang on a bi-weekly basis on the door of the nursery. Every other week, it’ll ‘feel’ like (’read’ like) we’ve entered a new, nursery-inspired locale.A sampler:

Part of why I put that statement up was for my students. I explained to them what I was doing, and why I was doing it.

I also tried to keep the statement general, rather than a long list of stuff and base it on my own judgment.

I will update my list of links on Fair Use to include the new ones you provided.

Alice..
Thanks for the kind words:) Since we met at NECC Temple Media Education lab has released the <a href="http://mediaeducationlab.com/code-best-practices-fair-use-media-literacy-education" rel="nofollow">Code of Best Practices in Fair Use for Media Literacy Education </a>. You can <a href="http://mediaeducationlab.com/sites/mediaeducationlab.com/files/CodeofBestPracticesinFairUse.pdf" rel="nofollow"> download a copy </a> of your own. According to the Code of Best Practices in Fair Use for Media Literacy, teachers can:1. make copies of newspaper articles, TV shows, and other copyrighted works and use them and keep them for educational use2. create curriculum materials and scholarship with copyrighted materials embedded3. share, sell and distribute curriculum materials with copyrighted materials embeddedLearners can:4. use copyrighted works in creating new material5. distribute their works digitally if they meet the transformativeness standardFair use requires reasoning and critical thinking. In determining whether a particular use of copyrighted material is a fair use, you must consider the rights of owners as well as your own needs and purposes as a user. Review the principles and limitations identified on pages 10 -14 of the Code. Depending on the particulars of the context and situation, it will be necessary to ask permission, pay a license fee, or claim fair use.It takes practice to gain confidence in applying the fair use reasoning process. There is no one “right” answer in making a fair use determination, which is why the courts have established a “reasonableness standard” which limits the liability of librarians or teachers who make a good-faith judgment that might be judged to be a violation of copyright. No one fair use checklist “fits” a particular case or situation. In some cases, a checklist can actually interfere with reasoning. A checklist can become a substitute or a short-cut for critical thinking. In thinking about fair use, each particular case must be critically examined through a reasoning process. SO if an educator goes through such a process to justify their use as fair use, it would be unlikely that that educator would “get into trouble” for copyright violation.Check out this <a href="http://copyrightconfusion.wikispaces.com" rel="nofollow"> wiki </a> that enables folks to ask questions, post best practices, and find out ways that others are teaching about copyright and fair use. Media Literacy is a CRITICAL skill in our global society. We must teach our kids to be good media consumers and good media producers and this requires critical thinking. To aid in the process, we have developed a a href=”http://copyrightconfusion.wikispaces.com/reasoning”&gt; reasoning tool that can be used to think through that critical thinking process.I hope your readers find some of these links valuable! Thanks for continuing to share this message! Reply:

Sorry Alice I should have expanded my comment. I agreed with you that it is an important post and it is definitely included in the competition. The reason why I said I was glad you mentioned US was that people often get confused by laws that apply to in the US and those that apply in other countries. Then they make bad assumption that they are covered. For example, Australians get so used to hearing about the right to free speech from the media that they assume they are covered by it while in reality we aren’t protected by it and need to be very careful what we say.<a href="http://mizmercer.edublogs.org" rel="external nofollow" >alicemercer</a> Reply:

Sue, I know this may not be the best post for all edubloggers because it is US specific, but this is a big issue here in the states, and is in want of some attention. Your consideration is appreciated!<a href="http://aquaculturepda.edublogs.org/" rel="external nofollow" >Sue Waters</a> Reply:
Sorry Alice I should have expanded my comment. I agreed with you that it is an important post and it is definitely included in the competition. The reason why I said I was glad you mentioned US was that people often get confused by laws that apply to in the US and those that apply in other countries. Then they make bad assumption that they are covered. For example, Australians get so used to hearing about the right to free speech from the media that they assume they are covered by it while in reality we aren’t protected by it and need to be very careful what we say.<a href="http://mizmercer.edublogs.org" rel="external nofollow" >alicemercer</a> Reply:

Alice..
Thanks for the kind words:) Since we met at NECC Temple Media Education lab has released the <a href="http://mediaeducationlab.com/code-best-practices-fair-use-media-literacy-education">Code of Best Practices in Fair Use for Media Literacy Education </a>. You can <a href="http://mediaeducationlab.com/sites/mediaeducationlab.com/files/CodeofBestPracticesinFairUse.pdf"> download a copy </a> of your own. According to the Code of Best Practices in Fair Use for Media Literacy, teachers can:

1. make copies of newspaper articles, TV shows, and other copyrighted works and use them and keep them for educational use

2. create curriculum materials and scholarship with copyrighted materials embedded

3. share, sell and distribute curriculum materials with copyrighted materials embedded

Learners can:

4. use copyrighted works in creating new material

5. distribute their works digitally if they meet the transformativeness standard

Fair use requires reasoning and critical thinking. In determining whether a particular use of copyrighted material is a fair use, you must consider the rights of owners as well as your own needs and purposes as a user. Review the principles and limitations identified on pages 10 -14 of the Code. Depending on the particulars of the context and situation, it will be necessary to ask permission, pay a license fee, or claim fair use.

It takes practice to gain confidence in applying the fair use reasoning process.

SO if an educator goes through such a process to justify their use as fair use, it would be unlikely that that educator would "get into trouble" for copyright violation.

Check out this <a href="http://copyrightconfusion.wikispaces.com"> wiki </a> that enables folks to ask questions, post best practices, and find out ways that others are teaching about copyright and fair use. Media Literacy is a CRITICAL skill in our global society. We must teach our kids to be good media consumers and good media producers and this requires critical thinking. To aid in the process, we have developed a a href="http://copyrightconfusion.wikispaces.com/reasoning"&gt; reasoning tool </a> that can be used to think through that critical thinking process.

I hope your readers find some of these links valuable! Thanks for continuing to share this message!

Reply:

Thanks for the wonderful advice! I am currently studying to be a teacher and have been thoroughly enjoying your blog.

Keep up the good work!
