Happy Birthday, Jim.

Jeff, having maxed out at maybe two or three miles in one run for all of my running life up to that point in time, I didn't think I could run a marathon either. If you are able to run one mile, tho -- and have a good partner, like my girlfriend -- believe me, it's possible. The human body is incredible.

Running a marathon is an amazing life event, and is worth the effort, so long as you're smart about feeding yourself (which I already know you are) and taking care of your joints.

Simply training for it would do incredible things to your body, your mind, and likely your friendship with Jim (at first through the camaraderie of pain, and then via sharing the zen state of hitting your second wind and floating along).

Just my take. It is also insane and absurd, but so is life.

That right-to-dry movement looks really great. People power!

"But out of every crisis comes opportunity if you’re willing to keep your eyes open."

Jeff, Don't let that sentiment escape you -- it's the mantra of successful, happy people. Sorry to hear about what happened, but I'm sure you'll adjust and in hindsight be grateful you were forced into a more satisfying direction.

Anyhow, Best,

A personal hero of mine, for sure. Truly a great loss. I tipped my hat to him on a Halloween post last Fall.

I noticed your entry heavily borrows from today's New York Times' piece, and you should say so.

Here's a favorite Vonnegut excerpt of mine, from Cat's Cradle:

“God leaned close as mud as man sat up, looked around, and spoke. Man blinked. ‘What is the purpose of all this?’ he asked politely.

‘Everything must have a purpose?’ asked God.

    ‘Certainly,’ said man.

‘Then I leave it to you to think of one for all this,’ said God.”
