I have several GMail accounts, for various purposes, including my business (Apps). If GMail was a paid service, I would not be willing to provide Google with all of the personal information they get. I am willing to let Google have personal information in exchange for services, but not willing to pay Google for the privilege of serving up advertising based on my information. The whole reason Google gets away with collecting the data they do is the free services they provide.

The carriers would never allow a data (XMPP, or otherwise) IM client. I'm sure the goog had a big enough fight with them over gtalk (i'm sure the only reason it stayed in was the fact that gtalk doesn't have the same penetration of AIM/Yahoo/MSN messengers). The crriers charge for a SMS for every IM.
