Wow! This visual metaphor sounds powerful. Do you know how to make that happen? I don't :-), but if you can do it, more power to you! Do you know a bunch of kids who will serve as actors? Remember that you are going to film this sequence, so it's not just theoretical. Is there one that could be nearly as effective, but not so complicated to create?

These are great questions about the production process. We are going to answer all of these questions as part of our day to day activities in class. You could design my lessons ;-).

What I intended for you to do for class was to focus on five questions that would help us narrow our topic. For example, how much do we throw away that could</> be recycled?

If you get a chance, please add some new questions before class and answer how these questions will help us make our film.

I use Jing! to make quick 1-3 minute screencasts for my students for things that I'm pretty sure that I will have to reteach 100 times or so.

Sometimes, especially with tech stuff, they don't know they don't understand until they know they don't understand--and it's always one at a time. So instead of reteaching the same thing over and over, I can let the screencast do my work for me--and I sound as fresh and enthusiastic as I did the first time I taught it. The screencast never runs out of patience :-)

I, too, was frustrated that I couldn't easily embed--I'll try the workaround next time.

If anyone wants to see some screencasts, there are some on my blogunder category "screencasts."

Sounds like even though you were frustrated at times, you did learn something--yea!

I appreciate your insight about how difficult it is to talk to strangers and to work in a group. Sometimes a camera is a good way to put a little distance between us and the strangers and embolden us to reach out and find out what others are thinking.

Glad you found some resources.

I think you demonstrated great leadership during this project.

It was a pleasure having you in class. Have a great summer.

I have recruited adults "blog readers" from the school and beyond. The students do not know their blog mentors and they are excited when someone besides me and my student teacher write back.

Some of the recruited adults have poked around to other blogs and have commented on them as well. They have also given the link to friends, colleagues, and spouses who have jumped in every once in awhile.

I would like a more organic readership, but this was a start.

I have encouraged the students to put clustrmaps on their blogs so that they can see if others are visiting (even if they are not commenting).

You could also pair up with another class (in town, out of town, across the world) and get an organized type of feedback.

Good luck!

Andrew--

I sense frustration.

I'm also sensing that this frustration/anger is aimed at me, your loving teacher. No problem, I can handle it.

To address several issues:
1) "because you can’t possibly check all the work at once"
If you notice, I've been "checking your work" all along--I've been commenting and urging you to revise your posts, do more research, finish the submissions you were to have posted. I then gave one last warning to update you blogs and get all posts published before I put a grade to them.

Seeing that we started this project March 25 and have been blogging since April 4, it seems that summarizing and responding to 11 pieces of information is a reasonable amount of work.

2)"Also you have to think what’s important to teach them when making the video and what to cut out, teaching the class how to work a program for a whole period is very boring and unnecessary especially if you personally don’t know how"

I did put thought into what is important to teach and what "could be cut out" but if you have specific suggestions for feedback, then I would be happy to hear them.

While it is true that some students know a lot about technology, many students do not. It is my job to teach them.

I'm not sure what program you are talking about that I don't know how to use, but if it is Adobe Premiere Elements, I think you may be misinformed. While I don't claim to be an expert, I have played around with it enough to be able to make my own little movies and create screencasts for our class so that I don't have to take a lot of class time to re–teach the basics.

3)"being weighted so hard on my grade"

We should discuss all grade matters on an individual basis.

4)"filming can be last seeing that the school is too poor to buy even those cheap things from Wal-Mart; why waste money on tapes and fire-wires when digital is more efficient."

Yes, I, too, would rather have digital cameras, but to have a class set, this is what I could get a grant for. That grant was also the only reason you could check out that camera to enter the contest.

This rant does not seem appropriate for the class blog. I'm not sure how it is furthering academic discourse.

I will be pleased to have specific feedback on how to improve the project.

Please edit to take out inappropriate language This is a class project.

I'm glad you learned how to internally link you posts--it's helpful to your reader.

Yes, I read the post and ignored the tone. Perhaps I shouldn't have.

Britt--

The idea behind the purpose and audience of a blog is one I wrestle with briefly--and then move on because I feel impelled to write or I will forget what I was thinking.

My blog has multiple purposes and audiences, but I have just left it under one umbrella for my own sanity.

1) I write for my students to show them models of how to blog, how to summarize and respond to research, and post screencasts for "how to's"--mostly technical stuff.

2) I write for my students' parents to explain my rationale and keep them informed.

3) I write for my colleagues (known and unknown) who might be interested in adapting the project.

4) But it seems mostly I write for myself to get down the teaching reflections that sometimes find their way to a post-it note (and sometimes not). I'm trying to be deliberate in my reflections.

5) And the added bonus is when someone I don't know does read my blog and adds insight that I would never have had if I had just written in my journal.

So while I don't expect to become a world famous writer, it's nice to know there is the possibility of a wider readership than just me.
