It is interesting, Asia, how students all over the world have similar interests and try similar activities. We had a concert a couple of weeks ago, with students from grade 6/7 who had formed bands and singin groups during their music lessons. They were terrific.

Many people tell me I am very PATIENT. I rarely get stressed out by situations, I put off till tomorrow what I really don't have to do today (hence it never gets done, cause tomorrow never comes). I never let things worry me. I can sit for hours reading a book, or completing a jigsaw puzzle or using the computer. PATIENT that's me.

The world has set goals for us to try to achieve but too often money is sent to countries where poverty is happening and due to corrupt politicians or public servants, the money doesn't always reach those who need it the most.
G'day Kevin,
I totally agree. One person can make a very small difference but if everyone pulls together then change can be seen in a huge way. A bit like the litter at school - lots drop it and if only one person picks it up, eventually it will be a huge rubbish dump. But if everyone picks it up and are trained not to drop it in the first place, then change can be seen in the playground.

G'day Chelsea,
Welcome to the student blogging competition. I hope you enjoy all the activities. After this comment, you should get a dot on your map from Tasmania, Australia.

Lots of the American grade 8 students are into dancing and singing. You might want to check out their blogs in the participants list in my class blog. Look above my avatar.

Remember there are two avatars you can have - a user avatar which appears wherever you make a comment - this one I know is working for you. The other is your blog avatar which will appear on your sidebar when you have added it in the Design>widget>blog avatar add section.

@Dave - as a newbie blogger myself, I am also a bit of a control freak, but I have this week allowed three of my students to publish without having to get my approval. I have suggested though, that they let mum or dad see it first in case there is too much personal information involved.

@Dan - I have 29 students in the class and so far 20 have opted to have their own blog - the others are content just adding comments or perhaps sending a post to be published in a friend's blog.

@John - a bit of hard work to start with, but I am gradually letting go the "blogger" strings - only the keen students have decided to have their own blogs so I shouldn't have any problems.

@Grace - I have already seen their keenness and the shouts of joy when someone from overseas writes on their blog - they were also amazed with the Twitter chat with you - I am just opening their eyes to what is outside their little world here in Tasmania

@Alice and @Lindsay- that is precisely what I did - taught firstly about being internet savvy, then about blogging by setting up a class blog and showing how to comment. The keen ones wanted to write posts so I added them in, and finally they wanted their own. By the end of next term most of them will have full control and be able to publish without notifying me and I will use RSS feeds to check on them.

@Michele - luckily no problems yet and when I look at the students I have who are blogging, I doubt whether there will be any problems other than them being too keen and perhaps giving a bit too much info unintentionally about themselves especially regarding sporting teams.

@Inpi - grade 6/7 are generally 11-13 years old and I know their thrill of freedom - one student had his 13th birthday Sunday and on Monday morning he was adding a Weather pixie and feedjit map to his blog as I will not allow them to add widgets unless they are the correct age. The look on his face when he came in and found he could now add them was indescribable.

@Michele - when I first started thinking about blogging with my students, the techie guys in our education department wanted me to use Sharepoint and I said that I wanted to extend the students world outside the bounds of the school. So eventually I got permission as long as I was moderating all comments and checking the posts. This I have done and the students are writing on each others blogs; we have students from various countries also commenting and teachers around the world from my Twitter network also commenting. Students parents and relatives are adding their bit to the comments. But it is the local teachers who I can't get to add their little bit.

@Sarah - thanks for that but I think I am a bit chatty in the staffroom and would never be able to say "Read my blog to find out what is happening in my room"; I know I talk too much about what I am doing with Web 2.0 This might be what is putting some of them off.

@Melissa - I think this comment challenge with the student participants has been great. My students who have their own blog have started conversations with other students around the world and now have their blog URL on the blogroll. The kids are loving all the comments from around the world, but I feel it is a pity that other local staff can't find that 10 or 15 minutes once a week or fortnight to make a comment.

My class has been blogging since the beginning of this year (February) and we have a class blog at http://wyatt67.edublogs.org but many of the students also have their own blog.

I have also been showing some teachers about blogging and they can be found on my blogroll.

We have never done podcasts. Perhaps you would like to tell us how you make them and what programmes you use.

@Sue - that twitter you sent out way back in January certainly helped improve my blog and its readership. There were some excellent hints given and I felt I needed to share them on this particular challenge activity.

@dogtrax - maybe I didn't write it very well but any activities involving Web 2.0 I will have already tested out before asking the students to use it - otherwise as you say, there could be problems - often I find the problem is I can do it as an adult but because of filtering either at school or at home - some students can't get to that particular website or link.

Thanks Sue - might also have a google about student commenting and see what comes up, but would like to follow as close as possible to the adult version. Will eventually make the students into better bloggers and comments are a large part of that happening in their future. I can already see a difference in some of the students.

Thanks Kevin, that would be great if you can dig up that resource. I could then add as a link on the student page to give them some more clues to improve their blogging.

Well, Sue after reading this post and joining the comment challenge, I have now downloaded both co.mments and cocomment to track where I am going and who is making more comments. I noticed cocomment didn't have a minimum age for users, so would it be suitable for students to have to keep track of where they have commented? Or might this be a bit chancy?
