I am a HUGE fan of a two-computer setup: a cheap-but-fast-ish desktop for whatever and future upgradability, and a netbook for mobility.

Brand and operating system are personal preferences, but I've had good luck with Dell (save for the cheap as shit memory they always sell. Buy the minimum then get your own from Crucial!).
Who cares? Most locks don't even have any sort of reimbursement program, and those that do use the same legal fine print.
I buy a lock so it doesn't get stolen in the first place, not because I'm interested in their reimbusement offer should it get stolen.
If I'm trying to put in the claim then the product is already a failure. In that sense the article is totally unimformative for me, because it says nothing about how good the lock itself is.

Well, I did find it informative, and I also know the purpose of the article had nothing to do with how good the lock is. I can get that data in a number of other places. I found it informative to know SPECIFICALLY the legal hoops I would have to jump through in order to take advantage of their heavily-marketed insurance.

While I'm sure Kryptonite has the same lengthy, byzantine requirements, I was glad to see OnGuard's spelled out in detail *before* I let the marketing affect any future decision I make about buying a u-lock.

Sad news. One of the greatest light comedies ever made...due in no small part to her enthusiasm and hard work making Mrs. Slocombe more than just a series of catchphrases and hooks. She was a person...a weird one, but a person.

Mollie Sugden was a brilliant comedienne and I am unanimous in that. :)

Yesterday's ride was so hard for me. Lack of sleep coupled with a terrible decision to drink Red Bull contributed. I was exhausted right away, and it was a total slog to get through all 50 miles. Took a break at 27-ish miles...

and called home...I was considering just heading straight home. My wife said maybe I should try to finish so I can feel what it's like to push past it, or to see if I even could. She was right of course. I drank a whole bottle of water, ate a bar, sat in the shade for ten minutes, undid the seat adjustments that I made the night before that hurt me so freaking much and kept going.

When my wife saw this pic she said "That's not your happy riding face. You always have happy riding face!" ;) At least I made my planned 50. Second time I've done it now. So...hot and miserable, sure. BUT...I did get to see pretty things:

Felt better between 30 and 45 miles than I did at 10. Then something weird happened and pain set in everywhere; arms, hands, legs, left knee, the sensitive man areas, my neck...I actually don't have a lot of memory of the last five miles, I was just trying to get home. Today?

I sorta want to do it again. :) But I won't. Today is recovery ride...20 miles, at a nice and easy pace.

Another interesting side note: I acted like a vehicle for the parts of the ride that were on the road, meaning I took the lane and didn't hug the shoulder, I waited for lights, not crosswalk signals, etc. When I did that? Not a honk or a beep or anyone yelling at me. I tried to act predictably, but like I belonged there (because I do), giving signals, taking the middle lane to go straight at a three-lane "left turn - straight - right turn" intersection and everyone gave me space. When I hug the shoulder, I get buzzed, yelled at, etc. When I demand some space, but act properly, people seem to just accept that I am there and will get out of the way when I damn well can and not a moment earlier.

So that was cool. But the sun was not. and my cyclist's tan is out of freaking control. :)

Sorry. I'm just very very excited. :) Got a new ride today...my first road bike. A 2009 Defy 3:

99% stock as per the site, but the saddle was swapped for a Giant Unity. Fits me like a glove. A butt glove. In fact my butt feels 100% fine and normal. I think this saddle is exactly the right one for me. Lucky happenstance.

The stock tires were swapped for Vittorio Zaffiras, 700 x 28. They barely fit in there, but fit they do.

This bike was returned after 30 days of ownership because the guy liked the Defy geometry but he wanted to upgrade to the Defy 1, so my LBS knocked a hundred off their usual $750 for Defy 3s and I got her for $650. He also threw in some steel pedals as opposed to the plastic/steel cage ones that come with it.

I named her Jasmine. I think she's got a pretty sweet butt:

Took her out for a little mixed MUP/Road ride. 35.5 miles. First thing I noticed was that being up front, on top of the "compact road design" frame felt so very, very much like flying. It was simply incredible. Second thing I noticed was how much faster I could go without putting out extra energy. Which meant that when I really wanted to move, I had energy reserves into which I could tap. Wonderful feeling when the machine and the engine work together like that. I'm so freaking happy with this.

Today's ride was awesome. I can't wait to do more. The frame was smooth, and I felt less vibration and bumps with this bike than I do with the steel frame and fat tires of the old one. Easier to zip in and out of traffic as well.

There were some small fit problems that will need solving, like I'm pretty sure those bars are not in the right place. My hands hurt. Not a numbness. Nothing nerve related...actual pain in the meat of my hands. Also the backs of my shoulders are sore. I really tried not to lean on the hoods too much but I just had no choice. SO that needs looking into. And there is an intermittent single, clear CLICK coming from the bottom when I put a lot of pressure on the pedals. Maybe the BB, maybe the crank, maybe the pedals. Doesn't happen when spinning, just when you apply a lot of power. I'm sure the LBS will find it.

Oh, also? I already scratched her.

She was never gonna stay perfect. At least now it is done and I can stop worrying about it. :)

So maybe you're wondering why I named her Jasmine. Well, I'll tell you. My wife's name is Donna. She is a redhead. My hybrid *mart bike is red and I like to ride it. :) Ipso facto, I named it Donna2.

Now, the Defy 3. It's blue. In the 90s there was a little wrestling promotion called Eastern Championship Wrestling, and I was a fan. There was a guy called The Blue Meanie. Silly and goofy and fat, stuffed into super tight clothing, but the guy had skills. Here's his Wikipedia pic:

That dude is such a Fred. He went on to work for years, at various points being managed by - and dating in real life - porn actress Jasmine St. Claire.

Since my wife demands that I match my gear to the bike color, I will end up a big ole Fred with all blue gear, riding a blue bike. "Blue" is also colloquialism for dirty, and Ms. St. Claire was a dirty girl. The Blue Meanie...uhh...dated her.

And so my bike is named Jasmine. ;)

So I have a road bike. And of course, it's going to rain here in CT for the next freaking week. Or more. Grr.

I cannot say enough nice things about the guys at College Street Cycles. I took my beat-up Xmart bike in there to get the suspension fork removed, and Bob went into their stock and found an old generic cromoly fork that would work. He took the bike at 1 PM, replaced the fork, adjusted the bottom bracket (it was over-tightened), and lubed the wheels, bb and chain. Called me at 6 PM to tell me it was ready. 65 bucks for everything, and the bike feels utterly different now. More controlled, and the BB is spinning smoothly, which it never has.

When I got there to pick it up, he and the other mechanic chatted with me about my future plans, the century I want to try, my current bike, the possibilities for future bikes, etc. We had a good general "bike guys" chat, and they treated this newbie with respect. It was a far cry from my last LBS experience. I really felt like they cared about what I needed, they were interested in my end of the conversation, etc. At one point I told them how much attitude I get from a certain other shop over my Xmart bike, and one of the guys said what a lot of people here say: If you're riding, then that is all that matters. Lots of people start on department store bikes until they learn what they need and what they want to accomplish.

I cannot tell you how nice that was to hear from an LBS employee!

They even threw in two Bonk Breaker bars...we had talked earlier about how much I love Clif bars and they said these were even better, smaller and wouldn't leave my mouth feeling like I just ate dry oats (as Clifs can do sometimes). Gonna try a long ride tomorrow and give 'em a shot.

College Street Cycles just got shot to the top of my list. I will likely be buying a bike in mid-August and they will be my first stop. I highly recommend them, especially to new riders.

I'm planning to buy a bike during the cold New England months, mainly because that's when I'll be able to save enough to make it worth looking, but also in hopes of getting a deal on older stock before the new season. My brain is mud at this point with options and models and too many choices. SO...I was thinking maybe if I laid out what I'm looking for, some of you kindly folk could point me toward possibilities?

What I want:

1. Steel. I'm 250 now, and will remain somewhere between 190 and 220 for the next few years. Steel is smoother. And stronger. I have no idea what abuse I may give a bike as I get stronger and faster, but I know I'm never going to care about a pound or three of frame weight. I'd prefer the strength. But if someone has a good argument why I'm crazy and aluminum would be just fine, I'm all ears.

2. Some speed. I don't need a race-ready speed demon, but it would be nice if I could coax a little speed out of the bike without pushing myself to my absolute limits just to see 25MPH.

3. Quality components. I'd say somewhere in the Deore-level would be about where I want to start. Not partial to Shimano over SRAM though. And as many gears as I can get, because I have no idea where or how I will be riding in say, 18 months.

4. Places for all sorts of Fred gear. Racks, fenders, lights, what have you. Attachment points for all this stuff would be important.

5. I tend to favor distance over speed, and my goal is to ride centuries (more than likely slow ones...at least in the next couple of years). So comfort would be a consideration, although I know that is mostly a matter of fit and adjustments.

I don't know if I want a hybrid with road bars or 26" fat tires or maybe 700c wheels with flat bars...it's so freaking confounding now and I have talked myself into loving so many different bikes that if I were a rich man, I would have at least five brand new bikes right now. :)

Models I have liked but are all aluminum:

Trek FX 7.3
Kona Dew Drop
Jamis Ventura Comp
Marin Venezia
Marin Portofino

Oh in case it's not obvious I am partial to red. That would be a huge bonus, if the perfect bike came in red. :)

So...if you owned a shop and I came to you, to what would you steer me?

How do you not remember the heat he took for his stupid, mean jokes about a kid?

McCain's jokes about Chelsea were the first reason I began to dislike him. Not the last, but they were certainly the first.

Also, C: Agent Boobs McRed kicking ass in high def ain't exactly terrible to watch. More of her and less of the White House crap please.

BZZZZZZT! Ben Linus tells the truth more often than anyone on the show other than Hurley. In fact his default position is to be honest. HOWEVER...he will leave things out (lies of ommission) and he simply won't answer sometimes.

That's not the same as outright lying. HOWEVER pt. 2: Ben sees himself as a liar, and that is important. His lack of faith in himself is part of his nature and it's why he chose to kill Jacob even though he knew it was wrong.

What on earth could explain Amazon's absolute refusal to add folders to the Kindle OS? I mean...multiple iterations of the first one, a whole second device and now a third and they still refuse to address the number one consumer request.

We know it's possible, it's just freaking Linux under there. What is going on here?

"I don't see how they offer much of a real advantage over a hard copy of the same book"

1. Whispernet. Buy whatever, whenever (as long as I can get a signal). Really convenient.

2. I'm able to carry literally hundreds if not thousands of titles, just like my iPod carries a ton of music. I never know what I might want but with my Kindle it's all at my fingertips. This is especially useful when traveling.

3. While working out on cardio machines, I can have the kindle turn pages for me. It lays flat, it turns pages and I can change text size at whim. That is the number one way I use mine...to keep my brain entertained while doing cardio. Makes the time fly by.

4. My average cost of a book is about 4 bucks and I don't need massive amounts of storage space. I STILL haven't unpacked all my books from a move I made in 2000. TOO MANY BOOKS.

For some people, e-books make sense. I am one of those people.

I do not like DRM. I DO like my Kindle. However, I know Amazon can lock me out if they want. SO...

I could protect myself two ways, in theory: I could buy most of my ebooks from other sites, and regardless of where I get them, I could crack every single one as soon as I get it.

I could strip DRM, convert to standard .mobi and then put it on my Kindle. If you have the google, you can learn to do his fairly easily.

Does it suck? HELL yes. However, if I want the device I gotta play Amazon's game. I would, if I were so inclined, have to go out of my way to make sure I can keep what I paid for.

Not saying I do this. Just saying it can be done. Just don't ever share your cracked files and no one but you and your hard drive will know. Unless you stupidly post the information on Consumerist. :)

Sorry, but the ep was a return to the overly-talkative exposition-only episodes that have plagued the show since the end of season 1.

I felt it was packed with terrible dialogue and too much exposition. Show me, don't tell me. Show me what these experiments were that were so horrible. Show me what make the kids want to start a revolution in the first place. Show me the horror of what went down. Show me.

And for God's sake, the sock moment between sisters? Too many words. That part of the scene, with those two actresses emoting like that? Angela should have stopped talking for a minute after saying "I have socks for you." Instead we got this huge Basil-exposition group of sentences that explained the emotions we were already watching. A big silent pause there would have been a powerful moment. Instead she never stopped talking, all the way up to "I lied to you." The impact of all of it fell flat, as did the "You, You, You" stuff.

Show me, don't tell me. What seems necessary in the writer's room is not always necessary on the screen.

While I agree how great this episode was, this amazes me:

"Shirley Manson is doing a great job in this series. She gave her finest performance yet in this episode."

She is HORRIBLE. One of the worst actresses that has ever been on TV or film, and I recently watched Redline, so I've seen some truly awful acting.

Shirley Manson is almost the worst possible choice for the role of Weaver.

I actually watched last weeks and this weeks eps back-to-back. I barely giggled at all with JD in the picture...I'm so tired of the character and the actor.

Meanwhile I laughed all the way through the episode that featured the interns. It was exactly as refreshing as I expected.

The show could survive without JD. I think it would be a better show.

Mark I get it. I'm not saying I expect a realistic show...hence my discussion of suspension of disbelief. BUT...when EVERY element of the show is so far out there and/or contains nothing but magic plot devices designed to put our stars in peril and add "twists and turns..." well it gets tiring. Add in the fact that the headfake terror plot (Juma's White House invasion) is so utterly and completely not even within the realm of possible even in the world of 24...and the show has lost me.

Chuck is careful not to violate certain rules. They ground the show with enough reality - and explain the insanely stupid spy stuff - so that you can accept whatever it is they show you. 99% of the time, anyway. 24 has given up completely on trying to ground the show in any way.

Brannon. effing. Braga. I blame him. He is (co)running this show the way he ran Voyager - into the ground.

I'm so bored with the ridiculousness of 24 now. I love the scenes where Jack is yelling at/beating on someone. I love the scenes where Keifer has to show the weight and pain that the years have added to Jack. What I can't stand anymore is the well-beyond-over-the-top plot devices and stupid things that couldn't ever possibly happen in real life. I just can't connect with all the setup to get to the Blackwater/Halliburton conspiracy.

Oh, I mean Starkwood. Sorry. Thought it was 2003 for a second.

Anyway...The show lost me when a team of African thugs rolled up out of the Potomac and took over the White House. There's "suspension-of-disbelief for the sake of enjoyment" and there's "oh my God this is retarded." 24 has tipped over into full retard for me.

Even if the rest of the season is an action-packed thrill ride...I think I'm done with 24. I smell Brannon Braga in everything and I can't take any more "Let's just re-align the dilithium matrix and shunt it to the deflector array" logic

If you don't see that the last two episodes - particularly the last one - are a MASSIVE improvement, then you are blind. I feel like maybe you are complaining about this just to see yourself complain with all the other 'Heroes sucks" cool kids. How could a person who watches the show closely not see the marked improvement in the last two weeks?

The show has ALREADY improved dramatically with Fuller's influence back in full swing, and I see it going nowhere but up from here.

I was one bad ep away from deleting the season pass, but the last episode in particular turned me around. Heroes is good again, at least for now.

Yeah, mee too. I Don't even get how someone could dislike it. It was...what's the word? Focused. Also, Good. See also: Well-written.

The fact that it didn't contain whiny Claire or whiny Hiro (how they made me dislike the best character on the show is beyond me) was a bonus. Also, not trying to be Lost with 37 storylines at once also helped.

I loved this ep and would watch a million more like it.

@mamalicious: As much as I don't want to blame the OP...yeah. This. AT some point it is YOUR responsibility to mitigate your damages. Going back a second time without your own rope is just flat-out stupid.
