oldergirlbeauty - some mineral makeups (like Bare Minerals) have "bismuth oxychloride" in it. The science students here will recognize the "-chloride" as a salt, and some of us (myself included) find salts irritating. The usual result? Itching.

This product also has bismuth oxychloride, however I will note that this salt is present in varying amounts in mineral foundations. I can't wear Bare Minerals, but have another mineral makeup with a lower % of the ingredient and have no problem with that one.

Anyway, if this and others don't work for you, try to find one with no bismuth oxychloride (and thank your sensitive skin). :P

Mineral makeups are really nic

Mineral makeups are really nice, when done well! I hydrate and prime, just as I would for "regular" foundation, and then use concealer. In fact, I've found my La Base Pro works as well for mineral makeup as traditional foundations - just let it "set" for a minute or two before moving on to the powder.

I always work in a circular motion with the brush, which is a technique that takes a bit of practice especially around the eyes and nose (as you've noticed!).

Mineral makeup works really well with powder blushes and bronzers, of course, but you can still use creams if you want. I was afraid, at first, that it would make "mud" but it doesn't, unlike trying to do this over a "regular powder foundation."

I usually finish with a light spritz of Evian or a similar water-based spray to take any powdery edge away. This also boosts luminousity a bit.

You can also apply most mineral makeups "damp", which I do by spritzing my brush with Evian before picking up the mineral makeup and swirling it on. It changes up the finish a bit.

Have fun!

You know what, Isabel? I'm so glad you posted this comment!

I think, as a sweeping generalization (which I don't normally make), people of mixed-races are the most beautiful folks on earth. However... that lovely mixing makes for a lot of confusion when it comes to this subject.

I love working with people with mixed backgrounds, but it's much easier in person for me, of course. I can just "see" the tones. An odd gift, but I guess that's what makes me a good makeup artist, I suppose.

I'd love to see pics of you (you don't need to post them here - send them to me at jen@beautyschoolblog.net) if you want, and see if I can help a little? It's worth a shot. Meanwhile, do any of the other questions help? Like the colors you can wear (ivory vs. white, ocean blues vs. coppers)? A lot of women of color assume they must be "warm" but that's not always the case, as you see in this article.

Also, I'm incredibly cool-toned, but have warm-toned eyes and look best with warm hair colors. Go figure! (and I'm disappointingly Anglo and Euro-derived through-and-through) So maybe you can take heart in the fact that not all of the world follows the "pattern", and it's not just those of mixed race. :)

Anyway, enough rambling. Thanks so much for your comment. I love the feedback, even if it's that the info wasn't 100% what you were looking for.

xoxo
