Patti,Thanks for the tip! This makes total sense. I see now that if I give myself unended time, it takes me much longer time to write a post, bc I find other things to do while I’m writing the post. I esp. love Twitter. Not that it’s not important to network, it’s just not what I need to be doing at the same time as writing! Thanks for an excellent post! krissy knox

I just found this blog today while looking through some twitter lists ~ this is a great topic. People think I’m crazy (including my husband) that I keep a timer on my desk. But it totally helps!! I have 3 hours a day of peace and quiet (while the little one is at school) so I have to make the most out of it. A timer seriously helps me do this. I mean the whole point of being a blogger is to have free time to spend with my kid, right? So anything that helps me get that done is a good thing in my book!

I agree with both Patti and Sharon; setting and following time schedules works, especially when there’s some writing to be done. I find when I don’t give myself a time limit, a project that takes an hour lasts three times longer because I end up doing a lot of things not related to the work. The extra free time will be highly appreciated…

Wow...couldn't have said it better...work does indeed fill the time available. I have found that I get a lot more done when I actually schedule in time to write, comment, blog, and do the things I want to get done. For me, scheduling is the only way to go--I have to keep my business running plus keep my family happy and the magic potion is all in the scheduling!

cheers!

Great blog! People love to try before they buy. That is why when buying a new car, we look it over, inside and out, take it for a test drive, ask our family what they think, then hand over the big bucks. Same goes for buying a house, a new computer, a new couch, and a new book! Will this benefit me? Will I still like it after I buy it? And ultimately, what's in it for me?

And then you have the blogging superstars that we aspire to blog with and for them, and we wonder why they don’t answer our emails or respond to our clever commentary on their sites. I was kind a hesitant to jump in to some discussions I find interesting. However, as the day goes by, I acquired more knowledge making more confident to share my own ideas. At the end of the day, I conquered my hesitations and had joined some discussions. I’m enjoying it so far.

Great post Larry!I’ve been blogging since it’s inception–from a personal journal to the monstrosity it’s grown to now. I don’t have a huge site or following, probably because that was never my intention. If I have a few people that like what I have to say–I’m a happy camper, er. . .blogger. I’d rather people (readers) see me as a real person than some guru in the south of France–and how do we really know they’re tweeting from some beach in France? Maybe they’re sitting at their kitchen table/office just like I am. LOLIf you find out what a “bitly” is, let me know. I don’t have the first clue and I’m not so sure I even like it. Thanks for sharing!

My blog perhaps is a little bit more business and personal development focused that the average and hence more interesting to the typical Linked In user.

For me personally, I tend to watch what is shared on Facebook more closely--these are the people I have more personal connections with and have an added value to because I know them. My Twitter is filled with hundreds and hundreds of tweets everyday and I can never keep up with it. So if one of the bloggers I follow on both Twitter and Facebook post to Facebook, I am much likely to notice it and read it.

For my blog, I get traffic from both but get more time spent on my blog from people from my Facebook.

My 2 cents worth!

I’ve found that I’m much more motivated to write when I’m certain that the material will be useful to others. Furthermore, I like to know that there will be others besides me reading my work. Obviously, this is a hard factor to predict, but it’s been one of my greatest deterrents over the years.Beyond that, I must be truly inspired by an idea to generate quality content. While I’ve posted articles that were merely informative, I prefer the opinion pieces that engage my thoughts and those of the reader. These require much more dedication and passion for talking points than their informative counterparts, thus making them much more rare.

I also find the best way to ward off the infamous Writers Funk is to write only about stuff I'm excited about--if I'm excited about it, I want to write. If I get into a ho-hum, this is a daily chore type of mode, I know I need to change up what I'm writing about or discover the real reason behind my funk.
