No I do get your point, it's just that in your case you may be one of the exceptions that proves the rule. I run a number of sites, all of them are dofollow, some are way more popular than this one, yet none of them get as many spam comments as this one has since it got on that list. It shows up in the referrer logs all the time, the number of people who find this site searching specifically for "do follow" and the sad fact is that not that many of them are not bloggers, it's usually someone leaving a half arsed comment to justify having their link posted. That said, you appear to be one of the exceptions that prove the rule and I appreciate that. With most others I am referring they drop they're link and move on, and certainly never return to reply to a comment. Thanks for your comments Matthew, I hope to see you around here again

I'm sorry you don't see the point I was making in my second paragraph. Also, as I see it, the content of this thread is still current. If the content was outdated or lacked any value, I wouldn't waste my time – regardless of the 1-2 cents of potential link juice it *might* offer me. Do I appreciate the minuscule (if any) amount of link juice offered by a "do-follow" blog? Sure I do. I make an effort to engage in intelligent discussion on topics that concern me. I also like to see benefits in terms of networking, sharing ideas, gaining insight, and yes, any possible link juice that 'might' go any of my various sites. Sometimes we let our prejudices blind us from the full spectrum of others' intentions. That being said, I appreciate your frustration with spammers, I'm on the receiving end of dozens every day of the week. I've participated in a few blog threads due to the fact that they actually advertise they are "do-follow" friendly. I've since been back to the same blogs to participate in further discussion because of their content, writing style, or overall blog vibe. I saw some value in your post, and I attempted to add some intelligent feedback. My agenda might not be 100% to your liking, but is that ever the case anywhere?

So.. how did you find this particular post? This post is over 9 months old and not particularly link worthy. In fact, it was just a short rant that I wrote because I was pissed off, yet, 9 month later it still regularly gets comments, not because of the content, but because it has the term "do-follow" in it. And just like you, the majority of comments on the post are by people pimping not their personal sites or blogs, bit companies like you! Point made!

As others have mentioned in this thread, all blogs will get their share of spammers, regardless of whether no-follow attributes are present or not. So many spam comments are automated anyway, bots travel the net and make auto comments on non-registration blogs. While some might actively search for and choose "do-follow" blogs to engage in discussion, often this type of visitor has full intention of contributing to the discussion, and merely wants to engage where here will also be rewarded.

<a href="#comment-133557">@Omar</a> I’d love you to qualify why you think that “do follow” blogs attract more viewers and visitors? In my experience, it’s great content that brings visitors, all “do follow” does is attract a lot people to make comments so that they can gain a bit of link juice. The vast majority of them never return again and the comments that they leave are half-hearted at best.I’m very curious to know what search term brought you to this post and prompted you to leave a comment? Was it “dofollow seo blogs” by any chance?

Do follow blogs attract more viewers and visitors. It also attracts more comments (both valid, and spam related). Use Akismet to filter out most spam, and moderate the comments. Turning comments into nofollow isn’t going to help you out much, spam still comes. Spam is a part of online life unfortunately, is it so hard to delete the crap? The way I see it, dofollow blogs will increase your readership and number of quality comments (even though it also increases spam). So you might have to spend a little more time filtering, but you get more quality comments. Isn’t the tradeoff worth it?

I’m willing to put up with occasional lock ups as Warcraft only takes up 6 Gigabyetes when patched up to version 2.4.2.Also you’re only paying £9/month for warcraft = £108/yr3 New PC or Console games a year = £100Unless you’re getting paid to play the game don’t QQ so much over a few hours of downtime….that or get a counsellor.

Hi Paul,
Smam is inevitable whether you are on a do follow list or not, Askimet like mentioned by your visitors here should catch most spam but you still will need to moderate some spam that does get through. Why be upset you are on a do follow list?, you may actually pick up a loyal visitor to your site that you would otherwise not have received. I believe any publicity is good publicity.
But that is just my opinion. Have you contacted the blog owner about being taken off the list? You may have luck that way.

Spamming is an ongoing thing on the internet, if I was running a blog I don’t think I would ever have a do follow blog. I’m sure it brings more traffic to your site, but I can’t imagine what the spamming would be like. I bet it’s pretty unbelievable.

@<a href="#comment-132831">John Sullivan</a>: I haven't turned off "do follow" at all. All links going from the comments in this blog pass along the "Google Juice".

I think what you are noticing is that some plugins which remove the "no follow" strip it from everywhere in your site. I've been proactive with "no follow" on this site in order to give link love back to the folks who leave comments but also attempting to limit the flow of page rank off to places where it's not wanted.

I'll pop along and check out bloganese :)

I know what you mean, my blog is do-follow, and I get spamed a lot. Akismet filters well for me. For me it is worth the effort to delete the spam and keep the do-follow, this attracts more readers and some very good commenters who I reward for the comments. I am not sure if the notorious spammers will pay any attention to a comment policy or even care, spammers will always be there, like viruses and bacteria.

Hi Paul, first time here.I got a suggestion about this issue. I have around 8 blogs right now. 1 of them took away the nofollow setting. I compared the spam comments with all my blog. Here’s the result:My Dofollow & Nofollow blogs have the SAME AMOUNT of spammy comments. It doesn’t matter whether it is Bot, Human or Half Human and Bot, they are basically all over my blog as long as that blog have a high PR.You can add a comment policy in one short sentence. It might be something like “Comments such as thank you or short sentence that only have the intention to build links will be deleted immediately.” I think it helps when it comes to human. Put these right above the comment box.

Shawn, the morning bus driver sounds like someone who just wants to get their route done as quickly as possible and get home to daytime tv...

Maybe you'll get lucky and Dr.Phil or Oprah will convince them to be a nicer person.. or maybe they'll quit or get fired.....

Hove you talked to the bus company or whoever provides the bus about the situation?

I was going to mention how the school bus will come up to drop my son off in the afternoon when it’s raining, but won’t come get him during the morning, but Andy’s comment makes this seem so small. My son is 3 and has physical and speech delays. He goes to a preschool for therapy and to help him catch up. The morning bus driver makes my wife take him down to the busy road for pick-up, and on a normal day, that’s fine. When it’s raining, it’s impossible unless you want a soaked 3 year old, wife, and 1 year old (we’re not going to leave him alone at the house). A different driver in the afternoon will come to us and drop him off if it’s raining, but the morning driver won’t.

This reminds me of the situation my wife (Iza) went through, though in her situation what was required wasn’t available at any price. Her lecturer at Uni 2 weeks before an exam came up with a reading list of books with more than 20 titles.
Most of the titles were not in print any more. The Uni is classed as being part of a university in Poznan, though is located 100km in Kalisz (in Poland that is 2 hours drive).
There were no copies in the library in Kalisz of any of the books, because the day students had been given the list earlier.
The books were also couldn’t be reserved by phone in Poznan, the only way to check availability was to visit, which she did twice over 2 weeks.Other students in her class were trying in other cities such as Warsaw and Krakow, and they were all trying on the internet. In the end between her and the other 16 students in her class, they managed to assemble 5 of the books, and made 16 photocopies.Needless to say all but 2 people failed the exam, and even on the first retake only 50% passed.Even worse, the professor decided to play everything strict.4.5 4 5 3 4 5 = 25.5/6 = 4.25 = Average 4
4.5 4 5 2 3 4 5 = 27.5/7 = 3.92 – Average 3Professors have the option of having retakes replace previous grades, or for them to be included in the calculation as an addition. My wife would have received a grant for her whole 2 year Masters covering fees and travel, about 4000 eurosAh her Masters…The professor meant to be working with my wife and 5 others on their masters thesis has been out of touch for 3 months backwards and forwards to various hospitals.
She finally managed to get in touch, and it turns out he is now going to be retiring for health reasons … on 12 September.
Half the group haven’t even started writing a final version. My wife’s final draft is almost finished, the professor hasn’t even seen it once. She has to defend it before he retires, or she will have to start again with another professor.

All the servers are fairly slow and regularly crash or have unplanned resets, tickets for moderators take many hours to get heard with the responses automated and the server downtime due to technical problems is almost never refunded in free game time to the paying customers.ETA for blizz can mean 5 minutes or 18 hours.Useful is not a term i’d ever associate with blizzard

Could be worse – in Age of Conan collision detection is always on so if someone is standing in a doorway nobody else can enter the room. Our servers may be down but at least they’re playable when they’re up!Also Conan claims to auto fix its own bugs.It does this with built in Script Correction software, which adds 23 Gigabytes to the Application files.

They had the head of the department come out and give the song and dance about how they’d like to come up to us, but the fact that it’s a one way street and would have to turn around on private property, yada yada yada. The owner of the property says there’s no problem, but of course the bus people don’t see it that way…

Maybe you'll get lucky and Dr.Phil or Oprah will convince them to be a nicer person.. or maybe they'll quit or get fired.....

Have you checked your firewall setting? What OS are you using?

LOL..

Lion, I had a similar problem last night! My internet connection was down from 7.15 pm until round 6 am this morning. I phoned support at 8pm last night only to be told they wouldn't be open until 8am this morning, in the meantime I could email support or get it from the web!

Just lovely...

Yeah, “contact our Billing and account department”… Well, the Problem is, that they don’t have a phone number to call from Switzerland, and their Webform dosn’t function (some sort of “500 error”). So how should I contact them? Trough Telepahty?

All the servers are fairly slow and regularly crash or have unplanned resets, tickets for moderators take many hours to get heard with the responses automated and the server downtime due to technical problems is almost never refunded in free game time to the paying customers.ETA for blizz can mean 5 minutes or 18 hours.Useful is not a term i’d ever associate with blizzard
