hey djchuang.
I'm from Miami, Florida and planted a 2nd-gen hispanic church. I'd love to hear some of the issues that 2nd-gen Koreans deal with to see the similarities with 2nd-gen hispanics. I'm sure there are parallel issues.
thanks,

btw, I think the model that DJ mentions here is the best hope to reach 2nd generation Asian-Americans. It avoids 1) the cavalier rebelling against the 1st generation, acknowledging we need their help and 2) allow for truly missional ministries to the 2nd generation. The only weakness I see is the YOUTH (middle school-highschool-college?), who will be left in the 1st generation church with no older 2nd generation adults to help out. Has anybody seen this problem in these models? The only solutions I can think of is:
1) have the youth go to the 2nd-gen church plant from the get-go (which actually would be better anyways…it would be hard to be a missional youth ministry in the 1st gen church) or
2) have the 2nd gen church members commit to serving the youth at the 1st gen church while going to the 2nd gen church.any thoughts?Ben Pun, <a href="http://www.xanga.com/bpun" rel="nofollow">http://www.xanga.com/bpun</a>

Thanks to all of you for your comments. I don’t want this to sound like a resume, but a simple introduction. In the 1990’s, I was the English ministries pastor for 6 years at the South Calgary Chinese Evangelical Free Church (English, Mandarin and Cantonese congregations), and from 1999-2005 I pastored the English congregation at Christ UMC in Honolulu (a large Korean church). Now, I have the pleasure of pastoring Vision of Peace, which is the English ministry of the Korean UMC of Greater Washington (DC). The passion of our family is to inspire North American churches to be more effective in their cross-cultural outreach and this spring I’ll be graduating from Wesley Theological Seminary with a D.Min. in multi-ethnic ministry. It was many years ago that I was first introduced to D.J. through an online group of Chinese-American pastors, etc.Helen – I do wish to thank you for your writings over the years. I purchased the book: ‘Growing Healthy Asian American Churches” many months ago, but I am sorry to say that I have been so busy with my project paper and pastoring. You have given me another reason to finish it!Ken – I really appreciate your comments. Over the years, I have been creatively trying to come up with new “one” church models for the English-language congregations that I have served. My premise has been that there is a possibility that 1st generation and 2nd generation congregations may be able to achieve more by staying together, than by separating and becoming two churches with minimal inter-relationship.One of the challenges to a “one” church approach relates the question of structure. For example, from a denominational perspective, English-language congregations in “immigrant” churches in North America are almost invisible. Everyone knows the church as the “Korean” or “Chinese” church. Few non-Asian denominational officials seem to understand where such churches “find” their English ministry pastors, or comprehend how the local church is caring for them and the English congregations that they serve. I could say much about the scenarios for conflict that result, but you probably are just as aware of them as I am.I am intrigued by the idea of having our denomination formally recognize the English congregation of our church. One advantage might be, for example, that the English language congregation would have a more mature identity in terms of their relationship to the Korean language congregation. A problem that I have noticed in churches such as ours is that first generation Christians genuinely do not know how to regard the English congregation. Should it be seen as an another “department” of the church: e.g. Sunday School, Youth Ministry, English Ministry? Or, should the English congregation be given a special status that is different from all other departments of ministry? What role of supervision should the 1st generation senior pastor have in relation to the English pastor? To whom is the English congregation accountable? By formalizing the autonomy denominationally, it would seem to me that both our Korean and English members would have a more mature structure that better recognizes the uniqueness of our multi-congregations and would help us relate to one another laterally, rather than top-down.Another thought is that I really wish to move away from merely a “landlord-tenant” model. Thus, if our congregations are autonomous, our Korean and English language ministries should develop multiple areas of mutual ministry. I am especially interested in possibilities of evangelism, both here and around the world. If all we eventually do is “manage the facilities”, then it will be a sorry waste of the talents, gifts and resources that God has granted us.

I just have to say! I am a huge Starbucks fan and LOVE the Cinn Dolce Latte! I also got sad when they stopped selling it but HERE is the solution!
This is what I did and I am SO happy about it!
I bought an expresso/cappucchino/coffee machine and then bought the ingredients from Starbucks like the Vanilla Syrup and other stuff. They also have their own machine you can buy, plus ingredients.
Just as I am typing, I am drinking my Cinn Dolce Latte! and it tastes exactly if not better than the one I used to buy everyday at Starbucks!
Yes, it means forking out some money and time but if you really love their coffee, think of being able to drink it afterhours or any time you please right in the comfort of your own home!
I even bought the tall Starbucks mugs that look like if you are drinking it right frmo there!
And no, its not hard to make the drink! Very easy and tastes amazing!
Let me know if anyone tries it, I now am a happy Starbucks camper at home!

(It seems they may be the only three drinking it…oh well). On the thing called “green tea frappaccino”–it tasted like some random chemical with tons of sugar. Worst beverage experience yet (especially when I was thinking ‘green tea ice cream’ (a flavor delight!). Don’t miss that. As for that cinnamon thing–sounds like it has sugar… blech!
There’s a lot to like about what a MegaChurch can do.I was in the full-time ministry for 15 years as a… Crusade Coordinator for an Evangelist’s ministry, working with local churches… Pastor of a church plant in New England… Staff Minister with a 500+ member congregation. I’m now a member of a 14,000+ MegaChurch. What a MegaChurch can do: Run an excellent pre-K through 12 school with sports programs that truly compete with the public schools, and college-level high school courses; bus and street ministries that reach over 3,000 children per week; own a campground where underprivileged children can be sponsored for life-changing weeks during the summer; Build an outreach center in a crime-ridden section of the city that the police point to as a primary reason the local crime rate dropped two years straight; Fund missionaries and Bible Schools in over 150 nations; Fund telecasts and streaming video that is penetrating the Islamic nations with the Gospel; and more…What we miss about the smaller church: the sense of community – a core element of the biblical Christian culture. Even though the senior pastor knows us by name, we miss the ability to sit down to visit with him in casual conversation. Even as a member of one of the (over) 1,000 cell groups, one wouldn’t usually have the broad circle of personal relationships within the church that we had in the 500 member church. True community is missing.

I think what we need are something like mychurch.org with a xianz interface. The problem I see is that we need some cyber-community based on real life f2f for authentication, but then it should be able to federated to other cyber-community in proximity (of geographic, demographic, or denominationgraphic – God forbid!)However, we must also maintain a myspace presence because that’s where we interface with the world. The network of real life friends also keep other church kids accountable in cyberspace as well…

Thanks for the plug, DJ – although (as you know) we’ve got quite a few bugs we need to iron out! I’m almost embarassed to let the world see it now…We think social networking is most effective and useful if its focused on real preexistent communities with f2f interaction – like facebook for colleges and (hopefully) mychurch.org for churches. Web 2.0 is, after all, about community. Somehow myspace with users who have 1000 friends (very loose community) and ads all over the place managed to be tremendously successful… kudos to them. We’ll see if a non ad-based social network will survive – ironic I say this, given the above paragraph is a shameless ad

A couple of months ago I wrote a quick blurb about how to remove AlphaCleaner here:
<a href="http://weblog.cernos.com/articles/2006/03/04/a-sunday-with-alphacleaner" rel="nofollow">http://weblog.cernos.com/articles/2006/03/04/a-sunday-with-alphacleaner</a>I wish I had seen your article first. Also, I suggest Webroot as a spyware scanner. The scanning functionality is free and the best I’ve seen so far. Take with spyware scanners, if you’re not careful you may download a malicious tool. Double & triple check your spyware vendors before installing their software.<a href="http://www.webroot.com" rel="nofollow">http://www.webroot.com</a>

AlfaCleaner appeared on my computer last week and I am clueless as to how it got there. We run Windows XP and use McAfee antivirus. After trying the uninstall 3 times and having the computer shut down on me all 3 times, I finally started doing a system restore until I was able to get back behind AlfaCleaner’s appearance, however, I am still having email problems – Outlook Express keeps sending and resending my emails. Now that I am doing research on this AlfaCleaner, I am wondering if I need to do more, like use the hijackthis recommended on bleepingcomputer.com. Does anyone know if system restore is sufficient to remove AlfaCleaner? Is it really gone or do I have to do more? Help, please??

The AlfaCleaner malware was a tought nut to crack. There is detailed information on what it does with the windows registry at the Symantec site: <a href="http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/alfacleaner.html" rel="nofollow">http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/alfacleaner.html</a>My main problem, like experience by many others, is that it keeps rearing its ugly head even after supposedly it is removed by programs such as Ad-aware. This is I think due to the fact that it has infected c:\windows\system32\wininet.dll as well as having itself inserted into legacy_root registry.I followed the instructions at bleepingcomputer using both the smitRem and HijackThis programs.
<a href="http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic43477.html" rel="nofollow">http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic43477.html</a>I then ran another search with Ad-aware, quarantined the AlfaCleaner registry entries and rebooted. It looks like it is gone now and I certainly hope so. Good luck!

I ran into this exact problem, it started when I got the virus “bloodhound.w32.ep” from a website. Somehow in my attempt to fix that alfacleaner showed up. I looked everywhere and couldnt find any information on it, so I was thrilled to find this post. I followed Davinci’s directions to restore my destktop, and so far that’s worked. I manually deleted alfacleaner’s files. Haven’t had a problem but now I’m just praying I got them all. Unfortunately bloodhound is back (i intentionally retraced my steps to figure out where alfacleaner came from) but I’m about to take care of that one again.
I’m so annoyed, this ruined my two year run of no infections. boo.

You can stop alfacleaner from loading at startup by unchecking it in msconfig.
Then run spybot search&destroy and let it fix what it finds.Spybot does the same thing as hijackthis! but does it automatically..To get your background back do this..
Then download and run smitrem.. it is a very effective little tool and is easy to use,,,start/run type “control.exe” click on display.. click the desktop tab.. click ‘customize desktop’ … click the ‘web’ tab..whatever is in that web tab window.. checkmark it , hilite it, then delete it..click ‘ok’if your desktop background hasnt been restored to either default, or no background.. you should be able to now select a background using the slider in desktop settings .. click apply and the change should take effect..The above worked for me today…

Aflacleaner loaded its self on my system last Sunday. I was able to delete it by deleting all the new files added to my windows directory system32 directory including intell32.exe. I also uninstalled the alfacleaner program using the add/delet programs function in windows (don’t recall how successful I was at the time) and followed the directions you noted from Symantec. I did have an ole??? file that may have been used to overwrite my wininet.dll file. I’m not sure if I was successful. I followed the directions at My Anti Spyware site. All is not yet good. I am still having problems with explorer, the recycle bin does not show deleted files even after changing the properties, my security center is not accessable and my copy of McAfee does not run and I am having problems with downloading files from Microsoft Update.I have had some luck finding the problems using spybot and Bazooka Spyware Scaner, both free. I have been using them for a year or so. Bazooka has manual removal instructions for idnetified exploits.

I had a chocolate desert the other day. Not just any ordinary chocolate desert, but the warm moist kind, where the smell reaches your nose before the plate gets to the table. There is a firm outside that takes a bit for your spoon to get through, but closer to the center is more moist and juicy where you discover why it is served with a spoon – to allow one to scoop up the warm chocolatey goodness and feel it throughout one's mouth, then breath in through the nose to maximize the taste/smell pleasure. But anyways, I just gave glory to that chocolate desert because it satisfied me. This is the kind of thing that these two men do for Jesus, because he satisfies them. Perhaps they would disapprove of a conversation that argues which one of them is the most satisfying – since they are not satisfied by themselves or each other, but by Jesus. I love you!!Raymondp.s. thanks FC for the illustration

Firstly I acknowledge my own sinfullness and tendency to degrade and cause disunity in the body of faith for which I must come to my Father in humility to ask for His forgiveness. So by NO MEANS AT ALL do I see myself exempt from this. I am a sinner and if this where my gravest concern I would be amazingly blessed.I know I am from Australia but what are you all on.Have you ever heard of unity and being uplifting not degrading. What a waste of your time and everyone elses all you are doing is tearing down a brother of the faith. Both of them are amazingly gifted by the Holy Spirit to preach and a blog like this brings no Glory to God for you are insulting Him in degrading Piper or Keller.Instead of tearing one down encourage one and do not discourage another. Love does not speak a discouraging word. I am sure that Keller himself and Piper would be disappointed to see Christian brothers and sisters degrading another Pastor. No good is gained from this how saddening. How about we all look at 1 Corinthians 13Love is

- envy

- self-seeking
- keep records of wrongsWhere is the kindness? Where is the love? What is gained from this.

The Brazilians said Pele was the best – there are examples all over the world.I’m also not sure I see a problem with stating that someone or something is the best when we see it – if anything, we’re giving positive credit and saying encouraging words when we do it.Godly men like Keller and Piper certainly know that the little old lady that cleans the bathroom stalls at their churches will have a much bigger mansion in heaven than they will……its really just a matter of perspective I think.

As the proud owner of about 150 Keller cassetts, I classify as a “groupie”. I live in Atlanta and go to a large Willowcreek style seeker church that I and my family love very much, but I get my weekly/daily preaching input mainly from Keller – its a style preference thing.I’ve only heard Keller once live – about 11 years at a conference in NYC…..he spoke to a small group of us for about 20 minutes, and I knew right then that I had to get a hold of everything this guy has said – no matter the cost.It was interesting to read what John Lee wrote here about Redeemer snobbery – that doesn’t seem logically consistent with the preaching I’m hearing on tape…..I’d like to understand better what John means. One of the great things about Keller is that he transcends and doesn’t fit the mold of the modern reformed evangelical. I’ve been told by my PCA pastor friends that at PCA General Assemblys, TK sits in the back and is very unassuming – he’s viewed as a radical there – but I think in a good “missional” sense – they don’t know what to with a guy who is air-tight with his theology – but doesn’t see it as “the main thing” – yet blows the rest of them away with his ability to speak to the lost and mobilize a missional congregation.I was on staff with Campus Crusade for 12 years and have had the privilege of hearing live some of the greats – Tony Evans, John Hannah, Howard Hendricks, Sproul, Piper, Steve Brown……..Keller is the best, hands down.

I agree with you DJ.Though I thoroughly enjoy Piper and have been greatly influenced by his books (esp. Seeing and Savoring Christ, When I Don’t Desire God, Don’t Waste Your Life – I definitely prefer his more application oriented books), I prefer Keller. They are amazingly similar.
Piper preaches Christ. He preaches the value of savoring Christ and enjoying Him.
Keller preaches Christ. But Keller is Piper applied. Piper seems hard to relate to. Good ideas in theory – I want to savor Christ as Piper does. But Keller teaches me how to believe the gospel and apply it to my life.

There’s a sermon I listened to earlier today that spoke to me greatly in this subject. Thanks DJ! One thing from the sermon struck me a lot was the need of affirmation. It’s not just things like “oh, you have done a good job!” It’s genuine thanksgiving and the appreciation of the worker being part of this greater purpose. Another thing that I learned was the “people” aspect of work. We are here working not for the sake of working, but for the sake of relationships and the corporate pursue of a higher purpose – the value of individuals not as disposable and replaceable assets, but as valuable human beings that are wonderfully created by God. And neither of these two attributes exists in my current jobs.

&gt;Lee: No, that wasn’t at all what I meant. Many apologies if that’s how it came out. I (or Piper) am not trying to point fingers or find justice or determine who should take more responsibility for the current state of affairs in certain countries. It’s not even about turning the other cheek so much, because this is not supposed to be personal.
I am not trying to “justify” sending Asians/non-whites at all…..I don’t need to….that should be plain to all Christians…that all believers whatever their race have a responsibility to fufill the Great Commision. We, believers of all colors and nationalities are in this together. We are all called to be part of the work, but we need to objectively access the situation for each people God wants us to reach and figure out who/what would be the more ideal tool to carry out a particular job. Sometimes it might be a blond blue eyed male dentist from Kentucky or it might be a black woman school teacher from Belize. It is a strategic call. Finding the right person for the job. Not discrimination.BTW NONE of what I’ve expressed above are my original premises, nor are they necessarily John Piper’s as Mr. Chuang mentioned earlier that he has heard Asian colleagues in ministry voice similar observations about the potential of Asians in the mission field. If you want to share your church’s view on missions, the Great Commission, ideas on how to reach countries that are openly hostile to a particular race or nationality, please email me at visualpun(a t) netzero. net. … since this is turning into a one on one discussion rather than direct comments about the blog entry. If not, take care and God bless.

I’m a 24 year old Vietnamese American from Florida. I have worked in ministry for the past 6 years, leading my church, statewide, and helping out with national Vietnamese youth camps and conferences. The ministry I’m beginning here in the the greater Tampa Bay area is called Asian American Intercultural Ministry (AAIM) beginning in mid-January. This ministry will start by reaching out the primarily unchurched English-speaking college and young professional who are not growing spiritually in their 1st Generation ethnic church or have stopped attending altogether.Funny that DJ mentions this issue because for quite some time now, I have approached countless Asian-ethnic 1st Generation churches in the area with the hopes to perhaps start an English-speaking ministry/para-church/church underneath their church. The main ideal I was look for was the fact that they needed to share the same vision to build the next generation church and have a heart for the 2nd Generation. I have been unsuccessful thus far. Every pastor have had a tremendous response and show great support, however, no one has shared that vision. I have talked to or will begin speaking with 5 Vietnamese churches, 4 Chinese churches, 1 Hmong church, 1 Asian church, and a Korean church in the area.As of right now, I would follow under the cavalier rebellion against the 1st generation.(BTW, I have attended Emmanuel in Philadelphia and they are doing great things up there! There is another Korean college ministry up there too just as large; last time I check, around 300+ college attendees weekly.)

Thanks, DJ. I like the concept of “both/and.” I believe that we need to launch more English-only AA churches, but that immigrant churches still need a healthy EM. I just wanted to make sure no one thought that my remarks above implied that I don’t think we need AA churches. We do!

Ben,My first reason for saying that any immigrant church needs an EM is that if people are still coming into this country and having children, then there will need to be a ministry for them. I think that this is the main reason that they still need an EM. I’m not sure that many people would accept the idea of sending their children to a different church to be ministered to there. Except… maybe.. if the daughter AA church and the original church maintain a very close relationship. But I don’t know if I am being too idealistic to think that that would even be possible. The second reason has to do with the general calling of all Christians to share the Gospel. If there is an EM to which people in the immigrant church can invite their non-Chinese speaking friends it opens an opportunity for evangelism. This has happened in my church on a fairly regular basis. By the way, an increasing number of the youth in our youth fellowship are from non-Christian families, and a significant number of them are non-Chinese.I have heard of a number of Korean churches that have deliberately sent off their EM to become an independent English-only church, and then immediately started building a new EM. I’m hoping that someone from one of those churches will comment here.
