DNA - Agree this is outrageous... Gaffney deserves to have the pretentious stuffing slapped out of him. I do think you give papa Regan too much credit. Despite his elevation to sainthood by the US media, he was a tool who was cowed by his right wing intellectuals into an illegal covert war and started the financial deregulation that's responsible for the bank meltdown, the investment scammers like Madoff, etc. Regan never had any particular attachment to upholding the Bill of Rights, nor was a fan of gay rights. Couldn't agree more with your last comment... Extremes aren't helpful. Evolution is a slow process, both for species and behavior. In my own household, we've cut back on meat significantly, now eating only organic, and only when the kids are here. As a family we're discovering a wide variety of alternative meals, and feeling great with the change, lighter and healthier. Repeat "fine" too many times and we lose touch with the fact that sometimes we're not fine, and could use some help from the folks we trust. I'll bet you heard that crap on FOX. I pay less tax (% of income) here than I did in the US, and my family has the best health care in the world, according to the OECD. (The US ranks 37 in the same study.) My kids get a top-flight education in the state system, fully covered tuition right up through university. I'd put an average French high school senior up against most US college upper-classmen in terms of academics, culture, and personal maturity. France isn't perfect, far from it, but voting percentage is much higher than the US, & the average Joe is better informed, I can watch news from nearly every country, including the US. FOX is pathetic propaganda, and if you don't know that it's because that's all you're watching. America is falling further & further behind in every study on productivity & education, because people like you defend the crap that's poisoning your brains. One point related to your evocative description of Venice: it usually goes unsaid, but the "decline", the air of an old city, crumbling nobility, the ghosts in shaded passageways, is absolutely part of the attraction. Parts of Marseilles have the same appeal. There's a tourist segment of weird, artsy, imaginative folks (count me among them) that is charmed and stimulated by the authentic decadence and romance of all this. I'm not suggesting that this can be artificially created, nor preserved, but as a city finds itself in such a point in the cycle, it could be exploited. Venice of course has the Damocles sword of sinking into the lagoon, making the image of decline too close to real permanent destruction. Housing laws and rents will adjust (with an Italian lag) to market demand, but Venice is not going to become "family-friendly" anytime soon. It's worth considering that Venice may no longer have any possibility of becoming a 'normal' city. Demographics, the un-salvageable physical infrastructure, rising waters, etc.; the world is full of city ruins, most got that way for perfectly rational reasons. If I were the Doge, leading the Signoria, I'd forget pretense and turn the entire city into a by-invitation only international artists ghetto. Limit tourism with a selective visa program, sell tours of watching creativity at work in the artists' ateliers & film-makers' studios.

This is a myth that simplifies the American experiment. In fact, what makes this experiment is self-rule so unique is not that it insures the majority, but that it protects minority opinion. That is what makes America potentially great, and that will be the great loss if the experiment fails. One can argue that in post-feudal societies, the majority always rules, not matter how stupid, manipulated, and short-sighted. Fascism is now voted in, not imposed. But the idea to balance democracy with respect to the minority, the underdog, the uninsured, those at greatest risk... that is a noble dream.
