Considering the fact that I have hundreds of Capri Sun pouches from my local school sitting in my dining room waiting to be sent to Terracycle, this is pretty funny.
I gave it a mention on Mother Nature Network today:

Actually, the law does vary by where you live. The utility may be required to approve of certain installations and buy back your power. I’m glad that it’s easy in Portland.
And folks are doing the work of convincing utility regulators to make it more common that folks can feed power into the grid.

all you do is set up a solar panel or windmill, connect to the invertor and plg the invertor into the wall.

That sounds like a great app. I work at The Conservation Fund <a href="http://www.conservationfund.org" rel="nofollow">(www.conservationfund.org)</a> and we’re involved in a program to plant a real tree for every virtual tree planted through the iPhorest app. It’s a really cool app, pretty interactive – you plant the seed by virtually shoveling, shake the phone to make it rain, the sun shines and tree grows in stages each day. You can also see a map of the world that shows where people have planted from while the “real” trees are planted along the Gulf Coast in the U.S.
It’s not too often that technology can be used for environmental good and it’s nice to share the opportunities to make a positive impact when you can!

We appreciate the attention given to SRI in this blog report, but we would like to correct immediately the crediting of SRI to being ‘invented’ by Cornell University researchers.
SRI methods were assembled/synthesized by Fr. Henri de Laulanie in the 1980s after about two decades of observation, experimentation and work with farmers in Madagascar. I learned about SRI in 1993 from the NGO Association Tefy Saina while I was director of the Cornell International Institute for Food, Agriculture and Development (CIIFAD), which Fr. de Laulaunie and a number of his Malagasy friends and associates set up in 1990.
CIIFAD began working with Tefy Saina leaders and staff in 1994 to introduce SRI methods to farmers cultivating in the peripheral zone around Ranomafana National Park under a USAID-funded project, but we did not believe/accept the methods for three years, needing to see whether something that sounded ‘too good to be true’ was indeed valid. After the farmers who used these methods averaged 8 tons/hectare for three years, on soils where previously they averaged 2 tons, CIIFAD began trying to get the methods evaluated in other countries. It took two years to get such trials going, in China and Indonesia, but after these evaluations confirmed the merits of SRI practices, CIIFAD began trying to spread knowledge of the new methodology, in cooperation with Association Tefy Saina.
The SRI website that CIIFAD maintains for the worldwide network of SRI colleagues (<a href="http://ciifad.cornell.edu/sri/" rel="nofollow">http://ciifad.cornell.edu/sri/</a>) is in association with Tefy Saina. Cornell faculty want credit to be given where it belongs, in this case with some remarkable persons in Madagascar.
Sadly, Fr. de Laulanie passed away in 1995 after devoting 34 years of his life (almost half of his lifetime) to improving the situation and prospects of rural people in his adopted country, Madagascar. His Tefy Saina colleagues in that country continue to bring his innovation to others and to work with CIIFAD and others in making SRI available around the world.
The past president and secretary of Tefy Saina in 2006 were brought to Rwanda by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) to train farmers in that country under an IFAD project. In 2008, over 2,000 farmers were practicing SRI and their yields averaged 6-7 tons/hectare where before they got only 4 tons.
The validity of SRI practices has now been seen in 36 countries, Ghana being the most recent to join ‘the SRI club.’ Countries as diverse as Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan and Bhutan are making good use of the methods as can be seen from the SRI website (address given above).

It’s still possible for uservoice to get gamed by griefers who want to get their comments in. One tactic is to use a bunch of accounts to create a flood of new suggestions, all suitably unpleasant, which will fill up the RSS feed and distract from people who are actually trying to use the system.
I’m seeing that on <a href="http://feedback.annarbor.com" rel="nofollow">http://feedback.annarbor.com</a> right now (oh, it might be cleaned up by the time you see this) and it’s a pain.

You say
“Yes, a handful of other companies are fully solar powered, but it’s Solar Host’s whole approach that differentiates it from all the rest.”
and you link “other companies” to AISO.net.
AISO is actually Solar Host’s data centre, as it is for Ecological Hosting, another UK hosting company that’s also genuinely 100% solar-powered.
This is not to detract from Solar Host’s approach in any way, or the competitiveness of their packages, but AISO’s facility is truly remarkable for not just being solar-powered but designed throughout to make optimum use of renewable resources. Their water supply is from rainwater harvesting, their daytime lighting is provided by solar tubes, their air conditioning uses no refrigerants, they use AMD rather than Intel processors in their servers to cut power consumption by 60% as well as virtualization … and the list goes on.
What Phil Nail has achieved at AISO should be emulated in data centres the world over. It’s shocking that this is the only commercially available data centre of its kind in the world right now.

Seriously , it would good idea to make the offer adaptable, you pay and consume for what you need.

The more awareness the better, thank you for the article! I was the first event planner opening a company for green weddings in 2005 (my ancient website greenweddings.net is still up) and we had quite an amazing ride. After many green and greenish weddings we not only have a good feeling for budgets and what is realistic (organic food sadly is often too expensive) but also have gotten more creative and innovative with each beautiful event. We have done $200,000 to $5,000 events; whatever budget couples have it always comes down to spending money wisely. We found that re-use is one of the most important issues especially for weddings as every waste is harmful, even if is an eco-friendly product. Every new production needs energy and if we waste 200 wedding invitations, escort cards and programs, printed on recycled paper, its still wasted energy as they land in the garbage can. Online invites and websites are fun and if you have a green web provider you’re a near perfect no-waste-bride. So if we buy new stuff, it’s great to think: where will this land afterwards or how can I possibly re-use this?
Creatively introducing decor we already own, shopping for eclectic designs at Thrift or vintage stores is a great way to save money and the environment. Also buying glass ware and linens and sharing it afterwards with the bridal party is fun, eco-conscious and often cheaper than renting it.

Thank you, a really optimistic and inspiring article. I was particularly impressed that you cited the importance of considering the source of favours and travel issues. I think such radical/holistic evaluation of views/behaviour is vital. Replacing conventional unnecessaries with ‘green’ versions misses the point. The good news is cutting back on excess, means savings. Doing/making something yourself creates meaning…and it’s fun!For a revolutionarily simple take on sustainable floristry have a look here:

Good article. It is important to educate people in the green market. It is all so new and anything they do is commended! I have been green for 18 years and consider this new market so exciting. It is about awareness and education. If someone does one small thing or they go full on green, both positively impact the environment. I think the more articles and comments of ways to do it are so helpful. People don’t have to be concerned with giving things up, it is more about thinking a different way. All will come around! Green brides are creative and fun! I have the pleasure of doing many of these weddings because I grow organic flowers. We are all growing together in awareness. Thanks!

Paul-thank you for sharing our vision for Dream Green Weddings! It’s important for couples to know that planning a green wedding is not an “all or nothing” deal. They can make a few eco-friendly choices and still make a difference. We’re excited to bring earth friendly wedding options to the mainstream. In my opinion, that’s how we will truly make a measurable difference with sustainable event planning.
