I am too. I retired from the industry in part because the more known you are, the more people come out of the woodwork to exploit you or your ideas. I decided I'd rather go off in a corner somewhere and make money quietly than have to deal with all the latest -- and comparatively ineffectual - trick that misguided affiliates and unethical marketers employ to move product.

It's an important thing to point out. People constantly ask me how I got to this place, or how I did that thing. And the answer is always the same -- until I got there, I did nothing else. Just to get to the 100k mark, for about three solid years I worked 19 hours a day, slept five, started over, six days a week. Most of that time I barely scraped by and lived in a motel efficiency. With a friend. In such bad health sometimes that I could barely make the walk to the bathroom and back. With no health insurance, so when I started to make money, I still had to maintain that lifestyle in order to be able to pay my health costs. (pre-existing conditions suck).

And then? At the end of those three years? I finally got somwhere. And one minor mistake cost me everything, including my health and I had to start over. That time, it only took me a few months to get back where I was, once I stopped moping and actually did something.

So the moral of the story is: if you're willing to dedicate Everything to something for long enough, you can get there. You have to consider the costs, sure, the time put in, the risk of failure, stagnated friendships, strained family relations, stress, your health. But in the end, you have to go big. Or go back home.

You know, there's another reason people don't link to great content - it's the brand. For years, my main site had a title, even an address, that resonated with my population but not my peers, that gave me great search rankings but was only relevant to a few of my closest connections.

If I had to go back and do it over, I'd have picked a snappier brand name, and relied more on my link building skills than my long tail to short tail keyword methods.

I don't think the fuss, such that it is, is about the number of people you follow - the folks at Twitter seem reasonable, and will likely make exceptions for certain people who feel like they can manage that level of noise.

It seems more to be about the feeling of Twitter freedom disappearing. As was recently written, one of Twitters power is the way the issue of audience is treated. This directly affects that, and some people may fear this is the beginning of many restrictions they won't like.

I shop at whole foods because ... I can. When I couldn't afford it, it was a rare treat. But there is a way to cut back on costs without skimping on your health. And for healthy, untainted food, it's worth the extra money, I'm sorry. I don't mean to say that folks who feel they are too poor to shop there should just because it's healthy.

I'm saying that there are ways to get beyond even abject poverty and still eat right, and well. I've been there, I've had to choose between health costs and good food. Without health insurance and really high medical bills, for a few years it was, should I be healthier in the first place by eating right or should I keep treating my symptoms with medication - each time I chose meds only it was a disaster.

So I understand the plight of someone who just can't afford it. But Whole Foods doesn't control the cost of shopping organically. If I were on the marketing board there, I'd keep the brand consistent and do a harder push to the population that can afford it, and do more with the manufacturers to get their coupons available to more people, faster. Then you're helping people save money but not losing your brand identity.
