Yoake:

Saya sudah menjelaskan panjang lebar apa yang dimaksud dengan kalimat saya tersebut di artikel ini, bahkan dengan disclaimer "Either you’ll be surprised, you’ll think I’m crazy, you’ll reject me outright because of my baseless interpretation, or you’ll simply have to break your old and dusty and inflexibly restrictive frame of reference first."

(QS. Ghafir 40:58)

Wow... everybody is talking about ThinkPad here...

I own a Lenovo Y400, does anybody designing it is around here?

Cause I've got some suggestions & critics for it:

* Touchpad is too "center". Should move it a little bit to the left. Everybody knows why.
* The hard-edged design is hard to the hands & wrists.
* The keyboard is too "hard". It requires too much force to push the keys.
* The speakers give mild electric shock, even when not connected to AC power.
* My right speaker is stronger than left speaker. I'm not sure whether it's a design flaw or manufacturing flaw specific to my laptop.
* What's up with the subwoofers? I don't even know if it works.

I own a Lenovo Y400... Not exactly a ThinkPad :)

I suggest giving choice to as many distro as possible when ordering. I would vote for Kubuntu... and Ubuntu.

The most important thing, though, is that if a user decides to install any recent GNU/Linux OS, whatever the distro is, things should all just-work. That is, there should be no external driver/support necessary from Lenovo CD etc. required to operate anything, especially hardware.

In my experience, Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn didn't support Lenovo Y400's sound device out-of-the-box, and this was bad. Actually for this most important thing, Lenovo should work with the Linux kernel developers because that's where you should be. Test your hardware with the latest Linux kernels and if something went wrong, work with them to fix it. *ALL* distros will be affected (though it may take some time to propagate), guaranteed.

About Lenovo Y400:
* some patching is needed to alsasound to work correctly with Lenovo Y400, and it now outputs sound... although I'm not perfectly happy. I can't hear the subwoofer, and the balance is too right-speaker-oriented. It's probably a hardware flaw in mine since this also true in Windows.
* I'm not sure if 3D/video works properly. I can get1280x800 resolution without much trouble. However 3D and video sometimes slow, sometimes not the way I like it. I don't use it too much as I'm a programmer so I don't really care.
* I've never been able to use the memory card reader. I'm not even sure if it's a problem with the Linux driver for Lenovo's card reader or my Kubuntu installation.
* Not sure about Firewire. I don't have any Firewire devices at the moment.

Yep. True.

Where to go from strength... there lies in my weaknesses.

And from that, I need other people.

I haven't had any company yet, but I usually ask my fellow friends where he/she's good at, or interested in.

One example, a personal story: there is this girl studying Informatics at a college. She's currently on her final paper about Ruby on Rails [1], a web development platform.

However, she also told me she loved interior design (as a hobby). So aide from helping her with Ruby on Rails, I also gave her a copy of Chief Architect [2]. I thought that may help her realize her dreams, no matter which one(s) she decided to pick. Or both.

I'm not sure why I did that. I just wanted to see the things she's good at. I'm not even sure whether my [future] company will ever need her in the areas she's good at.

At least I know I've made an effort to strengthen her skills in some areas she loves. Maybe that'll come in handy later. If not for me, then if it's good for her then I'm undoubtedly happy. :-)
