The problem is we don't enforce the laws in the "real world" either before we start making more. I would like to add to the conversation that I believe that going to school is my kids' profession and job as long as they are in it. Dress codes, and EVEN UNIFORMS are enforced at most places of employment and we don't here much argument against our creativity or personality being stifled. I believe the dress codes that are currently in place at some schools in the district are perhaps at worst doing nothing to improve the situation. I've been to a variety of conferences where the sales people demo'ing their companies products aren't even familiar with all the features they're talking about in front of a group. I've also been in the audience at some Microsoft launch events and the speakers didn't know what I would consider the basics of their beta software. I was a user and had the impression that I knew their presentation better than they did. You're solution isn't very realistic either though. You don't put your "best and brightest" making a high-dollar salary on the front lines answering phones. You have them developing the software and fixing the actual problems. However, you need to hire and then train the right people and put them in the right job. The other insight I can give is that many times the "developers" have ZERO people/social skills to compliment their knowledge of the product. For those illiterate kids, I reinforce my opinion that we should teach them what they "need" to know, which would be how to read and motivate themselves to do what it takes to rise above their current situation and not be held back by those around them. 2.) One of the largest problems I see in education in our society is that we can't really agree as a nation what it means to be educated. If we could do that, maybe moving from school to school wouldn't be quite the issue it is since all schools would be on similar if not the same page for standards and expectations. 3.) For 17 and 18 year olds that are now free of their parents, I would think being educated on what they "need" to know to survive as self-supporting, responsible citizens would be considered a high-priority for education. 4.) If the purpose of education is to teach kids "common sense" and "street sense", we should graduate them in the 5th grade and push them out on the street. I don't think you really think that's the purpose of the school system do you? What I think students "need to learn" from public education is what we've been trying to teach for the past hundreds of years. Reading, comprehension, math, history (so we don't have to repeat it), science (so we understand the world around us), etc. I also believe there is a huge gap in what could be taught in our schools as it would relate to social and basic life skills as well. Sadly these items are no longer taught in homes by parents and handed down.
