Great article, a perfect read for anyone job hunting in these tougher economic times. And, a good reminder to me to keep working hard at my job.

@Brent - thanks for the photo link, those are great! BTW I would wager that the lens quality is actually better now (better materials and techniques), but the imaging size (e.g. 4x5 & 8x10 film sheets) back then was relatively enormous. That makes for really stunning images.

Lots to absorb & process, digesting it all at the moment. I wish I had the "canvas" to work on like you guys do. It's limited to "fascinating hobby" status for me at the moment.

@krissy Which brings me to a question, Darren. Is it EVER okay to change a tweeter’s tweet slightly so one can RT it? Please, nobody throw pillows or bricks at me for asking!</blockquote>

Krissy, there's absolutely no shame in rewriting a retweet, in my opinion. There's only so much you can put in 140 chrs.; not everyone is as concise as required sometimes. I like moving the originator's name to the end, like so "(via @krissy)". That way, it's like, "thanks, @krissy" instead of "at" that originator (but they still get the response). It just feels better grammatically.

Another reason I don't mind rewriting it (with the "hat tip" above) is that I might want to put my own spin on it, or indicate why I think it's relevant. Here's <a href="http://search.twitter.com/search?q=&ands=RT+&phrase=&ors=&nots=&tag=&lang=en&from=allanwhite&to=&ref=&near=&within=15&units=mi&since=&until=&rpp=15">some examples</a> from me recently that highlight some of these ideas.

I cannot believe you've omitted Outside magazine. Full of really great writing (many from great writers that turn into books, such as John Krakauer), real adventures, and useful, get-outside-the-gym fitness. Inspires me to get outside and live life!

I've also grown quite fond of Smithsonian. It's helped me appreciate my country and history, and consistently profiles great men of history and what we can learn from them. Worth looking at.

Real men: leave the vapid, expensive-lifestyle style rags alone. Read things that inspire and challenge you!

@ Matt: We use CatDV as the "app that automatically catalogs contents of hard drives on the shelf, includes an offline searchable database of the filenames/metadata in those files". Plug it in, it scans the files (they have a capture app for scanning tapes called Live Capture), creates previews (I make SD-res H.264 mp4s), and then metadata can be added. We have a whole team adding clips & info via their CatDV Server product.

FCP Server does this to a degree, but we've found CatDV to be more flexible. http://www.squarebox.co.uk/

As to the "remind me to refresh drives" bit, I could see that being an applescript or cron (once a year) notice. I suppose we could use CatDV's "Play all clips as sequence" to play through every clip. Is that needed, or just a spin-up?

Wow. The new Flash site is truly stunning. The photography does indeed come first. And, at the end of the day, what serves the client should come first, regardless of technology.

Flash has been lambasted so much, quite unfairly in many cases my opinion. There's no way you could execute what you're doing now without it. Those who might not agree probably won't appreciate the subtle distinctions between Flash and JS effects (real-time HSV changes, blurring, true full-screen, much faster rendering than JS).

Looks great. I love the ones from Kampala, it's more real than my own memories of Uganda.

I use FotoMagico for slideshows - it's just amazing. I'd guess you'd get 90% of the quality you work for above in 20% of the time. You can create audio markers in a song, and set the slides to transition on the markers. They look gorgeous, it's resolution-independent (HD, SD, web) and fast (I usually play out of the laptop at 60FPS). I bring the images straight in from an Aperture album or Smart album.

I'm a video editor on FCP, and I can't imagine doing it all in FCP after using FotoMagico. Check it, it's without peer.

I think being there in person would have helped; as it is, it's hard to tell what's virtual and what's not (the point, I'm sure).
Only a dozen? Well, when you have 10GB of RAM in the box, the only problem is jumping to the one you want. Ok, right now I only have 8 running, but I haven't picked up full steam yet.

What I love about QS: I think about what I want and just start typing. It usually finds it for me - way, way faster than hunting and clicking around in the finder. Speed is really important, too - the biggest obstacle is now the speed of the interface (or the operator), not the hardware anymore. QS helps me be fast.

Yes, those of us who need all those apps tend to be power users for whom QS fits their mindset and approach to working. There's more than one kind of user, obviously - use what works for you.

I want QuickSilver on my iPhone. I already think that way (regarding how I use my computer) - I don't think it can be done with a web-app, though. Give Alcor a real SDK!

Is it possible to create an imaging plug-in for Aperture (not just export)? I'd really like to see a vignette filter in there (to darken edges), and I'd be willing to work on it myself. But, I don't know where to start, or if Aperture's API allows for it.

Any suggestions? Is this possible? Thanks!

Awesome! Very well-designed and subtle, but I find myself watching every area to see what they're doing. It has whimsy and surprise.

I have to make logo loops for conferences and festivals; this is inspiring (though probably consumes more time than I have to hit a mark like this).

DUN: LOL! So true.

Bob: Burn-in isn't much a problem on projectors, AFAIK.

Crabster: Ehh, I think the posting content here is fine. I wonder if "creative loops for menus and lower thirds" is a bit of an oxymoron. I don't see much real freshness in those areas.
